That's the acceleration due to gravity. Using sign convention and taking upwards as positive, that means that acceleration due to gravity (always taken as downwards) must be -9.8ms-2.
@Mariyam Jahangir Hey! 9.8 ms is the value of Earth's gravity. As the objects motion was upwards, the gravity was opposing it. So was used with negative sign .
@Mariyam Jahangir when you drop an object on Earth, it accelerates towards the ground at 9.8ms⁻² (ignoring the effects of air resistance). As for the negative sign, that's called 'sign convention' - deciding which direction is positive and which is negative. I take upwards to be the positive direction. Since objects accelerate downwards (the negative direction), acceleration due to gravity is taken as -9.8ms⁻²
Why would people dislike the truth about the Equations of motion everything is perfect *its slow pace to not fall behind *simple and going through each step *perfect illustration i can't see why people disliked this?
Perfect! Exactly what i was looking for. Most other videos just show how to memorize the equations, this goes under the hood. The equations make perfect sense now.
It's really a good lecture . I was able to understand very efficiently without subtitles . Would you please solve more examples in your video . That would be really helpful . Love form India !!
Thank you so much! I couldn't figure out how to get the 3rd equation, but after this explanation the 3rd and 4th seem quite obvious. Of course it's harder if you don't know how you're supposed to get there.
Dear Mr Smith, I humbly request you to make a video regarding graphs of uniform acceleration etc. I have a lot of trouble reading them and obtaining data from them. This is just a suggestion.
There is a video called 'Velocity-time graphs' - is that any use to you? If you tell me what areas the video would need to cover, it's something which I'm sure I could do at some time because it wouldn't take too much work.
Thank-you very much. My brain was very confused because of this kinematic equations of Sir Isaac Newton and was about to destroyed because no one was able to explain this concepts in simple way. You explained them very well and help me overcome my physics problems. Thank-you very much buddy!!👍
thank you sir !!!!!that was useful, now iam grateful that i found a teacher like you , i hope your students understand that they HAVE YOU !!!!!many thanks
Thanks this halped me alot i have ny paper tomorrow and i was having a lot of trouble understanding this but after watching this video but now its all cleared thankyou mr smith
But you are more awesome than me.I am just a student whereas you are a teacher. Not just a normal teacher but an super awesome teacher.Btw you are welcome.
Wow, thanks a ton. In the exercise only u was given and the rest you had to find out by reading the text carefully and making one assumption (taking upwards as positive). Hadn't known how to do this before watching the vid. Super content!!!
Sir you are the best physics teacher in my life..............simply you can explain fluently .....please doing more video .............we can understand more........sir I am the student of honours 3rd year department of mathematics.......sir you will be able taw solve mechanics 3rd year major courses..............
physics is the most dreadful of subjects especially when: you have an awful, abusive teacher, you're bad with numbers, there's a pandemic outside and the school tells you there's no exams, then 3 weeks before the exams they proceed to tell you about the exams. I'm likely failing anyway and going to the foreign legion but thanks anyway, your single video taught me better than all of my class time.
Good luck with the revision - there are 24 past paper question videos that go over the majority of the course. Get watching them and keep working through the past papers, checking your answers as you go. I'm happy to answer any questions you have too. Good luck!
For these questions, you have to decide which direction is positive (called sign convention). I decided to take upwards as positive which means that an acceleration downwards is negative.
That's because (ignoring air resistance), the path of the projectile is perfectly symmetrical. The vertical velocity at any height on the way down will be equal to that on the way up.
how did you get -9.8 for the acceleration?
please help, thanks

Why didn't you took acceleration positive as it accelerated when moving downward?
For these questions, you have to decide which direction is positive (called sign convention). I decided to take upwards as positive which means that an acceleration downwards is negative.

how do u consider initial and final velocity of the ball be the same? ( although der is difference in sign due difference in direction)
That's because (ignoring air resistance), the path of the projectile is perfectly symmetrical. The vertical velocity at any height on the way down will be equal to that on the way up.
