    NO FEAR SOCK KNITTING CLASS ONLINE
    Class 10: Shadow Wrap Short Row Heel in Contrasting Color
    In Today's class we will be learning how to knit the shadow wrap short row heel in a contrasting color and how to weave in ends as you knit. This heel is knit with a series of twin and triple stitches to "build" each side of the short row heel. It is very easy to follow, there is very little counting and and it creates a perfectly symmetrical heel that has a deep and comfortable fit.

    I’ve done many shadow wrap heels and I love them - this was my first contrast shadow wrap heel and I gave a little squeal when I tightened the ends after the heel was done and there are NO HOLES. This is so wonderful! Thank you so much Denise!

    I have only just begun to knit & I really want to learn to make socks. Watching this was like watching a magic trick. I had no idea how it was done until now. You made it look so easy that I think I might be able to do this. Thank you for such clear instructions.

      I knitted my first pair of socks using Denise ‘s shadow wrap heel pattern and they turned out really well. I watched a lot of the No Fear Sock Knitting Class videos before embarking on the journey and they were really helpful. Good luck!

    Thank you for all of the time and effort that you put into your videos. By far, you have the clearest and most detailed tutorials for the heels. I find myself repeating your mantra, “take your time, don’t rush, this isn’t a race”, anytime I get to a difficult spot in any of my knitting. Thank you again, you are wonderful and much appreciated ❤️

    Thanks so much for these great tutorials ! I now use the shadow wrap heel whenever I do a contrast heel. I usually knit toe up and it works great. My last few have not been with self striping yarn…. Just speckled. If you aren’t worried about stripes you don’t actually have to cut the MC. Just start back with the main colour on the row where you resolve the last triple stitch on the left… and continue through to the instep. Two less ends to weave in! Looking forward to what you figure out for the ‘blip’ on the left. Thanks again !

      @EarthtonesgirlPodcast  3 года назад

      Hello my friend,
      I'm so glad you enjoyed the tutorial. But I hate to tell you, you will NOT get the bullseye heel using this method. You knit the shadow wrap heel "back and forth" in short rows not in the round like an afterthought heel. So it will stripe but not the bullseye.

    Thanks so much for your tutorial - this is by far the nicest method I've found for turning a heel! I often get a lot of stress between the working heel stitches and the remaining across the instep, and read that holding a few instep stitches on either side of the working heel can really help reduce any enlarged stitches. Have you ever tried this while doing a shadow wrap heel?

    Thank you so much for taking the time and providing such in-depth knowledge about socks! People must be tired of me referring them to your podcast series. I had started to do a shadow wrap short row heel on the two socks I’d knitted to that point and started…then stopped. Took it out and went back to assure that I really understood what I saw and heard. It would have been too easy to keep going and not been happy. I actually laughed to myself wondering how many times it took you to present it to your audience. It was so easy to take out the knitting and do the work. And then, because of the way my brain is wired, would the exact same thing be done on a ‘tube cranked sock’, when putting in the afterthought heel? I’m sorry If I sent you into another rabbit hole….if you haven’t already been there. I’m just secretly waiting for you to explore mittens in the same way to have covered socks! 🧐 A sincere Thank You! For being you! 💗

      Hi Ann,
      You're very welcome.
      If you're asking if the shadow wrap heel can be used as an afterthought heel. I believe it can, though i have not knit it myself. Keep in mind that you will not get the bullseye effect if you are using self striping yarn.
      Happy Sock Knitting,
      Denise

    Thank you for your in depth instructions. I’m knitting “shorty” socks with a contrasting little cuff. The heel starts directly after the cuff.
    For the main yarn I’m using a striped yarn. Would you suggest using a solid contrasting yarn for the Shadow Wrapped Heel and then using my striped yarn for the foot? I’m thinking that the stripes would look a little weird in the heel?

    • @EarthtonesgirlPodcast
      @EarthtonesgirlPodcast  7 дней назад +1

      Apologies for my delayed reply!! YES!! I would definitely suggest using a solid color for the heel. The striping yarn will be a bit "off" if you continue on with it for the heel.

    Thank you! I am on my third pair (one with contrast heel) with the shadow wrap heel and really like the construction and the fit. I do find that my stitches get sloppy on the purl side (stitches seem too tight and it is hard to find the leg) and don't know if this will improve with practice or if there is some technique for dealing with purl stitches (or maybe the issue is with the knit stitches on the other side). Am looking forward to seeing more about using this for toe construction.

    Until now my sock knitting efforts have been mediocre. I think this heel and your No Fear course will change that. Question, does this only work on top down socks or can you do the twins on the underside on the way up and the triplets on top toward the ankle on a toe up sock?

      Hi Rita,
      Congratulations on getting your first socks! I am so happy my videos were helpful to you. Unfortunately I do not have a toe up tutorial. You can still follow the basic instructions and apply them to a toe up pattern.
      I have attached a link to a basic toe up sock pattern that’s available on Ravelry.

    Hi Denise: love this tutorial so much! Can’t wait to try this heel. When doing the contrast heel could I just change to contrast color and weave ends in later? Any tips on that? Thanks!

      Hi Marty,
      Yes you can weave in the ends later. Knitter's choice. This video does show you how to weave in as you go but again when you do that is up to you.

      Thank you very much Adéla.
      To answer your question, No I do not do any additional weaving in of the ends. I just weave in as I knit then cut off the tails, leaving about 1/4 inch.

    I love the look of this method so much! Thank you for the tutorial! Do you have any suggestions for altering the heel flap for a narrow heel? My ankle is a little thick, but my heel is narrow. Would I knit some together in the middle of the heel as I'm decreasing? Start the heel sooner and continue with decreases further than leaving ten in the middle? Something else? Thank you for any thoughts you may have! I'm a newbie to sock knitting! ❤️

    • @EarthtonesgirlPodcast
      @EarthtonesgirlPodcast  2 года назад +1

      Hi Yuri,
      This shadow wrap heel does not have a heel flap. But if you want to make a heel flap more narrow you would decrease by multiples of 2 before you start. You can decrease in the center or the outer edges. How many decreases exactly I can not say it depends on the width of your heel. I would start with 2 stitches and move down from there until you find the number that fits you the best.
      Hope that helps!!

    I’ve been trying to mimic your technique for weaving in the ends and just can’t make it work. I’m a continental knitter. Is that the problem? Other than that, this shadow wrap heel video was amazing. Using it all the time! Thank you!

      Hi Donna,
      It is possible that being a continental knitting can be the issue. HeyBrownBerry has a youtube tutorial on weaving in ends that may work better for you. It is available on your channel.

    Denise, if you did the last round of leg before the heel in the contrast color, wouldn’t that resolve the “blip”?

    • @EarthtonesgirlPodcast
      @EarthtonesgirlPodcast  3 года назад

      Hi Renee,
      Yes that would solve the "blip" problem but it would also give me a single "ring" of the contrasting color across the instep as well as a "jog" in color. Which would be fine if you don't mind the look of it.

  • @mikabortkiewicz7427

    Is it necessary to cut main color before starting the heel? I was wondering if I could keep it, weave in heel color as I approach the heel row, work my heal. I should finish the heel where I left my main color, pick it back up and carry on knitting in the round. No?

    • @EarthtonesgirlPodcast
      @EarthtonesgirlPodcast  2 года назад

      Hi Mika,
      No it is not necessary to cut the main yarn. Just keep in mind the loose stitches at the sides/edge. And You may have to rearrange your stitches because the main color and contrast color may be on opposite sides depending on where you start the heel.

    • @EarthtonesgirlPodcast
      @EarthtonesgirlPodcast  3 года назад +1

      I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
      To answer your question, (not silly at all) I simply cut the ends off, leaving about 1/4 inch tail. And there is no need to be scared.
      Happy Sock Knitting!!

      @@EarthtonesgirlPodcast that's it?! Eep! Ok, I'm going to try. I always make such a mess out of my ends since I've never properly learned how to weave in. There's always knots and way too much woven in, makes it too thick to enjoy, especially on socks and mitts. Thank you, I'm excited to now have a much more hidden way to wear the ends. Cheers!
