I bought a Leica M6 out of hype and romanticism. It took me a year to realize that my Nikon FM2n worked smoother, was more versatile (1/4000s !!!) and could focus closer for those great portraits. I sold the M6 and never regretted it.

Great you're back in to it Coops. If you want to save money go Leica Thread Mount (LTM39) and get a Canon 7 and a Jupiter-8, you'll get both for $300. Big viewfinder, bright rangefinder patch, selectable viewfinder lines, very smooth film advance. And if you're lucky a working selenium meter which does not require batteries.

I once had an M6. And it was unfortunately the worst camera I ever had (and I say this although I am a German). Three times broken (light meter, view finder, frame counter), three times out for repair at Leica, three times rather high repair costs.
I then swapped it for a Bessa R4A, kept the Leica lenses (they are indeed great) and added some more from Voigtländer - and I am happy since then. The Bessa is still working fine (did just use a Fuji Neopan 400 roll with it today).
Maybe I just had bad luck with my M6. But three times bad luck for such an expensive camera was just too much for me. :-(

Thanks again for the great video Coops! I do notice that everybody is talking about precision and built quality when they talk about Leica. But I've seen many that need very expensive CLA's to get going again, while I have Pentax K1000 of almost 40 years old that is modified for my even older M42 Takumar 50 1.4. The camera nor the lens have been CLA'd ever and it looks like new. I don't know it's previous life but I shoot at least 5 rolls a week with it. Shutter speeds are accurate, meter is perfect, glass is dust and fungus free and that focus throw is so smooth and firm at the same time. The whole kit cost me less then 200 euro. It's not even close to the price of a CLA of a Leica. I think it does give some perspective in terms like quality and reliability. And maybe precision too because a patch in the center can never give the same precision als a through the lens edge to edge focus. That being said, I want a Leica.

Great review, i have had a very similar experience. I had a bessa R and now have an M4-2 with a fresh CLA that looks and feels new. Buuut i miss the Bessa... The Leicas finder is absolutely impossible to use with Glasses to see the 35mm framelines, i miss the 1/2000s and i want 40mm framelines to use my nokton classic.
About the RF base length: there is a good chart on rangefinderforum that calculates for most rf cameras whether a lens is ok to focus with regards to the baselength of the camera. The Bessa R(2) baselength is long enough for ANY lens up to 50mm f1.0. The hexanon 60 1.2 would be too fast, 75mm 2.5 is barely within reach and 90/4 is also a close pass. So unless you shoot fast, long lenses the bessa r baselength is long enough for anything you can get your hands on

Cameras are small objects of desire and certain brands evoke a strong emotional response because of associations with great historical images and/or photographers. In some cases, technical or design aspects will be the motivator. Perceived quality can be a factor, in the way the engineering excellence of a Rolex clearly surpasses that of a Timex, although both are capable of accurately and reliably displaying the time. Other than situations that require very specific requirements, the 'artist-photographer should be capable of producing great work from any number of cameras/lenses now cheaply available. Thinking that we need to have all of our ducks in a row and be armed with the best equipment to be a photographer isn't healthy thinking. Van Goch still painted, even when he couldn't afford good paints or even canvases.

Just saw one of your vids for the 1st time. Really enjoyed it. I have a Bessa-L with the 15mm Heliar f4.5, but the Rangefinder I really love is my Fujica V2 . Beautiful, very smartly designed fast lens and they're very reasonable on EBay. There is a great, very detailed video that I saw and then found my camera at a thrift store the next day for $20. It was an omen to me, and I love it. LEICA, LOVE them, but can't afford ! All my digital are FUJI and I think they make the most intelligent cameras especially for people who still love the analog styling with the modern improvements. And they listen to their people and constantly improve their firmware and each successive camera. And they are very reasonably priced from the get-go ! You can also get older lenses and adapters for a lot of experimental fun. That's the point for me with Fuji, high quality, great prices and fun, fun, and did I say FUN !!! Leica M2 M3, M4 are my favourite cameras much cheaper than the M6 or M7. The whole point of buying the early cameras is that you learn about the sunny 16 rule, which brings an increased pleasure, fun and understanding of photography. On another point the early Ms don't need batteries the Bessa does.

There isn't anything impressive technically about a Leica, there really isn't. It's as simple as a camera gets, but it's all about the user experience. If you consider it's bested in technical ability by a Pentax Spotmatic, and how popular Leicas are, you know it's just something special... I have shot and owned a ton of cameras and nothing compares to how a Leica M feels in hand. It is just perfect in it's simplicity and the attention to detail just makes it a joy to shoot. They got it right 60+ years ago
You can't go wrong with either system though and you do get more convenience with the Bessas. The price is definitely better too. M4s are somehow over 1000USD?? M6s for close to 2000? Come on. I could never justify paying almost an extra $1000 for an internal meter over my M2.

To me there are 4 flagship metered RF's and they are the Lecia M6, Voigtlander Bessa R2A, Minolta CLE, and the Zeiss Ikon ZM. I'd love to see a comparison of all 4. I own the Minolta CLE and my biggest complaint is the short baselength, lack of metering in full manual, and the absence of ergonomics. I've never used a Leica or Zeiss Ikon, but the Bessa is far more comfortable vs. the Minolta. I used one in a film camera shop and loved it. Still pricey these days however and will run you 800-1000USDfor a body if you find a decent deal. Zeiss Ikon is known for the massive rangefinder. I know nothing about how it handles or how well built it is.

  • @mattl347

Great to see you posting new content again. I've missed it. I have a Bessa R and like it a lot, although the meter seems to constantly over expose in most lighting situations (common problem I think?). Strap lugs seem to be in a strange place too, so the balance is off with most lenses fitted. I find the RF easy to use and the VF is incredibly bright. Very comfortable camera to use and thoroughly recommended. I don't have a Leica M body to compare it with, only an IIIf. Those two are very different bodies. If the workmanship in an IIIf is anything to go by, the Bessa won't compare to an M body in terms of build quality. The Bessa is a great range of camera bodies and you won't be afraid of taking them out to shoot with either :-) Cheers

Great points. In my opinion the Leica's are a little overrated if you look at the function, but they are an absolute joy to shoot because they are so well built. I was looking for an R3M or R4M, before I came across the M5 that I ended up getting.
For anyone wanting to get a film rangefinder I would highly recommend a Canonet QL25 - I have two myself - because it's cheap and extremely well built, the lens is sharp and the viewfinder and rangefinder are comparable to an M2 (if you get one in mint condition).

Shoots, I have a Canon Vt with the trigger wind , save alot on getting a Leicavit, but I also got a Yashica YF in which it is my Bessa Copy but the YF came out in 1958 by the company name Nicca which it merge with Yashica, and on both cameras that I can still get 39mm lenses, either from Japan, Germany, and Russian brand, and also that Cosina has stop making the Bessa line 35mm RF cameras, But they are still making the lenses for M mount... So I rather still be keeping the M6 line.... as I am not a fan of the M7 line...

Bessa's have skyrocketed in price in recent years. In my opinion it's not worth the premium to get a Bessa unless you need the different frameline options that the various models provide. Leica's are just built better and feel very solid, and in many cases you can find M2's and M4-2's for less than some models of the Voigtlanders. I've shot with the R2A, R3M and they were great fun, but they just didn't compare to my M2 or M6.

A big factor for getting an R2 was the age of the camera, Leica M's are 25+ years older than a Bessa and have plenty of mechanical issues to consider, it just wasn't worth the worry of something going wrong with an expensive Leica

the only issue with selling a Leica is that you will buy one again later. So moving to the Bessa seems cheaper, but it actually costs your more in the end.

You can always get a Leica M repaired because spare parts are readily available. I think trying to find spares for the Bessa's might prove difficult should anything break. The answer is simple. Buy a Leica to last a lifetime (or several) or buy a Bessa and throw it away when it wears out...

    • @shootswithcoops
      @shootswithcoops  Год назад

To be honest man I’m pretty angry with Leica right now .you can’t carry on about wanting to save film photography etc etc etc, all the media push they have been doing over the last 2 months in the run up to the New M6 release. Then ask people to pay $8400 AUD for one. It’s the 1% of people who shoot film and can afford that camera
The original rumour; new M6 that was lower cost than the MP without brass etc etc, they were poised to absolutely kill it. This is a camera that if they really wanted to “save” film should have been built and priced much differently, around the 4-5k AUD mark
If they had have made something the masses could potentially afford, and they sold enough of them, that could almost push the other big manufacturers; pref Nikon and a new FM3a, to bring new film cameras to market again
But they have royally screwed the pooch on this one.
People can bitch and moan about mechanical perfection all they want, and how it’s worth it for a handmade piece of equipment, but that’s just the bullshit they tell themselves to justify the purchase.
Yes they are great cameras. Probably the best made cameras on the planet, but In todays global financial market, only the rich will buy one to put on their shelf.

Am I the only one who has enough budget to buy a leica but instead buying a Bessa R4m mainly because its light weight advantage?
There were weeks that I was so desperated pulling out my gears and calculated all weight. Saving only 50 grams on a day trip under 40 degree Celcius is important to me.
The Bessa, R4a & R4m, framelines of 21mm and 25mm also fit to my wide lenses and shooting style but the total combo weight always come first.
I don't care about a life long lasting camera after I pass away. I just need an easy carrying camera with good ergonomic while I am alive.
If I bought a Leica, I would keep it in a humidity control cabinet as my vintage watches. Nowaday, I use a smart watch with its a heart rate and an oxygen censors. LOL

    • @ComGoBoo
      @ComGoBoo 4 года назад +1

Yeah, the camera doesn't make a noticeable difference to the photos, you're right about that.
I've owned a Bessa R2M and still own a Leica M6. For me, I can say that the M6 being so nice to use, feeling so good in the hand and operating so smoothly is probably what keeps me going out and shooting.
I think if I still had a Bessa, it would probably sit in some corner collecting dust.
The Leica is just the right tool for me. Any other tool would fail to deliver what I need to keep shooting.
But I completely see the point here. The Bessa is a extremely good alternative which for many people might even be the better choice.
Especially if they would have to compromise in their lens choice if they get an M6. The glass is far more important than the camera.

First of all, it’s quite sexy in person, especially the black model with the streps only on the side like it’s meant to, secondly you have giant hands so you will really appreciate the slightly larger body and over hanging shutter speed dial. The M5 has the most precise light meter, most informative viewfinder and the best ergonomics of any rangefinder camera. Also it’s a Leica, so it doesn’t need a battery to shoot, has a quiet shutter, life’s longer, feels better and has a much more prices rangefinder than the Bessa.
