    Boy howdy!!! These are one of my toughest beasties!!! Like you said, opuntias and cereus spirals!!! My spirals I finally won the battle!! Used 70% rubbing alcohol over and over and scrubbing with a tooth brush!! Two opuntia have been a really long problem. I've tried over and over. Still they come back!! Going to try and work on them this spring and summer. May blast them off with a hard water spray with a hose nozzle. These beasties are always a constant battle with us plant people!!! Thanks for sharing this great method of eradication!!! From Morris Park in the Ozarks, to across the emerald isle, have a wonderful day!!! Peace, Love, Plants!!!✌️💖🌵🌷🌴🌸🌿🌻🍀🌾💐🌱🌹🌳😃👍

    I recently received an Opuntia through the post, it had the beginnings of scales.
    I zapped them off.
    Before this, i haven't seen scale for several years, I hope they stay gone.
    Enjoying your videos and its very helpful to watch these such topics because it reflects the realities we are all faced with when growing plants, and it's refreshing to see it shown through your videos.

    Such patience! Could you water in a systemic insecticide to stop scale (or other insects) returning? I used to do this for prevention many years ago, when as a teenager my bedroom often smelled of Murphy’s systemic 😮😂!!

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  7 месяцев назад

      Scales really are such a pain for us cactus growers, I used to use a really good systemic you watered into the soil years ago called Provado it worked so well for getting rid of scale, mealies but they changed the formula few years ago due to the banning of some insecticide ingredients like Melathion, the new ingredients don't seem to work as well for scale and mealies now, thanks so much Georgina for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Thursday today XXXX

    My experience is that neem oil kills crassula and portucaria afra...my preferred solution is 2 parts water and 1 part isopropyl alcohol and 4-5 drops of dishwashing liquid in a quart spray bottle. I don't use rubbing alcohol because it can have oils that can suffocate leaves.

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  7 месяцев назад +1

      Oh no with the Neem oil killing Crassula, I will be careful with avoiding the Crassulas and Portucaria afras when spraying the Neem this Spring, and thanks so much for letting me know your preferred method, thanks so much Dave for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a super Sunday today XXXX

    Hi Lynne,I’ve just discovered (hard) scale on my jungle cacti and I’m gutted.
    I have damaged some of the ‘leaves’ trying to scrape them off and they’ve also spread to other plants.
    I have ordered neem oil but am now considering rubbing alcohol after watching your video.What would you recommend for these more delicate plants of mine ? I have shark tooth fern and fish bone cacti.
    Any advice would be much appreciated.
    Lots of love and plant power being sent over to Northern Ireland xxx

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  7 месяцев назад

      Hi Jackie :-D so sorry you are dealing with these scale 'beasties' on your plants too, I notice my jungle cacti are especially prone to scale, I would use the rubbing alcohol first to remove as many of the scale as you possibly can, and then use the Neem oil afterwards to help to prevent them coming back, the Neem oil is really good to prevent them from returning as Neem effects the scales reproductive system and after a few treatments of Neem it seems to really work at eliminating the scales especially for all neighbouring plants too, but if you can use the rubbing alcohol first to remove as many of the scales this would be best, and then follow up with the Neem oil spraying, thanks so much Jackie for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a super Sunday today XXXX

    So I have a $65 euphorbia that is stabbed up but I checked and I don't believe it's the scale but it is climbing up every face of my euphorbia, is there anything I can do for that?

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  7 месяцев назад

      Hi Tom :-D I think it could be corking that is spreading up your Euphorbia, some larger and mature Euphorbias will often have this scabbing in patches going up Euphorbia stems, but its difficult to say for sure, if its natural scabbing there is nothing that can be done and its more of an aesthetic thing, but its best to get it checked out just in case it was a virus, if you are on FB you could post up some photos onto the FB groups e.g 'The Funky Cactus Growing Page' forum or the 'British Cactus & Succulent Society' group page they are open to everyone around the world, if you are on Instagram you can also DM me some photos and I can have a look and advise you too, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, and sending lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Tuesday XXXX
