If you have a spare MicroSD card lying around, it’s totally worth flashing it with SteamOS. Takes a couple of minutes compared to USB where some people claim it took them an hour or more.
@@c2a10mYou can absolutely use it as storage AFTER you use it to reimage your steam deck. When you create the backup image on the SD card, it will delete the whole card. After you successfully reimage your steam deck, just erase the micro SD card and use it for storage like you would normally.

Some information that might help you if you're using Balina Etcher is that you need to unzip the file before trying to flash your recovery media (usb stick or whatever).
In just put in my new 1TB Sabrent Rocket! It took me about 20 mins all in and I have terrible eyesight, but it was really easy! :D Got the software loaded in no time and back at it! Wonderful!
Install went pretty quickly once I switched over to Rufus. Etcher was crap and refused to image, plus it was barely done in 15 minutes. Rufus finished in 3 minutes. Thanks for the guide.

Something about 100mbs is best as this is how fast data can go through type c port on deck. Also there are a couple more vids with more detail on what you do with rufus when using that. My 10p worth. I can’t access my usb drive in the boot menu. It doesn’t even show the ssd I installed. I probably did something wrong during the installation but I can’t figure out what that is.
Ok so sadly this video does not show you any of the issues that I have had doing this upgrade. First issue came when trying to use a flash drive to install the O.S. It would get to about 66% then pop an error that the device was already in use. both myself & a computer guy of mine tried everything to get my Acer laptop to do this but nothing we found solved the problem. We tried everything from turning off my computers security to reformatting the brand new Sandisk flash drive. My friend from another state had to flash their own flash drive using their high end PC & send it to me in the mail. One issues solved but what a headache! The next issue that I had came when I flashed the new Sabrent Rocket. Everything seemed to go smoothly till after it was finished & the Steamdeck restarted, it immediately tried to update & failed. I kept trying over & over & it failed. One time it got in an update loop so I let it try overnight but it was just an update loop leaving me no options whatsoever. I tried hard resetting it but that wouldn't work. Finally out of nowhere it decided to update. All in all I spent all night & half a day trying before it finally updated. Once the Steamdeck was finished updating & seemed to work properly I inserted my Micro SD with all of my games on it but it would not recognize the micro SD. I tried to reformat it several times but the micro SD is bricked. I even tried to reformat it with my Nintendo Switch but that wouldn't work. I do love the new Rocket now that it is complete but it was a major headache over & over & it cost me a 1TB Sandisk micro SD. This video does not tell you anything on how to use Rufus correctly so keep that in mind if you are new to it. This video does not tell you anything about the problematic update that can happen once installed nor how to fix it. This video also does not tell you the danger of bricking your micro SD. It is incomplete at best & is meant to make it look smooth as a baby. It's not smooth at all if you have any of these issues. I doubt that everyone will have these issues but you should know the possibilities with information on how to resolve them wherever possible.
After going through the setup I am at the "installing updates" step, but it continuously completes and restarts the installing bar. Is that normal? As a side not, my buttons were working after installing, but after reimaging it they don't work.
no one ever shows what happens before you get to the steam desktop with the 4 icons. I'm going through hell trying to install steam os on my rocket.. I tried this a thousand times in different ways and I never get to that screen...
I have everything done like on video. But mine steam deck was on the screen with steam deck logo for about 3 hours. And now looks like desktop mode poped out but its black screen just with mouse pointer. Trackpad does not work Anyone had that issue as well?
@@yuryguzman5936 nope. I gave up after 2 days. I bought m2 ssd sabrent enclosure and I will just clone old ssd to new one using steam deck. Enclosure plugs into USB c in steam deck. I couldn't boot SD using usb
solved this by using flashing to an sd card and inserting it in the steam deck instead but now im stuck because the steam deck failed to update once it was re-imaged
Im very late to this but I need someone’s help. Just recently bought the sabrent 1tb ssd so I could switch it with my 64gb ssd steam deck. I didn’t know I needed to reimage the steamos when I switched the ssds. Just two hours ago I bought a rocket nano waiting for it to deliver so I can instal the steamos onto it. My steam deck is currently on the battery saver mode so I have to configure the usb so that I can recognize it when I try to reinstall the steamos? I hope this makes sense but I just finished watching the video on the rocket nano and finished video and now I’m nervous I screwed myself over since I didn’t watch enough videos on this to know exactly what to expect when I switched the ssds
Have you connected it to a power source first? When you put the battery in saver mode, you must connect a power supply to the usb c port in order to exit the saver mode

I installed a different 1tb ssd and my steam deck had smoke come out of it and replaced it. I held down the power button after removing power and was told i should have pressed it a few times. Any suggestion or maybe because that ssd ran too much power... don't want a repeat issue... ty
it wasn't super easy to do. there was a lot of questions and troubleshooting involved for us. it wasn't as straight forward as a lot of these youtube videos make it out to be. a more helpful video would be showing the actual settings needed when using Rufus.
What really annoyed me about swapping out the SSD and reinstalling the imagery software is that I had to watch 4 separate videos due to this channel making 2 separate videos for complete process of it all and not enough details of the process another channel basically didn't know what they were talking about with the thumb drive and the last channel to finish getting the complete process of the imagery in full details with the knowledge of the thumb drive imagery process.

Frankly I think these drives are purely CGI and do not actually exist and the only way I'll believe it is for them to send me one to test for myself.

if i flash it with SteamOS, can i still use it as a storage unit as well? Debating if i should get a high storage micro SD on top of the ssd upgrade

I recency changed my ssd and its been slow since =( idk whats going on it ran better with the standard 64
On the steam deck after I click on my flash drive to boot it gets stuck at the logo, I’ve been waiting for 45 min the most.
The ssd shows up in bios but when i try to reimage is says no nvme detected...1TB SABRENT brand new.

If you do not have a USB C Flash drive you can use an SD Card.

Yes, you can boot the deck from a micro SD card.
Save yourself the heartbreak and headaches and get a FAST USB. No off brands. Mine would not load. Let it sit all night to a dark screen.

Load up Rufus in the default settings. In most cases it's the right setting.
1TB still feels low for today's standards.. so I went with 2TB instead. Thank you Sabrent!
