Hey, I normally would never comment about safety issues, but I would like to share some personal experience. I spent my younger years handling petroleum products the way you do in the video, without gloves. I stupidly disregarded vapor warnings and used chemicals in poorly ventilated areas when it was to cold outside to work or open windows. Now I am 60 and for the last eleven years I have been suffering from chemical sensitivities that have disabled me, and severally limited my life. If I had to do all over again, I would take the time to wear appropriate gloves and a vapor mask if ventilation was limited, but as my mom used to always say "hind sight is 20/20. Thanks for the videos and sharing your own knowledge and experience.
@richardanderson Thanks for sharing your experience and advise and I know a lot of people do also. Of course there's always a dumbass in every bunch saying dumb ass shit. Got to ignore those types. I hope you can maintain your health as best you can throughout the years.
Your videos are the most informative hacks/tricks I've ever seen. You give real solutions for real problems. I look forward to watching them as soon as you post them. Thanks
We used that trick to shine tires on our vehicles before an inspection during my time in the Army. Worked every time. Nice that it works on paint too, that we never got a chance to try. No one wanted a shiny Jeep. :)
Ever since I saw your video about ATF, I use it a lot. Mostly for lubing things up. It is also great as a penetrating oil. Squirt it on rusty nuts and bolts and they come apart easily.
Love2boat92 Oh Yeah... I just put the black one up for sale and my phone started ringing 5 minutes later. Needless to say it is gone without even a haggle on the high price.
I've found that WD40 SPRAYED and on the unit and wiped on with a towel shines everything up and makes it look great damn near new, without using any paint. The only time I use paint Is if its an area that needs it where it wore off or where a little surface rust appeared but other wise WD40 gives it that show room shine.
sixtyfiveford Yea its temporary. But when you get your car washed its going to get dirty and have to get washed again. But it will be sold by the time that happens. Even when they buy them new in the store Its going to be dirty after the first cut. Its just a tactic to give it that showroom shine when they come look/buy it. A tactic to make it look that much better. I havent had any returns for lack of shine when first purchased. It just makes it easier then having to paint everything. But like I said if it needs paint then I give it some otherwise the wd shine works for me for the sale. Just saves extra work, but you like going above and beyond, thats a good thing for your customers it stays newer looking longer, thats good as well. Whetever the preference.
Spray painting , than using gas to clean up is common but the transmission fluid is something that I have not done I try and learn something new every day.that was it for me.i have off work today , ill be making the tractor look brand new lol thanks for the tips
I use baby oil,its pretty cheay at the dollar store and a quick wipe really helps keep things shiny. After a mowing, the body cleans right up and a quick wipe makes it look good again.
Baby oil and transmission fluid are both mineral oil. ATF has some red dye and a detergent, where baby oil is just mineral oil and perfume. Every-time I wipe down a piece or equipment, I'm amazed.
Good tips n tricks. I can't tell you how many pushmowers I have got for free because people threw them out broken. Usually can fix them up for under $15 and less than 30 minutes repair time and they run like new......then on to craiglist it goes...sold..... $cha ching$! Take care Sixty
Ozzstar Thanks Man. Yeah, both these are freebies that were delivered to me. I just listed the black one and it was gone in under 5 minutes. Even with a high price I got the comment " this looks so nice I won't even haggle on the price" from the guy. People want to spend their hard earned money on stuff that looks nice.
Wow! I watched the other video to,of you renewing a car finish. Good to rem, ember. Ive been flipping lots of equipment through the winter and I never thought of making it pretty for a few more bucks. Ive been buying non running stuff, fixing it and just selling it. I probably could have gotten more money if I prettied them up. Great tips!
BCtruck, rebuild, repair, repurpose Not just a little bit more. On numerous occasions I have bought equipment from other people who are flipping only to sell them the next day for a lot more. All because they presented it very badly.
Ah, the good 'ol back door overhaul! I'd expect that oil to grab dust like crazy. I actually put a quick coat of wax on my rider tractor to make it easy to hose off and stays cleaner.
A lot of quick detail spray waxes are oil based. Yes, it will attract a little dust but not really much more than having nothing on it. The transmission fluid is such a thin oil and has no tackiness to it.
That is very interesting, I will have to try that out. I have always used Rustoleum to paint stuff or do touchups, I will by the Krylon and give it a try. Thanks for the cool video.
Superiorpowerwash I used Rustoleum for years and still do in some colors. Rustoleum is stronger paint but takes longer to dry and doesn't like grease or oil. Krylon gloss black sticks to virtually everything and makes it look pretty.
I want to repaint my red craftsman snowblower. What paint do you recommend? do i need to prime and paint or is there a one step product etc. There is some oxidation forming already on some spots. its almost 20 years years old. Id like to spruce it up like new again.
I have repainted quite a few snowblowers. Oil based paints(Alkyd Enamels) are some of the best but take at least 24hrs to dry in 60F temperatures. Rustoleum is the most well known. Quick Dry paints like Krylon are still durable but dry to touch in under an hour and though may not be as good are still good.
Add a little Bondo work and you have revealed the ancient secrets of import machine and tool finishing. Does the ATF polish reduce wind drag and make them go faster? Off to get some Krylon Smurf Blue...
Good info. Question: I assume you wipe off the paint in the areas you did not want to paint while the paint is still WET? I wonder if I use ATF to paint the underside of our van to keep the rust at bay, I have been spraying it with WD-40 but that is expensive.
57WillysCJ I would say old motor oil is better than ATF or WD-40. You can just put it into a garden sprayer and spray it out. Or Chainsaw bar oil. It has tacking agents that allow it to stick, but you would have to brush it on as it is thicker. The paint can be dry to the touch or even be completely dry for days. Krylons short coming of not being gasoline resistant helps up here. So the gas dissolves it and allows you to wipe it away even if dry.
So I decided to paint the bucket of my 1971 Ariens 6hp I picked up over the summer for free. Little sanding, prime, used Duplicolor Chevy engine orange paint DE1620 if I remember right. Came out nice, but at one point I shot a nice blast at the white Tecumseh inadvertently and kind of forgot about it. The bucket, augers came out nice (it was rusty!) and I remembered this video. So a day after I was surprised the Duplicolor came off easily with gas soaked rag. Thanks again for the tips.
I just use used motor oil in place of your trans fluid idea. I also use the used motor oil for other things but it's not too environmentally friendly😎.
Im not buying a mower off you.... well they do look pretty.. ok then ha ha :-)) Ive used the oil trick for years, but not on mowers, it can work on black car bumpers/wheel arch trims, but it often dont last long. Ahh ive used petrol when nothing else works, the sticky label remains comes to mind, after trying white spirit or meths a rag dipped in petrol allways works :-D
zx8401ztv Yeah, I wouldn't buy a mower from me... I charge too much.. Petrol is one of the strongest solvents that won't wipe the writing off the decals.
sixtyfiveford ha ha dont even trust yourself, thats classic :D But if the mowers are mechanically fine (and i know they will be) then your doing no more than tarting them up for sale, like car dealerships do.
+rogerbeginify Only cheap ones sell in that range. The Honda and Toro's with features still go in the $500+ range. I won't touch bagless and non propelled mowers. I got top dollar for the ones in the video (200 for the Craftsman and 250 for the Toro).
+sixtyfiveford I picked up a 2yr old mint craftsman, bagger, rear wheel self prop, Honda engine mower last year that a customer gave to me for doing a tune up on his new machine, he left gas in the craftsman over the previous winter and when it would not start just bought another, I got it to the shop and flushed it, cleaned carb all that jazz but did not bother cleaning it up, and it was pretty dusty, put it up on Kijiji (Canadian CL), over about a week I had hardly any views and no interest, so one afternoon I took a rag off bench and started to wipe it down, the rag had some oil in it from cleaning up, I noticed after cleaning part of the deck that the oil really gave it a great finish, needless to say I went a little OCD lol and completely detailed the entire mower, engine and all! it looked like showroom floor ready! haha. took a few new pics, by that night I had about 6 offers at $300 no one even gave a lower offer, so now I do a good clean up (with an oily rag) of all equipment and it brings a lot more interest and quick sales. thanks for all your vids, I was stuck on a Toro S200 carb (finicky little...@#$&) lol and your vid helped big time!
I've thrown rattle can clear coat on equipment and it does work well. It just seams to flake/peel off after a short time or start turning yellow. Still I will throw it on obvious rusted equipment and it is astonishing how much better it looks.
How much more do you get for equipment as is, that does not look that bad? I just stopped cleaning mowers because people just don't want to pay that extra $5. Heck, I don't even give them a 1/2 qt of clean oil. (NO one even looks at the oil!!) I figure the smart people out there will change that oil on any used equipment. I used to go all out & care about them like they were mine, but just got tired of doing all the extra effort for no extra money.
I subscribe like & comment on your stuff as much as I can. Thanks for passing on all the tips & tricks. Your vids are great. Almost makes me want to put all my old stuff & some new stuff back up.
jim Smith I charge a premium for my stuff. People want to feel warm and fuzzy about buying anything and both these got the comments of "Wow that looks new" by both buyer. I treat it just like selling a car: it needs to look pretty first to get people to even look or come out, then it needs to run flawlessly to sell it. I got $280 for the early 90's Toro and $260 for the early 2000's Craftsman. Without spending the 5-10 minutes to polish it up I would have got $150-175 for the Toro and $150 for the Craftsman. I'll admit I rarely change the oil as well. I never see a piece of equipment come in that has a worn engine from old oil, I just top it off.
It’s a cool idea but I find it very deceitful, I bought a pathfinder with low mileage it looked immaculate the guy put WD-40 on the paint, after a couple Rain storms it all washed off and I got stuck with a car that had more scratches on it then 50 or 60 cars combined I was very pissed to say the least
sweetie Im concerned for your safety, you should be wearing gloves doing that, because your body is absorbing all those chemicals, you skin is alive and the largest organ of your body. tc

RUclips is sharing your older videos👍 I save old gas to use as solvent. Thane fir the videos

Dasdfjkl It's a great cheap do it all.
Oh yes, it defiantly makes a big difference when selling the equipment and ensures you get the best price.
Good vid.
Cheers

retrorestore Thanks Martin.
LOL! He gets the mowers looking brand new and then takes them out in the yard and lets them go only to wreck into a trailer LOL! Good video!
This is what I would call an "aerosol overhaul" lol. Great video!
Love2boat92 Oh Yeah... I just put the black one up for sale and my phone started ringing 5 minutes later. Needless to say it is gone without even a haggle on the high price.
sixtyfiveford Wow. Good for you. Ive always said if it looks good it sells good. I know that from experience.
With trucks we called this kind a diesel fuel wax job. Done THAT a bunch but not on mowers per se.
This video just popped up. Your front yard has changed so much.
This is an old one.

Genius!!!!
So you can do this if your trying to sell them, but what happens to the Transmission Fluid areas, do they get crazy dirty because its sticky now?
Juan Rempel It's not sticky. Unlike something like motor oil, Transmission fluid has no tacking agents and wipes off clean and dry.
sixtyfiveford Good to know, thanks, maybe I could use some of this on my quad. Shin it up for the videos.
I shine up quad plastics all the time.

tony macdonald Oh Yeah!
I just use used motor oil in place of your trans fluid idea. I also use the used motor oil for other things but it's not too environmentally friendly😎.
revitup1965 Nice.
Can you use regular car oil
It doesn't work well and attacks a lot of dust.
Great tricks!! I love Krylon...good stuff. And who knew about transmission fluid!! Wow! Can you use it on the tires?
shabbydeb Yeah, Krylon is my #1 go to.
sixtyfiveford Yeah, it does work on tires.

parts cleaner works as well. I learned that by accident.

It'll make a car finish look almost new.
would this work well on the black trim around the bottom of a car?
Ryan Spackman Yes it will.
