I love that Hank didn’t need to roll any intimidation, it just happened and Brennan Accepted it.
He rolled to grab the guy.... he got 10 above what Brennan rolled. A crit success in the system they using is 5 above the dc (the dice you roll depends on the stat you using in the system they doing, so this makes crits in what you good at very likely but if you really bad at it insanly unlikely (rolling the highest the dice has to offer causes you to roll the same dice again and add the results. It can happen more then once as well)).
It was so effective the npc broke half of his own bones and passed out before answering the question.
TTRPG's are about collaborative storytelling, the rules just facilitate that. When things just 'work' like in this clip, rolling isn't necessary
The fact that this intimidated Brennan- What should I tell your family is so funny
@@glassy_rose what Brennan mentions in the associated Adventuring Party about this scene is so good. Normally he tries to think about what an NPC is thinking, but when he heard Hank's fact "I, Brennan, thought, 'I need to be dead *right now*.'"
Probable threats are more frightening than hyperboles, it cements the fact that this isn't posturing they could and would hurt you if need be
The uncanny valley of ineffective threats is filled with over-used or undershot hyperbole. On the one effective end of that valley exists probable threats -- on the other end of the valley, we find hyperbolic threats that are so outlandish that the mere image of the threat's execution does the job. Examples include "I will invert your ribcage" or "I can and will steal your kneecaps."
@trevorwilliams7384 That last thing you said really made me go like. "I don't know what that even means but I do find the actual convept terrifying."
You could probably remove patellas pretty easily with a claw hammer.

Technically you'd have to shake both hands and feet.
Wouldn't that be only an eighth then?
I love that the first time Hank delivered one of those lines as The Fix was so pants-shittingly effective that every single time he starts to recount an "interesting fact" everyone at the table immediately trigger a fight-or-flight response.
It's hilarious how effortlessly threatening he is without doing anything to his tone of voice.
I'd love to see someone rip this off for an antagonist in a good book or film or something.
@@businesscasualsauron imo the fact that it's so casual makes it very effective.
Between "I'm gonna torture you" and "fun fact: I'm going to break your hands and feet" one seems reasonable, the other seems like he won't yield regardless what you do.
It's like the scene in American psycho where he talks about music.
Now that I think about it, aren't Fix facts kind of the opposite of rock facts?
Right he hadn't even gotten to the threatening part yet and they'd lost it they had to prompt him again for him to finish the line.
I love that Hank is doing to Brennan what Brennan did to Aabria in Of Magic and Misfits in that he drops lines so casually menancing that the NPCs cant help but react

Bro managed a nat 20 intimidation check with out touching a dice
These are the times where I realize that Brennan and Hank probably met for the first time and experienced a level of bro love that most of us will never know.
They are the same sentence in a different font.
Brennan has been a guest on the P4A before!
Man, Hank killed it on D20.

I think I’ve figured out how John Green convince Johnson & Johnson to let their TB medicine patent lapse. Hank was just sitting in the corner, listing off anatomy facts while the board members sweat.
J&J CEO: OK, so we're going to quietly use our secondary patents to pad our revenue for Q4 and Q1 of next year. Oh, yes, Mr. Green you have something to say?
Hank: Did you know that it only takes a dozen tuberculosis bacteria to guarantee an infection in 100% of the human populace?
CEO: I... I don't think that's relevant he-
Hank: That doesn't seem like a lot of bacteria does it? It's practically the size of a q-tip head... or just one breath of exhaled air. Or maybe even a damp corner of the itinerary provided at the top of this meeting. That wasn't just MY copy of the agenda, right? Everyone's copy was just a little damp?

“Whenever somebody says “I’m gonna break every bone in your body I think ‘that’s ridiculous! It’d be way too much work,’ but I *could* break half the bones in your body,”
- Vertical Video Sensation, Hank Green
Vertical* but oh so happy to see this reference here
Oddly, the easiest bones to break are also the most protected from all manner of wounds except a simple pencil. They’re the incus, stapes, and malleus.
That spelling of vertical makes me uncomfy
When quoting something that would require you to add quotation marks, you are instead supposed to add apostrophes, for example:
“…and then he said to me, ‘You like men. You like kissing. You like men kissing.’ and so…”

Hank asking Brennan for an answer has the *exact same vibe* as a parent asking their child why they did something wrong, but we already know we're in trouble and nothing we say will make the punishment any more lenient, so we honestly just want the conversation to end as quickly as possible and get this over with.
Oh god you can't just summarize everything that's wrong with me in one youtube comment like that
"Your teacher called to say you weren't at school today. What exactly were you doing?"
"Look Ma, I'm just gonna ground myself for 2 weeks."
Good parenting tip: when I admitted what o did wrong and honestly thought about it, or if i didn't know, asked, my parents learned to not punish me if i did that, and instead made it a teaching moment. It helped stop my lying problem.
@@gwamhurt Huge. This should be standard fare in all but the worst cases.
@@gwamhurtbad parenting tip: make the child list all the demeaning and cruel things you've either said to them or they've had other people call people as a reason why they accidentally knocked something over, or even just for something they haven't even done but known there's no way the parent will ever believe them so might as well just accept it. And then when that doesn't have any effect they'll learn to just shut down and zone out, giving the minimal possible response until they've gotten bored of insulting the child.
This might be one of the best D20 moments of all time. Hank Green just adds something that no other guest star or even regular could pull off.
This is like when Brennan asked Patia (Marisha’s character in EXU Calamity) if her character would be weakest at the elbow or the shoulder
Hank's Fix voice is my new favorite thing
"I could break half the bones in your body" has a hint of "what do you want me to tell your family" and I'm here for it!
"I'm the Fix" is intimidating on its own.
That fun fact honestly reminds me of the torture scene in *"Utopia",* where the guy starts by saying *"did you know that most torturers have a preferred organ to work on?"*
"I could break half the bones in your body for not a lot of work" is terrifying
Until these clips, I could not have IMAGINED sweet, brilliant, thoughtful, kind Hank Green could be this TERRIFYING. This is AMAZING, I can't WAIT to have some free time this week to watch this campaign.
Wizard dies of 1d4 trivia damage
The anguished, off screen, "oh no..." really got me
I love this series! Every character is so good! Hank’s facts just make it better! I wanna protect Conrad with everything I have!

@@NortarachangesConrad is the biggest wubby and I love him
Kelmp: "You can just walk away and this'll be fine"
The Fix: "Speak the words I want to hear or I use logic to efficiently break half the bones in your body"
Hank is again correct, its why archeologists are more likely to find the bones of big body parts like the legs, ribs, skull etc than foot/ankle or hand/wrist bones. Those bones are so small theyre more likely to get lost or destroyed over time.
Here's a fun fact, there's a bone in your throat that is the only free floating bone in the body, meaning it's the only bone not connected to other bone! 😃
The hyoid yes? Another fun fact the hyoid is shaped like a bayonet mount and a muscle threads through the center to connect the throat to the jaw hence why everyone's jaw makes that :O face when punched in the throat
@@jcody66 The fact that you treated "a person's instinctive reaction to being punched in the throat" as common knowledge is FAR scarier than the fun fact you shared beforehand. It makes it sound like you've seen enough violence to take it for granted - which is another potent source of intimidation.
@@jcody66 1stly, what Drekomancer said
2ndly, we learn that woodpeckers' hyoid bones in the show too! It's Pasha N. and The Fix's weird flirting p:
No matter how much you extend it, that bone will never be a part of that song.
Pointing out "fun" anatomical facts can always be threatening. For instance
"Did you know that you actually don't really need a stomach to survive? Your intestines do most of the nutrition extraction. The stomach mostly just turns solid food into goo to be moved sround easier. So if you grind food into a nice paste you can still get all the nutrition you need"
And to turn that fact into a threat "... you're going to tell me what i want to know or you're going to discover first hand what food turned to paste tastes like."
Absolutely bone-chilling. Thanks for sharing.
Although that threat sounds like a loss of teeth rather than a loss of stomach
You also only need one lung. I'll let you pick which ones your favorite. I'm taking the other with me.
"Did you know that the eyes have something called 'immune privilege,' which limits local inflammation and white blood cell exposure? As a result, the immune system doesn't know that eye cell markers are friendly. If the white blood cells interact with those closed-off eye cells, they'll develop a memory response and attack any similar cells.
"That's why if you have an open globe injury and don't get appropriate treatment, you can lose sight in the other eye due to targeted immune reaction.
"So, I can punch you hard enough to injure one eye, or I can punch you hard enough to put your other eye at risk. How helpful are you feeling?"
This us the kinda shit I carry concealed for.
I'm absolutely more left leaning especially socially, but I'll be dead before I ever face such a predicament.
Fun fact - more of you folks now know I carry a weapon (and train often) than do people who know me in real life 😊
The southern accent made it even scarier holy hell
fun fact on top of that fun fact; roughly 16% of the bones in your body are the spine, so when coupled with the fun fact in the video, this means that 65%+ of the bones in your body are hands, feet and spine, which considering the size of an average human means that the majority of bones in your body don't make up the majority of space in your body, or even just space in your skeletal structure.
Holy shit yeah, we have 6 bones making up our arms, does the femur have the same multiple bone thing as our forearms? That's 4 to 6 bones in our legs. Our ribcage is more cartilage than bone iirc
@@ghoulishgoober3122the bones in your hand are greater than what is in your arm 😊
10 in shoulder and arm. 54 in wrist and hand.
@@ghoulishgoober3122 Your femur is a single bone, but you also have the patella (kneecap), then in the lower leg, you have the tibia and fibula. So, you have four bones in the leg. That would be 8 total if you have both legs.
You know, I have no context as I'm only a couple of minutes into episode 2, but as a fan of various crime shows ranging from realistic to superhero, I must say that's one quality henchman; terrified beyond reason, still gives The Fix _nothing._
“Half your bones are in your hands and feet”
Is…he gonna break them? Rip em out? THE SUSPENSE IS KILLING ME
Brennan: bird facts
Hank: hold my🍺
the fix is so good at being so dangerously threatening.
Hank Green on this is priceless
This gives me entirely too much joy.
I died when justin was talking about bitting the group and the threat was "we don't harm dogs here" 😂
As someone who gives way too many facts out to people, I have to make a character like this in my next DnD campaign
Hey, can you pass some of those facts to me? The more bone-chilling and threat-sounding, the better ^-^ the character my dm is introducing for me next session is a former black market torturer
Honestly I feel it's better if you can take fairly benign facts and make them sound super sinister given the situation at hand. But I think a great one for you would be the fact that female spotted hyenas have a pseudopenis that's shaped nearly the same as a males, they pee, mate, and give birth through it. the phallus isn't super flexible so cubs burst out through the side of the wall@@gabrialsperka422
I never would have guessed Hank would be on D20 and be _so damn good_ at it.
EVERY.TIME. The Fix has an interaction like this, I pause for a second and mentally prepare for the fact I'm about to hear because I know it's gonna fuck me up for a solid minute
The Fix, waving good-bye: "Snakes have two diiiiicks"

Hank roleplayed his threatening character so well he legitimately scared other folks at the table. That's the real deal
_"Breaking all the bones in your body... that'd be way too much work, but I could break half the bones in your body..."_
This is a real world level of terrifying. In a different reality Hank could easily be the greatest anti-hero or the most dangerous villain to ever exist.
There's something uniquely intimidating about the way that line uses the dismissal of the hyperbolic threat to emphasize how real and genuine the actual threat is.
I am so sad and equally grateful that this is the world, the timeline, the universe in which Hank Green is not yet a supervillain.
Watching Hank Green threaten Brennan Lee Mulligan in a southern accent isn’t something I knew I needed today but I guess I did!
This dude is such a good time omg💀💀
I need Hank Green to play The Fix in a Quentin Tarantino movie
Yes! I want to see that movie!
I have a feeling that Hank Green would be just as amazing a DM as Brennan is
I wouldn't have made my players roll for intimidation either, cause that's beautifully done
Going up to someone, telling them this fun fact and then asking them if they'd like to be the first human with a double digit bone count
And this, my friends, is the reason why knowledge is power.

@@Drekromancer Its amazing that we're not all dead considering that there's only one little fragile nerve that controls all of our vital organs in the body. :) Its literally less than a millimeter in diameter. All it takes is a little mishap to snap it. :)
@@Drekromancer also, Benjamin Franklin had like 10 bodies found in his basement. So thats neat.

In all my time looking at skeletons for sillies I never thought about just how many bones are in your extremities :O
Hand Green acting like Detective Blanc is beautiful
Hank catches the flying fist, a tremendous punch but caught as easily as if it were a tossed ball. He leans in close, his strength showing, his status in this battle as the stronger opponent clear to all despite his obvious lack of effort, and speaks softly, almost conversationally.
"Did you know," he says, "that almost half the bones in your body..."
Welp, redownloading dropout
Hank doing The Fix is just amazing.
Reminds me of a line from Muderbot Diaries; "If you bother her again I will break every bone in your hand and arm. It will take me about an hour."
You dont have to roll an intimidation check if you can intimidate the dm. The dice are there to supplement the actions you cant roleplay. at my table if you can backflip ill pass you the acrobatics check
That first line goes insanely hard. But I like the way you think about this stuff. You might be onto something.
But then you're not role playing, you're just playing. The point of having a character with statistics separate from the player is to play something you can't in real life. You don't want a wizard character who dumped str and cha to be able to finesse intimidate checks just because the player is good at it.
Edit: or maybe you do, I'm not going to tell you how to have fun
@@TroyLaurin yea! Aint playing fun! If you can genuinely fucking zap me with lightning ill pass you. You still roleplay the things you cant do
@@TroyLaurin I think it's fair to require at least proficiency, or the equivalent specialization of the game being played, on the character sheet to proof the idea of the character having at least as much proficiency as the player to allow for a check-less success like this.
A great roleplayer will roleplay after the dice is cast, so they know how well they should do it.
