Did not know Simon Phillips’ prominence until seeing him record and perform with Hiromi Uehara, who I believe is genius and savant on piano. After learning about Simon Phillips’ amazing career, I felt wholly ignorant, but then knew why, with so many drummers out there, Hiromi wanted Simon Phillips. This video is just another example of his amazing talent.
Just love the sound of sax and overdriven guitar holding the melody in unison. When they split it adds colour. When they combine it is sublime. This is surely one of the greatest fusion albums since Romantic Warrior. And I thought Protocol IV was genius. Incredible musicianship. Wonderful composition. This just totally floats my boat in a rough sea of nearly albums. Perfect.
You haven't lived until you get to sit right in front of Simon's drum set for a whole show while eating a NY strip dinner. Come back to Florida! The Funky Biscuit needs you.
Yeah had a whole table to see protocol 4 for my birthday few yrs ago at the biscuit... No reschedule no refund.. enjoy our$. 👎 Obviously P4 has nothing to do with.
@@EarthAltar told it wasnt cancelled but to be rescheduled.. then they closed. Then they reopened cpl month later sold tix to more new shows closed up again. Then reopened months later and you had to buy new tix for the same rescheduled shows. As of NOW its supposed to be a new company with same owner + Investor (s).
@@drewmesiano7602 Geez. That blows. I've only been there twice. Once for Pat Travers and the Protocol show. It's a cool little place, but they need to get their act together if they want to stay in business. Can't treat people like that and expect to survive.
@@EarthAltar yeah sucked.I don't live there but Ive been there several times. Including Albert Castiglia for New Year's( great show) where my wife was fed raw chicken in the dark, but they gave us a togo box that sat on our table for 2+ hrs.🙄. she spent Jan 1st puking til 1pm. I'm sure she wasn't the only one. No refunds were offered. Just a Have a nice day.
Well, I am a rocker at hearth and I LOVE THIS. Complex but not overly complicated, groovy yet smooth, punchy but not tryhard mess. Just the right amount of everything... ♥
Just saw them last night in Oakland, at Yoshi's... Possibly the most flawless execution of complex music I have ever witnessed... I've seen Simon w Hiromi many times, earlier Protocol versions... Chick Corea, Al DiMeola group, so many others.. all great in different ways. But THIS group was stunning, absolutely stunning. Simon's drumming was superlative as usual, but the guitar and sax solos were so stratospherically magnificent. We simply couldn't believe what we were seeing. A remarkable accomplishment, well done gentlemen! Bought the CD and enjoyed it on the way home. Long may you run!
The epitome of coolness! I don't know how Simon stays so perfect! I'm almost 60 I can remember playing to his drum parts from Duncan Brown, Jon Anderson, Stanley Clarke , 801 in the 70's being able to pull off his awesome double bass parts that I so meticulously ripped off, I can barely pull it off now and I work out a few times a week. Awesome song! Buy the album its fantastic! Peace from Detroit MI.
LOVE this album ( " Dark Star " may be my all time favorite piece written by Simon )! The songs and the newest version of the band ( as a whole ) are rhythmically tighter than the previous versions of Protocol but with A LOT more compositional flare.
Welp. Watching these maestros play at this level while (some) watching sheet music and STILL whipping up a nearly unbelievable storm of energy and sparkle and verve- jaw-dropping.
The Fantastic V. It is one of my primary passions to view drummers at work ... Simon's style is also from the aesthetic point of view my #1 among all that incredibly talented drummers.
Saw these guys last night at Jazz Alley in Seattle. Wasn’t sure exactly what to expect, but it was in fact, these very musicians. I couldn’t of been more excited. Great show!!!!
Buenísimo de NECTAR. Muchaa gracias por la música que nos mantiene unidos. 🎶🎵💎 Very good from NECTAR. Thank you very much for the music that keeps us together. 🎶🎵💎
This is secretly the greatest Kiesel Ad placement of all time lol. Watching this for the 100th time, just noticed the giant stack of kiesel gig bags behind Alex
Funny I told Alex once he reminded me of Alan and he smiled YES I AGRESS Holdsworth flavor for sure, He's playing with Simon at the Baked Potato in March with Alphonso Johnson fantastic incredible go check it out
Pure fire. As is the whole album. The video is an excellent production, as well. Watching you guys play as we hear it gives then track life. Well done.
👍👍🎖🎖🏅🏅🏆🏆 *Super album Super artists. Simon Phillips, I can very well imagine that such a project takes a lot of time and little sleep Really relaxing. Going on tour and recording an album or doing other projects eats away at the body. Everything you have achieved and done in your life takes 2-3 lives for others. I'm happy if you come to Germany then I'll be right there. All the best to you and your family. Greetings from Germany - Cologne* 👍👍🎖🎖🏅🏅🏆🏆
When most people are retiring this guy is shredding it on the drums. First time I heard him was on the judas priest album sin after sin. Not a bad song on that album and the drumming is stellar. Then on There and back with Jeff beck. He's played with so many people I don't think he even remembers who he's played with. And his playing on JP was showing metal drummers how it should be done. I think he was 20 yrs old when he played with them.
How on earth I ever missed these guys until just now, truly evades me. Good Lord, this music is so _me._ These guys are like a cross between Return to Forever and Weather Report, with the rapid unison lines and (almost overly-) perfect melodies. I had a dear (departed) friend who never liked Weather Report, calling them "too tight," as in _uptight,_ not loose enough for his style. As much as I loved and respected him, the man was nevertheless a Philistine. Protocol V is amazing!
I still love the little guy with the big drums. Unbelievable feel and passion! I'd love to see a bluray/ dvd realease of the entire album(s) done this way. In the meantime the cd's/ lp are always in regular rotation. Cheers from Thunder Bay Simon and Co.!
Perfectionism! Appreciate for Simon Phillips and the other members of the band. I have always admired Simon Phillips for marvelous drumming style and musicianship.

Simon and Earnest are so tight. Absolutely on fire. They play with and off each other like Alex Acuna and Jaco Pastorius.

Phenomenal musicianship
Simon's one of my favorite drummers complete masterclass
That´s modern Jazz at its finest, thank you!!!
Top level playing and killer chops.
Simon,Alex, Ernest, Otmar, Jacob...all deliver
If they couldnt Simon would nt be playin with em
I already love this Protocol V... especially the last track, "The long road home". I can't stop to play it... a very masterpiece.
Same here
grandissimo disco anche stavolta, concordo 100%
Simon non delude mai, ma secondo me ciò che riesce da anni nei protocol è ernest tibbs al basso, una macchina da guerra !
Yes
Exactly, same here…truly a masterpiece. One of if not favorite songs. Doesn’t get old! So much to break down. Just love it!!

Love this album
Hallo, meiner Meinung nach ist die Leistung hervorragend und das Thema unrealistisch fortschrittlich.
Alex has a flow and style sorta Holdsworth-ish - loving it.
Spot on, very much so.

so very good. Phillips, as always. and the tone, voice, sax and guitar as one. yep, that was it. :) brill!!!
Amazing show at Seattle's Jazz Alley this past Wednesday.
Earnest's head movements and facial expressions always make me smile. And Simon is the best.
Loving this track since I heard it for the first time last week. It’s been an ear worm since then.

Monstro!!! Demais!!!!
Absolutely stunning!
Wonderful! Superb!! On the other hand this reminded me Chick Corea's superband Return to Forever of 70's. This sound is more contemporary of course...
Killer song!
Fantastic stuff and still the best drum sound in the business.
I love fusion. I bought your cd online and it is great!!!!!!
