my favorite George W.B moment is the "Now watch this drive" after giving a speech about terrorists
Thus, the Golf War began.

@@Batmans_Pet_Goldfish So that's why we invaded foreign turf under false pretenses. What was gitmo then, a sand trap?
The shoe throwing wasn't technically embarrassing, but it was probably the funniest
It wasn't funny. They could have contained explosives. Also, in that part of the world, shoes are seen as the most disrespectful object to throw at people.
@@dj71162 You must be fun at parties.
@@dj71162but they weren’t? That’s like saying Teddy getting shot wasn’t badass bc he could’ve died
They weren't though it was just a shoe, it was funny and definitely embarrassing for Bush @dj71162
Many in the Arab world wanted those shoes to be kept in museum
I don't think their definition of embarrassing is the same as mine
Should have called it most embarrassing political moments
yeah, calling a literal genocide "an embarrassing moment" is putting it mildly, to say the least.
"Oopsies I accidentally sent troops to Vietnam🤭"
Yeah, January 6th and the Japanese-American internment were not embarrassing, they were disgraceful and a stain on the country.
@@insightfulhistorian1861 True though the internment camps are the worse of the two.
"Ma, Ma, Where's my Pa?"
Cleveland's supporters actually retaliated with, "Off to the White House, Ha Ha Ha".
What a great rebuttal 😂
One of my favorite comments about George H.W. Bush's statement is that he *actually* said "read my lips: know new taxes."

The showing of a certain horrible movie in the White House by Wilson should have made this list.
That should have been right up there. I've actually seen that particular movie (History class in college, within my major and my era of concentration). Pure propaganda movie, for sure.
Why? Wilson was just a reflection of his time. People seem to think that racism was solely a Southern problem. We just didn't hide ours like the rest of the country did. Also. I think FDR did much worse when he put American citizens of Japanese decent into Prison camps and had the US government seize their property and assets.
Or JFK nearly starting a nuclear war.

The most embarrassing moment was Nixon only getting caught because Forrest Gump told on him
Ulysses Grant is my hero. You inspired me by your videos to read his memoirs. Fascinating stuff
Same, but I'm not done yet. At no point in my life have I ever really liked to read at all; and that's still true now (I've had the book for coming up on 6 months now and I'm still not done with it), but it's been fascinating nonetheless.
12:40 Not to bring up today's politics, but former President Trump is also a president who failed to get re-elected, which would be the first since Bush Sr..
Also, if Biden fails to get re-elected this year, this will be the first time since the 1892 election that we've had two one-term presidents in a row, not counting terms where the president died in office or resigned.
Also if Trump wins he will be the second person to serve 2 non consecutive terms which it seems like all evidence is leading to him winning
Even though he wasn't ever President, Al Haig during the Reagan assassination attempt was an infamous when he said, "Constitutionally, gentlemen, you have the president, the vice president, and the secretary of state in that order, and should the president decide he wants to transfer the helm to the vice president, he will do so." Like what was he trying to do in that moment?!
Also, George W Bush was in the Texas Air National Guard during the Vietnam War, not the Air Force Reserve
RIght? Because I took Civics in High School and he completely skipped over the President Pro Tempore of the Senate.
@@danielallen3454exactly, not to mention the Speaker of the House! Plus if you watch that press conference, he looks completely out of breath and trying not to pass out! I think it's safe to say that he wasn't thinking clearly at the time.
No. If the President is temporarily incapacitated during time of peace the SecState if acting President, during war SecDef is. Inly if the President dies or is removed from office is it the Vice President. You must remember, the VP was kept in the dark for most administrations. Ie Truman found out about the nuclear weapons after he became President.

Absolutely! Whether it was the CIA backing Operation Ajax in Iran in 1953 or the Bay of Pigs invasion, they have done plenty of bad. If there is one government agency that has to be abolished, it should probably be the CIA.
Sorry to hear that you lost your laptop hope you get it back soon, Chris
That's my personal nightmare, I'll lose my laptop on a trip. I always back up if this is going out of the house, because I need the stuff on that thing. I hope the railroad company finds it and returns it.
"No new Taxes" - A lot of us voted for Ross Perot because of that broken promise.
That’s also why Pat Buchanan challenged Bush in 1992 for the Republican nomination.
They could do a top 10 most embarrassing Vice Presidential moments. But every single entry would be Dan Quayle.
With Bush, the intelligence wasn't wrong. It was cooked. Cheney being the cook
Yeah, from what I understand, the WMD were chemical weapons from the '90s.
Yeah, Cheney was the puppet master of the entire Bush 43 administration
@Dragonite43 and he interfered I. The Defense intelligence agency, which was the agency reporting all the bs. Every other agency said no, no WMD
@@halcooper3070it was the CIA, not the DIA.
And it was only American intelligence that believed it. Most other countries didn't believe it at all, which is why the US fought in Iraq almost alone...
Guy talking about Bill Clinton: the Lewinsky scandal left a lasting stain on his legacy
Everyone watching:👀
To be fair to Wilson (whoa guys, settle down), he was elected in November of 1916, the Zimmerman Telegram was January 1917, Inauguration was March 4, 1917, and Wilson called for war before Congress on April 2, 1917 (and they agreed 82-6).
FDR asked Congress to declare war against Japan the same year he was re-inaugurated after campaigning that "The nation will remain a neutral nation, as long as it remains within my power to prevent, there will be no blackout of peace in the United States"
The way you said it made it sound like you thought it was an unfounded about-face... tho I'm pretty sure that's *not* how you actually see it.
(That said, Sedition Acts can bugger off, whether it's Wilson, Adams, or what Bush tried to push through)
You forgot the Black Tom explosions that happened July 30, 1916 due to agents of the then German Empire. It was so severe that it turned American sentiment more pro-war than pro-peace, and necessitated America creating an intelligence community in the country which now span multiple agencies (FBI, CIA, NSA, etc.).
I think Eisenhower's denial of a U-2 spy plane shot down should have received a mention.
Eh, not really embarrassing on the same level.
no
Yes, James Buchanan is remembered for his inaction, but he did also MAKE some very bad decisions such as endorsing the pro-slavery Lecompton constitution in Kansas when it was clear that the majority of the people living in Kansas were not pro-slavery. This, in my opinion, is an outright violation of his presidential oath.
Hey VTH, sorry about your laptop I hope you can get it back. I have been subbed since 10,000 subscribers and I love these reaction videos because you put in good, interesting information. Keep up the good work!
My honorable mention during H.W.'s presidency is when he puked on the Japanese Prime Minister's lap 😂 the Japanese made a word for it: bushu-suru (ブッシュする). Literally, "To do the Bush thing."
Number one should've been William Henry Harrison not wearing a coat at his inauguration.
Ouch.
Misconception. Evidence now points to him dying from drinking the water in D.C. rather than getting hypothermia .
Drinking the DC water was actually what killed him according to recent evidence.
That's not what killed him though
Not sure when you recorded this (it says it was posted 6 hours ago), but you said George H.W. Bush is the only President in your lifetime not to win re-election, but Trump also didn't win his (first) bid for re-election (I am currently only 13 minutes into the video)
I assume that is because Trump and many of his supporters believe he did not legitimately lose because of shenanigans in 2020
I was thinking the same thing
I don't believe Chris falls into that category. My guess is that he intentionally didn't mention him because he is currently running and could end up serving a second term afterall. If that happens, Biden would also become a single term President
A lot of historians avoid things that have happened within a certain window because of recency bias. It could be that he wasn’t even thinking about the 2020 election since it was pretty recent history

In reference to George Bush (sr). I voted for him the 1st time. I specifically remember he also indicated he would veto if congress passed any. When he didn't keep this promise, I didn't vote for him. I didn't vote for Perot either I voted for another independent candidate.
I liked this video and your analysis of it, but I do wish they'd split it into two videos; one about biggest stains on presidential kegacies and one about just actual emberassing moments (the "No new taxes" being a possible example, even milder being Ford's "tumble"). Maybe even a third: post/pre-presidential moments.
#20 -- And if anyone had bothered to hear the speech Bush made they'd know "Mission Accomplished" meant the mission to liberate Iraq from Saddam Hussein. And made very plain that the really challenging part will be the rebuilding/reconstruction of Iraq into hopefully a good democratic, non-dictatorship nation and it will take many years and should absolutely NOT figure on any sort of quick fixes.
Boris Johnson also said 'read my lips, no new taxes' then put taxes to a 70 year high...whoops! Also with the UK election today Chris, can u do something related to that??
Well, there were no new taxes. He just raised the ones that were there already.

Fun little fact when Bush made that statement on that ship my brother was on that ship severing, what they don't tell you though is they where so close to San Diego. You could see the shore from the ship but they made them stop out there so Bush could fly on and make his statement. He also said at one point the secret service had to tell them to be quiet cause they where like moving stuff ready to go ashore the next day and Bush was trying to sleep.
And that ship Abraham Lincoln was the one that got deployed longer then it should've of cause of some shady stuff not getting into that, so they where all ready to go home they where not happy about that.

I thought the "Mission Accomplished" banner was finaly claimed to be only for that aircraft carrier that was on the way back home from it's mission.
Then Bush PR used it for visuals.

How the showing of the Birth of a Nation isn’t on here is surprising considering that is pretty surface level
That comment about the CIA with the Bay of Pigs was hilarious😂
Great video as always Chris! One nitpick I have is that if you look at the 92 election, after Perot's campaign initally tanked and he dropped out, and after the Democratic convention, Clinton was leading by around 55 to 31 percent. Perot got back in and won the first debate, which boosted his numbers to 19%, but ultimately, it was the economy and the broken pledge that cost Bush the election. If it was a two-way race, Clinton still would have won comfortably (would have been best for the country if Perot won, though).
The trail of tears was especially bad because Jackson flat out ignored a Supreme Court ruling that said the removal was illegal. He just chose not to listen to it.
"Embarrassing" is the wrong kind of adjective for most of these. Many of them are disgraceful, and most of the embarrassement is in historical hindsight. For George W Bush they could have picked his speech where he said [I paraphrase out of memory] "our enemies never stop thinking about harming the US, and so do we".
You have to admit, it's almost admirable the lengths a political group will stoop to in order to gain or remain in power
Yeah... admirable like denying the election results of a free and fair election... admirable, that's the word.

I was going to ask on your newest video of you could react to this. Perfect timing, time to get some snacks
Honorable mention imo, FDR withholding knowledge of the Manhattan Project from Truman. I can imagine what was going through Truman's mind when he was told "by the way Roosevelt was working on a Dooms Day weapon that he purposely kept you in the dark about, maybe he though you were dumb or untrustworthy, I dunno..."
What Harding did is an example of the recent decision by the Supreme Court can have drastic consequence no matter what party or ideology no one should be held unaccountable for there actions.
That's incorrect. There is accountability. There always was, and there still is. What the recent SCOTUS decision did was put on paper to limit the power of courts of states and the DoJ. To prosecute a President they need to be impeached and convicted by the senate then the DoJ/State courts can go after him for that crime since Conviction just removes him from office. Without that decision in place, A Republican or any party leader that gets into office could go after and prosecute any former or would be future president. A prime example of this would be Trump getting into office and having his DoJ go after Obama, or the state of Texas, on the grounds of murder (he did drone strike US citizens). With the decision that was released they can't do that without congress impeaching and convicting Obama. Without that protection we'll see a back and forth of prosecution of political rivals across the political spectrum. It would undermined the checks and balances that were set in place by the founding fathers.
Yeah I don’t really agree with it. It’s way too vague
They are just restating what the Constitution already says.

Not all of us were on-board with Iraq. I was 12 and I knew it was BS. But I don't want to turn the comment section toxic. Good reaction as always even if I didn't always agree!
At the time, 73% of Americans supported invading Iraq and just 16% opposed. That's overwhelming support.
Another thing people rarely mention about the Bush & Iraq thing - Saddam was being very intentionally uncooperative & threw out UN weapons inspectors.
I know it's easily ignored or forgotten now, but Iraq HAD WMDs in the recent past & had even used them against its own people. They finally agreed to cooperate with UN laws & inspections to show they were on the up & up, only to then abruptly stop.
Even before the actual invasion, Bush & US officials all but said they will invade if they don't address this & begin cooperation again, but Saddam was defiant & refused.
So along with the inaccurate intelligence being provided to Bush & the UN, satellite images showing these mobile sites, and Saddam's refusal to continue cooperating with the UN, it made people on both sides convinced there was something bad they were hiding.
I'm seriously not trying to justify anything, the war was definitely a huge mistake, only providing context for those who think it was solely a Bush thing when in reality, 90% of congress agreed & voted for war.
Actually, the inspectors were allowed back in and were within weeks of a formal report declaring that Iraq had complied with UN resolutions.
Iraq had used chemical weapons 15 years before in the Iran-Iraq War and against Kurds and Shi’ite Muslims who were supportive of Iran. So it wasn’t recently. Saddam didn’t want it known by his enemies within and without Iraq because he was afraid of invasion.
It's worth noting that public opinion in other countries who joined the war was very different from public opinion in the US. In the UK there was huge opposition to the Iraq war among the public (though the two main parties did support the war). It was widely known here that the UN weapons inspectors were close to declaring that Iraq didn't actually have WMDs anymore.

Then the drop the Top 2. And I was like "Oh. Yeah."
In 2003 I was here in Australia and I had enough sources to know that the WMD thing was rubbish.
As interesting as it is that Trump is the first former president to be convicted, it's the only event on their list that happened outside the time the individual served as President. I think they should've kept it to the confines of their presidency, then maybe do a video about most embarrassing moments during the life of a president, haha.
The grover cleveland thing also happened outside his presidency I believe.
It happened literally within days of the election, for the purpose of influencing the election. I think it's splitting hairs to look that as being outside of his presidency. It's not like this happened back in the 1990s when he was just a real estate guy.
Which if they go after him for things he did they have to go after every living president except maybe Carter for awful shit they did in their lifes
Well they could have gone with the "injecting bleach" and "exposing your blood to UV light" thing. Or his perfect phone call. Or the image where world leaders lean in on him, while he sits there arms crossed like a child. There are so many moments during his time in office, that I think it is okay to have him on the list :D
honestly, the time the entire UN laughed at him would have fit better
I’d take one of the more dubious entries and replace it with Jimmy Carter wnd the hostage crisis where Iran took several Americans as hostages whom were not released until barely after Ronald Reagan’s inauguration. As an aside, it was a situation that saw NBC create their now famous news show _Nightline_ , originally hosted by Ted Koppel, it gave nightly updates on the ordeal.
My guy looks so beyond stoned…but who am I to judge lol
The one thing about the Monica Lewinsky scandal that doesn't get talked about enough in that it was less about the affair, it was more about it being a superior having sexual relations with a subordinate. The power that Clinton had, not only as President, but as the "boss" of Lewinsky, he had power over her with regards to her job and could use that he well pleased
also the fact that he lied under oath
Still the impeachment was BS pure political reasons and not actual reasons although Clinton is a heinous individual
Compared to the things today, it isnt even that serious. Man the 90s were really innocent, if only they knew the scandals that were to come.
Hey Chris, you should react to a video called "Stopping at McDonald's in 1989", where the guy is vlogging at a McDonalds, in 1989. Seems more like 1983 to me though. It would be nice to get someone who was around at the time to do a commentary about it.
There's another similar cool video by a Spanish vlogger who vlogged himself on top of the World Trade Center before it was destroyed. Super HD footage. That one's called "SUBIMOS a las TORRES GEMELAS 3 meses antes del 11 SEPT"
No shot the whiskey rebellion was worse than the mission accomplished thing 💀💀
Specifically regarding the Reagan bit, two things come to mind. 1. There was no legal way to do the Iran-Contra scandal. It relied on defending Reagan by being like a mob operation, where the leader has plausible deniability, and even then Reagan’s best defense was a failing mind and whether or not he actually had no memory of what happened. People did not want to imprison an old man they remembered fondly and that likely saved him.
2. Regarding AIDS- if you’re an American, and you believe you are just and good, once you hear that tens of thousands of Americans are dying, regardless of political affiliation, you have an obligation to care. It would be like not caring about Ebola because it mostly affects Karen’s, that’s not how this should work and people in the 80’s knew better, including Reagan.
Crazy that if harding lived a bit longer we might not have had the recent suprene court ruling
