- In this week's episode of "The Story Of" I take a deep dive into the history of Zayre. Zayre was a massive northeastern discount department chain that was founded in 1919 as a women's fashion store. The coming decades saw very substantial growth for the chain, however in the 1980's an ambitious buy would leave the once dominating retailer bankrupt.

If I may add a little constructive criticism, there's too much of a volume difference between your spoken content versus the clips of commercials and the like.
My apologies! I'll try to fix that in my videos going forwards.
@@TheNSTLKIAChannel Thank you. I otherwise enjoyed the video and found it to be very informative. I used to shop at Zayre and this really took me back.
I worked at Zayre from 1985 until they closed as Ames in 1990 in Ohio.. I started in Receiving, moved to the Stocking Crew and worked overnights when they were open 24 hours a day during Christmas. Then I went on to work in Automotive and then finally in Electronics.. It was my first job out of high school and a fun place to work. I still have one of the orange Zayre baskets you would carry around and fill if you didn't want to push a cart around.
I really like going to Zayre's as a kid in the 70's here in Nashville, Tennessee. Thanks for sharing.

I worked for Zayre as a management trainee for about 5 months in 1982... working there sucked but I did have some nice co-workers and was always a shopper. They had a good record department.
Dude you seriously need to fix the volume level on your videos.
I'll never forget it, 1989 it was very sad for what I saw on the tv screen:The news on Zayre stores going out of business as I remember they were showing one of our city's location in Homewood, Al otherwise GreenSprings Hwy. and I can remember a news anchor or customer saying we still have Kmart and Walmart but Zayre was the spot for Cabbage Patch Kids, Transformers, Atari and other accessories.
So for the fans of Zayre who misses the place
We still like to make Zayre our store!
I was really young when I discovered Zayre. I would have wanted to go everyday had my parents lived a few blocks away from it. Like most typical kids in every generation. I was easily amazed at the variety of toys they organized in the toys department aisles. If only Zayre had gathered all of it's unsold toy merchandise. Kept them in storage. Then sold them online during late 90s when the internet was gaining massive mainstream momentum.
Can’t wait for the Venture one!
It'll be coming soon! Just gotta finish my exams 😁
Hi…The correct pronunciation of Zayre’s first store location is Hi-annis and is spelled Hyannis, located in Massachusetts.
Ah okay. Thanks for clearing that up for me!
I remember shopping at Zayres in Batavia,N.Y.
We had one in our town of Waukegan, Illinois. It latter became an Ames for a year or two.
Im subscribed to your channel!! I'm living for your videos and research!!! Cloverleaf Mall was my old stomping ground and all of the background music on your video is my type of music! Where did you find it?
I find it from all kinds of videos! I have a playlist on my channel where I compile all of the music I use.
Absolutely love Enjoy Yourself by Saint Pepsi
My friends used to call me the Kmart kid. Musta been the shoes!
T.J. Maxx was basically their Phoenix.
I loved Zarye
I wouldn’t say the “hyper market” idea is more popular in Europe, the Middle East and those other areas. I mean isn’t basically every Walmart and Target a combo of a department store and supermarket?
We had 5 stores in the Worcester, Ma area alone !!
The mother in the commercial at 7:42 looks very clingy!
Zayre in chicago was so popular when it left a lot of people didnt like it was gone a lot of people never knew that it switched a little to tj maxx to this day I'd prefer Zayre over tj maxx but it is what it is walmart a lil like zayre but to me Zayre and Woolworths were to America Gems of shopping
5:59 Zayre still lives on somewhat through this offshot.
Your naration volume is WAY too low!
How did Zayre fail - no they changed their name to TJX Companies and they survive today. What was known as Zayre was sold to Ames who had no idea how to run a discounter on the level of Zayre or how to fix their dated stores. TJX as a combination of stores is the sum of what Zayre was and still holds a huge chunk of the market, be it with smaller stores and some combo stores that rival a Zayre store in size. Marshalls, TJMaxx and HomeGoods including combos of the store group. Even shared advertising for the Holiday Season in December! ruclips.net/video/iS6YnaFCeeQ/видео.html Zayre TODAY ! 2020 version
Never heard of this company. East coast mainly?
Yup. It was limited to the Northeast
Actually we had them in Birmingham, AL. I got my ears pierced there.
It was big down here in Florida

@@TheNSTLKIAChannel sorry. No it wasn't. We had locations all the way to Louisiana and once had stores in Minnesota way more then just upper East coast. 392 locations to be exact
