Vince Clarke is a synth genius too, to be able to put together music like that with very basic equipment takes some serious skill. No ordinary group and far better than anything in todays pop chart which is completely unlistenable to my ears.

This entire album, Upstairs at Eric's, is outstanding, but you cannot go wrong with Alison Moyet as a singer. Such a unique, soulful and powerful voice. I highly recommend "Only You" and "Midnight" to get a couple other great samples of Yaz (or Yazoo in Britain) and their awesome synthpop. The keyboardist, Vince Clark, has some other impressive stops on his resume with Depeche Mode and Erasure. Great review as always, guys!

Early in her career she did punk and new wave music, but over the course of her career she has done nearly every conceivable style of music. The sound of 1982 Dance Clubs. The powerful wail of Alison Moyet over Vince Clarke's percolating synths. Many people thought the singer was a guy until they saw a photo. (Even then they weren't quite sure.) 😛 "Don't Go" followed "Situation" as Billboard Dance chart #1s for the British group Yaz. Yaz was originally Yazoo in the U.K. -- but another Yazoo existed in U.S. so a sticker was placed over the "oo" on the early U.S. pressings. "Don't Go" peaked for 2 weeks @ #1 on the Billboard Dance chart after "Situation" peaked 4 weeks @ #1. "Situation" crossed over to the Billboard Hot 100 (#73) and the R&B/Soul chart (#31) but "Don't Go" didn't chart on either. Great record!

You asked if there was another strong eighties synth vocalist that you've covered before: the Eurythmics with Annie Lennox. They were actually considered a synth band early on.
A couple of other strong, danceable synth singles from the period that you used to hear in clubs are "Living on the Ceiling" (1982) by Blancmange and "I've Been Waiting for Tomorrow" (1983) by The The.

He asked her to do a vocals on a couple of demos of tracks he had written, he sent the demo to the label with the intent of finding another singer or act (he had hankering to become song writer/producer, rather than an artist), but the label said no, said her voice was the perfect match for them... "Don't Go" is a song by British synth-pop band Yazoo (known in the US and Canada as Yaz). It was released in 1982 as the second single from their debut album, Upstairs at Eric's (20 August 1982). The song peaked at number three on the UK Singles Chart, becoming Yazoo's second top 5 hit. In the US, where the band was known as Yaz, the song was their second big hit on the American dance chart, where it spent two weeks at number one in October 1982. Their first American dance chart hit was "Situation", which had also gone to number one on this chart earlier the same year. The music video for the song features band members Alison Moyet and Vince Clarke in a sort of haunted mansion with Clarke cast in the role of Victor Frankenstein. The song re-entered the UK Dance Chart on 13 December 2009 at number 30, peaking at number 15 on 2 January 2010.
