I was so jealous of my older brother when he got one of these for Christmas back in the early 80's. He very rarely would ever let me play with it either. He ended up selling it to our older brother years later and I was pretty sure he had then sold it online. But then last Christmas I received a giant present from my brother and to my surprise inside was the Imperial shuttle. It was all taken apart but it was all there and still in very good shape. I think he maybe took it apart to fix the wings at one point and didn't wanna bother putting it back together so he gave it to me. It now resides in a place of respect in my house. Easily one of the best toys of the 80's.

i wish i hadn't outgrown these toys by the time ROTJ rolled around, i would have loved to have this despite me not into the larger toys like the falcon and at-at. nice to hear you finally got your ship. funny what these brittle hunks of rickety plastic means to us.

The Imperial Shuttle is by far one of my most favourite Ships alongside Slave 1, Kenner did such an amazing job on this one as it even still holds up today, I wish they re-released this so younger generations will be able to play with this absolutely stunning piece of artwork like we all once did from the Early 80s- Early 2000s

Hi Dave - thanks for the videos, much enjoyed. For paint and varnish removal (like your Bespin guard) brake fluid is very harsh, and can weaken old plastics. For restoring old Tamiya Sand Scorcher RC car body shells (hard plastic) I have found 'Graffiti Go' from Toolstation to be excellent at removing old paints of unknown origin - less harsh than caustic soda-type paint removers, water soluble and enviro friendly. Worth a try - pour some out rather than spray, and work it into the model with a kids paint brush, then rinse the dissolved paint in warm water before it dries again. Hope that is of use to you, and keep up the good work! Best wishes, Richard.

When I need to fix warped plastic I usually bring some water to a boil then hold the item (using tongs!) in the steam. I find it softens the plastic enough to re-shape it. I've never tried anything as large as this shuttle wing, so I don't know how well it will work here (and I don't have one these, sadly!) but it might be worth a try if nothing else is working. Just don't burn yourself!
Well done to get it this far! Great video.

Dear Dave, I know that this video was from 7 years ago but to help you maybe to remove that old spary varnish other shuttle try either using a slurry of baking soda and a soft sponge and or using non acetone nail polish remover this can be good for light cleaning on plastic PVC based toys. I hope you see this and like the idea. Thank you.😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 great restoration video by the way ,keep 'em comming.

Love watching your techniques for fixing and cleaning. About to start on A vintage Snowspeeder. I was thinking about the battery compartment, I wonder if the previous owner was trying to customise it so the engines lit up, and had painted it to stop light leaks?
Not lucky enough to have an original but did get the Saga collection version, which was basically the same model, though doesn't contain the electronics, so will be interesting to see what they were. I'm guessing engine/ blaster sounds etc similar to other Kenner/Palitoy releases.

I seem to recall the larger-flatter top surfaces of my brother's F-14 were extremely glossy- but he also stored his painting supplies in the same cabinet. I'm wondering if it wasn't some sort of mould release Kenner used on larger parts, or if the plastics got solvent-fume polished (since part of the example you are showing was painted)

  • @boojwahz

i may have tried straight on boiling water, or just letting the wing sit in room temperature water for a day or two to replace the moisture lost over time. i think a problem is that it's not being evenly heated enough to release the tension. obviously these things never went through a plastic annealing process else you wouldn't get the cracking and crazing, but it is what it is, lol. too bad these are too rare to experiment with, then i would have tried a hair dryer, heat gun or even an oven.

  • @TheCasualFanatic

The varnish looked like a failed retrobright treatment... It happens when there isn't an equal amount of UV hitting the surface area of the plastic... That happens with globs of retrobright is unevenly distributed on the surface.
