I watched the legendary Bird played and I’m currently enjoying watching Luka play as well. I will tell you this though, back then it’s hard to look good and score consistently bc people would grab on to everything that’s attached to u. Example, I used to play in many pickup games in Brooklyn. On days that I faced non physical teams I would roast them but against physical teams I could barely get shots off and when I do they weren’t consistently falling. Based on this alone I’d picked Bird all day and everyday over Luka!
The ONLY difference between Luka and Larry is, and no one seems to bring this up, DEFENSE. Larry played during a time when NO BLOOD NO FOUL ... now i think Luka is a generational talent ... for the current generation, and he is benefitting from years of NBA executives, officials, and the like , CLEANING up the flagrant fouls and all around dirty play ... Larry Bird PLAYED THROUGH IT. If Larry Bird didn't have the problems with his back, the man could suit up today at 66 years old ... and average 60 !
HE ACTUALLY COULD, BUT,.. HE WOULDN'T WANT TO,.. & THAT'S THE CRAZY PART ABOUT HIM,.. HE LLLOOOVVVEEEDDD TO SHARE THE WEALTH, SO,.. I WOULD SAY 40/50 PT PER GAME!!!
Thank you groove. That’s exactly right about the defense difference. Today’s NBA is such a different league than when Larry played. In a league with no defense Ike today guys like Bird, Jordan, Magic would put up insane numbers! Today they can’t foul hard or they’re gone. Back when Larry played teams actually had players that were on the team to be enforcers meaning all they were there for was to get in fights. Teams used to brag about having the best enforcers.
Of course, as Luka is now getting amazing enough to merit some comparison to Bird, and Luka is dominating the league, we still have people who think Larry couldn’t play today.
When you bring up that Larry bird could play today because of guys like Luka, some people come with the argument that Luka is “waayyy more skilled than larrybird”. but I honestly don’t see it. Just looks at the similarities in skill in the highlights shown. Not to mention bird was a good defensive player and better than luka in that realm
Anyone who says Larry legend couldn't play in todays game should just be ignored as someone who doesn't know basketball. Luka is a generational talent ... for the current generation. Magic said it best ... "There will NEVER, EVER be another Larry Bird" ... no truer words spoken ...
It’s all work ethic! Luka is just another person who understands practice practice practice like Pistol who taught me I could be the best in any sport I played and I was. But didn’t have the height or size for professional sports I’m only5 ‘10” but led my football and basketball teams to dominance two championships in football after the team I played for didn’t win a game in two years. Basketball I won the Coca Cola dribble & shot beating every county to go to the Baltimore civic center and blowing out the guys in shooting but when my balll hit the stupid sign with a steel round base and lost 5-6 seconds but it was my fault because all I did was shoot being mesmerized playing on a pro court. Still took second but missed first & missing the finals and a flight to Atlanta. I took that work ethic and was making over 100k at 20.
Great uploads. Larry Legend is the GOAT. You should make videos on more NBA subjects too I'd sub to that channel. hilarious subversion at 5:50. I never considered that larry was a pioneer of the step back.
It is undeniable that he has the same style game. You need individual standouts in the context of being a team player to give the game another level of interest.
Man, this is a great video! Amazing footage comparing Luka and Larry, a few plays that looked identical between the two players. Thanks for the enjoyment!
Loved this video. The Celtics/Lakers/Pistons battles of the 1980s and 90s were just so awesome. It's great to bring back those memories. Great humor in this video, and amazing clips of Bird and Doncic looking like carbon copies of each other. Terrific!
I have just found that I like basketball because of a clip i saw of Luka, now I watch old stuff. So for me, he looks like Larry Bird's twin - love 'em both
That lunging 3-pointer he made reminded me of one Larry made off the same spot, and the fade to baseline shot was like the one Larry made vs Atlanta. I'm a Larry fan and I love it....
NOTHING SIMILAR. U R BLIND. LUKA BELOW AVERAGE SHOOTER. WORST DEFENDER. SOLID REBOUNDER. AND BODY LANGUAGE IS LAZY. NOT TO MENTION COMPLAIN EVERY CALL. BIRD IS OPPOSITE ALL THOSE THINGS. I BET U DONT KNOW SPORT AT ALL.
I’d like to preface this by saying that I played basketball in NYC in an all black high school and got my nick name from the brothers playing at The Cage and at Rucker Park. We were all trying to emulate what Larry bird was doing on the playground and it was impossible for us. However, I remember hearing what Pat Riley said, “If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save a game, I’d choose Michael Jordan, but if I had to choose a player to take a shot to save my life, I’d take Larry Bird."
Exactly this has to stop. Luka is an average shooter which is odd for his confidence level. Luka also lacks leadership and clutch and is a lazy defender. I don’t see it. Larry terrified the NBA because he had no weaknesses and could sense yours from a mile away. He played mostly outside-in and could dominate games from the perimeter, from the post, or without the ball as playmaker, disrupter, and facilitating the break. So like I said I don’t see it…
@@jubjubhenry5612you casuals are funny 😂 luka has more assists pr game compared to Larry the shoot around the same % Larry is a bit better. Luka is almost avrageing a triple double for his career with more point's pr game. Larry has a little lead in blocks. While luka has a little lead in steals. Larry is a much better freethrow shooter. So actually the two player's stats are really close with luka having more ppg. Bird having 2 more rebounds pr game and luka having 2 more assists pr game. Before talking to much make sure you know what you are talking about not what you heard some youtuber say. I bet non of you were even close to even being born when bird played
@@dalic24 ok first off Bird averaged almost 2 steals per game while Luca averages 1. 1.7 and 1.1. Bird is better from outside and 20% better from the free throw line in a tougher era. What does this mean? This means that in Birds era they would have hammered Luca like they did Shaq just to put him on the free throw line. That is something you can’t do in this era so points and assists come easier. Now throw in the fact that Luca puts up around 22 shots a game and Bird put up around 19 a game. Now you said something in here about knowing the game and what we are talking about. Understand that knowing isn’t always in black and white. As for Luca he’s as close to a Larry Bird as I’ve ever seen.
7:06 56 actually. But pretty close. Bird shot 61% from the floor (INCLUDING 3 pointers) that night. Racked up 32 of his 60 in a 14 minute period of the 2'nd half. THAT'S WILT 100 POINT GAME PACE at over 2 points a minute!
Please, I'm about to throw up. Larry Bird set the record for impact to team when drafted: 32 games they won only because of Bird. Doncic only gave the Mavs 9 games. 9 f'ing games. MJ at least gave the Bulls 11. Bird won his first title in his second year in the league. SECOND year in the greatest era of the NBA. It's considered the golden age. Luka is beating up on this era of NBA cos it sucks so bad. He's a poor man's Bird if you want to call it. Luka can never be Bird. NEVER. He's already lost the comparison. He studied and copied everything that Bird did. Like Kobe did with MJ. But Kobe is not MJ and Luka is not Bird.
Bird's 32-game impact is a lot easier to get when you're added to a much worse team. They are two different situations, you can't compare it. Bird had more time to prove himself, and arguably had better teammates as well. They are two different situations, you can't compare it. Do I think Luka is like Larry? Yes. Do I think Luka is better than Larry? No. But this video shouldn't make you want to hurl, it should excite you for the future. Because if Luka does well playing like Larry, others will emulate him too. We might see a lot more ball like Larry Legend played, being played again. And that alone is exciting to me, and I will be watching Luka even closer than before.
@@JW-qd3ol The first year, Bird increased the wins by 32 without Parrish or McHale or DJ, etc. You don't have to compare Doncic's 5 years to Bird's 13 years. You can take the first 5 years of both and Larry was very injured the last 4 years of his career - so these next 4 years will show. Will he get the MVP's and championships? Will he improve in defense and be the clutch one with 2 seconds left in the finals. We know that Bird by the end was injured and was still able to win while guarded by Jordan and Pippen and Barkley and his hustle and overcoming injury are 2 parts of his equation. Doncic will cream him in scoring in these 3-point years but so often, he looks like he is intentionally copying Bird and I want to see what moves he invents over the years.
Luka looks like he studied Larry Bird and copied a whole lot of his moves. His highlight reel is almost too copycat in someways. But if you are going to copy, Larry Bird is a fun one to copy.
Luka is good, but needed overtime to get some of the numbers where Bird did it in regulation. This is no slight on Luka. We need to compare same time criteria. How many points would Bird have had if his game had gone into overtime?
Almost had me with the Larry and Luca comparison, but to say that Larry should take it as a compliment for Luka being compared to him...well I don't but that sounds about as disrepectful as anyone could ever say. Now there's a saying that goes "if the game is on the line, you give the ball to Michael. But if you're life is on the line, give the ball to Larry" I dont believe they're gonna change that name on the last line anytime soon or ever
Watching anyone doing anything that good makes it magic time. Seeing the perfection the unbelievable imagination the eyes in the back of head plays the ease of the play. It must be fun to be him.
It seems to me the only differences are the left-handed game, the fact that Bird did it out of boredom, and the toughness of the league in the 80's. Also, the trash talking of Larry was several notches above Luka. But, hey, he's getting there!
I am not a fan of the modern NBA, so this video is particularly enjoyable. The man is a beautiful basketball player. I had heard his name, but frankly I've never seen him play. Thank you for the video.
These are hand-picked highlights. If you watch an entire Mavs game you wouldn't call it beautiful. Luka's a great player, but iso-ball is a brutal watch for an entire game. Destroys the "beautiful" game of basketball--akin to what the Pistons and the Knicks did turning the game into mud-wrestling in the late '80's/ early 90's
My biggest criticism was Luka is more smiles than Larry, Larry is so much more serious, and then i seen Larry smile at the end, i forget that he also played with alot of joy
You asked in this video if it's too early to compare Luka to Larry Bird and as someone who grew up in Boston (Roslindale) and is probably protective and partial towards its past greats in Boston sports, I would say no it's not too early to compare Luka to Larry Bird but whether Luka will end up with the same numbers and achievements is yet to be seen. I have been watching a lot of his highlights and following him a little bit and it is exciting and impressive to watch.
I could listen to you read the phone book. Great voice and pace. Love these Larry Legend accounts. I'd say stories but that implies they might not be true. Larry was the real deal in every respect. Thanks for a great video. Liked, subbed and rang that bell.
I love the narrator . Great voice and cadence . Sad to see the Mavericks fold down the stretch this year and miss the playoffs . One guy can't do it all
Can't deny Luka is pretty freaking amazing... but Bird is probably the best all around player to ever lace up. Luka is the closest thing to Bird, but he has an awful lot of work to do to catch Bird and he knows that. I agree with Jefferson @ 14:08.
Here is the thing that many are overlooking. Luka is playing in comparison to Larry Bird, and many get mad. However, Luka is doing and was doing those plays since he was in Europe, and now he has improved by far more than Bird at his age of 24.
The elephant in the room, the real reason these players are compared to each other, the topic I was trying to avoid...the step back jumper. 😂 perfect misdirection!
I admit, I see Luka has "copied" much of Larry's play style, particularly shooting & passing. However, Larry's play style is multi-faceted. So many facets, I can't even attempt to begin to list them all. Before we even begin comparing Luka to the Legend, can we at least wait for Luka to win a championship? An MVP? Luka is talented & I see similarities. But it's unfair to Luka to even make such a comparison so early in his career.
That was the coolest basketball video I have ever watched and I'm 45yrs old and I've watched a shit load of basketball videos !!!! Seriously awesome stuff bro for real!!!! Luka and Larry are both basketball wizards !!!! Court IQ of the charts probably 2 of the highest ever !!!!
As a real Larry Bird Fan as well as luka being my Favorite player in the nba right now, I’ve been saying he’s this generation ma Larry YET LUKA IS ONLY 23!!! Luka has at least 8 more years to master his craft before being considered in his prime!!! It will be a scary time then!!!!
Good comparison. I do think Larry had tougher competition, but that's not Luka's fault. Also, Luka benefits from having seen Larry play and being able to learn from it. Bird invented some things that Luka learned how to do. Still takes a great player to be able to do it at all. Luka's comeback game when they were down 9 with 33 seconds left reminds me of Reggie Miller in the 80s. Maybe you could do a comparison of those two games.
The player who got me interested in watching basketball again was Jokic, for his great hands and creative play. And then Luka came along, who indeed reminds me of Bird.
Yeah some of what he does reminds me of Bird, and if he played with a better cast he'd be more like Bird, but man! that iso-ball is so boring! Bird never played like that! And Doncic has become such a whiner!
Yeah, the whining is SO un-Bird-like. As for iso, it is a function of the times, with all of the shooting options on the floor stretching the defense. I wouldn't mind so much if refs were not so forgiving of travelling and carrying, it is quite ridiculous. Luka exploits it, but if that's how the game is called you would be a fool not to (Larry definitely would, he was one of the sharpest minds in the game.) Considering the way the game is played now, not only should they go back to calling travels and carries, they should allow more contact and call offensive fouls the way did in the old, old days. You are an absolute sitting duck on iso defense nowadays.
Slow clap. Well done video. One caveat is the NBA was a much rougher place in Larry days. Esp in the eastern conference. Sure, Luka was definitely mentally tough enough to have handled it and not missed a beat (Unlike most of the great modern players), so my point is, Larry would have put up much crazier numbers in today's game than in his era.
Larry Bird was head and shoulders above Doncic. It's an insult to put them in the same sentence!!! Larry was a better passer, better free throw shooter, better rebounder, better hustler, much more clever than Doncic would ever be, much greater leader, much better trash talker, with much more confidence and bravado... That doesn't take anything from Doncic, he is a top player, but not even close to Larry. Larry got a Celtics team that had a losing record and made them win 60 games the next season. Then Larry got his first ring the season after that. Larry was 3 consecutive times MVP. And Larry did all that in an era that within the paint it was more MMA than basketball...the amount of pushing, grabbing, throwing, elbowing, etc was unbelievable.

Luka is very similar to Bird. Imagine if Bird wasn’t a team first player. How many more points could he have scored? I dare to say that he could have been a top 5 scorer Of all time. He helped his teammates out. Also, imagine if Larry Bird hadn’t mangled his finger playing either baseball or softball. He had no finger in a finger of his shooting hand. Amazing
Jordan and Kobe both had the killer instinct. Win at all cost. Kobe played against LeBron in all star game. Kobe blocked LeBron. Then Kobe blocked LeBron again. Then the next time LeBron had the ball;he was elbowing Kobe and using his offhand to create space. Kobe still blocked his shot, but Kobe was called for the foul. So this talk about LeBron being better than Kobe is rubbish. LeBron has played in more games. Longevity doesn’t equal better. I believe Celtics were close to the worst team in nba. Then Bird arrived. Two years later the Celtics won it all
Great video. I find it interesting that people can listen to guys who actually played in the NBA talk glowingly about LD, but still discount his game due to no "D in NBA". All we heard when drafted was "he'll never do that against NBA defenders". Which is it?
Bird made the All NBA 2nd team 3 times and defense was the worst part of his game. Bird’s anticipation and intangibles were off the charts. He was a double digit rebound and shot the 3 at a higher % than Luka-during his best years, and he would’ve shot it at a much higher% had they shot it more back then. All you have to do is look at the % he shot it at the three years he won the 3 pt contest: 1986 76.7%; 1987 53.3%; 1988 56.7%. Lastly, he got a lot of assists despite having few touches. He was a phenomenal passer and playmaker.

That falling down 3 pt winner against Memphos at 16:15 is almost an exact copy of Bird against Phoenix in the playoffs. From the same exact spot on the floor except that Bird was set with his foot across the 3 pt line so that he had to pick it up and then shoot falling down. Luka has IT..... whatever that is.... he has it.
i dont remember larry crying to the officials on every other play
I watched the legendary Bird played and I’m currently enjoying watching Luka play as well. I will tell you this though, back then it’s hard to look good and score consistently bc people would grab on to everything that’s attached to u. Example, I used to play in many pickup games in Brooklyn. On days that I faced non physical teams I would roast them but against physical teams I could barely get shots off and when I do they weren’t consistently falling. Based on this alone I’d picked Bird all day and everyday over Luka!
*Agreed!*
I respect that analogy.
but in terms of skills, luka is far agead maboi
@@angiewilliams8472 yep, having your whole team participate was half the fun. (wealth)
@@dylan4652 TRUE,.. INDEED!!!
@@angiewilliams8472 No ... Wilt already averaged 50 for a season ... Larry would average 60 to show what a joke the game is now.
Larry was a great defender too.
Help defender. One on one not so much.
@@Amick44 ...........You under rate Bird''s defensive skills. He made NBA All Defensive Second Team for three different seasons.
It is undeniable that he has the same style game.
You need individual standouts in the context of being a team player to give the game another level of interest.
Man, this is a great video! Amazing footage comparing Luka and Larry, a few plays that looked identical between the two players. Thanks for the enjoyment!
The thing that I remember the most about Larry Bird is that he could be up by 25 points in the 4th quarter and still shouting threes.
Loved this video. The Celtics/Lakers/Pistons battles of the 1980s and 90s were just so awesome. It's great to bring back those memories. Great humor in this video, and amazing clips of Bird and Doncic looking like carbon copies of each other. Terrific!
When Bird played you weren't allowed to travel, just saying
Don’t forget they had real defense when Larry played not like this powderpuff game
and when they were, they had to go commercial.
Doncic knows what is playing on a basketball style like that, it's called fiba basketball
if you aint got crounty take it on the go..peace to yo mother
Softness wasn’t seen in the nba, to myself only thing worth turning on is TNT Sir Charles, Shaquille and crew best tv to date.
It's uncanny how similar they are. As a big time Larry fan, it's an absolute pleasure watching Luka ball.
Agree. Luka is great too.
Nikola jokic Larry ( broken back ) plus three three inches ;; &no broken back
NOTHING SIMILAR. U R BLIND. LUKA BELOW AVERAGE SHOOTER. WORST DEFENDER. SOLID REBOUNDER. AND BODY LANGUAGE IS LAZY. NOT TO MENTION COMPLAIN EVERY CALL. BIRD IS OPPOSITE ALL THOSE THINGS. I BET U DONT KNOW SPORT AT ALL.
Bird over EVERYONE!
I’m waiting for Jokic to finish his career before I decide
Damn right he is
Amazing. Excellent job putting this together.
“Which one of you MF’s is finishing 2nd?” Larry
He was a BADDDD MAN
I’d like to preface this by saying that I played basketball in NYC in an all black high school and got my nick name from the brothers playing at The Cage and at Rucker Park.
I commend you on the quality of your videos. This one in particular, where you wove Luka videos into Bird videos. Nicely done!
Thanks - I don't watch basketball, but these videos on Lary Bird and Luka Doncic are fun to watch!
Luka is amazing, but he still needs to shoot better, pass better, rebound better and defend better to be at Bird’s level.
So like I said I don’t see it…
@@jubjubhenry5612 people forget or just don’t know
@@jubjubhenry5612you casuals are funny 😂 luka has more assists pr game compared to Larry the shoot around the same % Larry is a bit better.
So basically he has to play better.
If they counted blocks, Wilt would have a hundred 60-20-10s.
HAHAHA
Luka needs to do that for 8 yrs then
7:06
56 actually.
Yeah, I feel the same way. He studied the heck out of Larry Bird. But if it was music, it would be "Ice Ice Baby"
Larry Bird would put up 60ppg in today's nba
I've watched a lot of "highlights" videos, and this is one of the best I've ever seen. Thanks for posting it.
Great video… you sound like a young man so it’s very heart warming to me to hear you respect the OG’s
Accurate comparison. Both are great players. Fun to watch.
Thank you for making this great video together. You did an amazing job from A to Z. Im glad I found a new channel to subscribe Tom
5 minutes in.. 👏👏👏 bravo. Best Larry Legend vs Luka Legend video.
He has studied a million hours of Larry Bird he's not playing that way by accident
i watch alot of mma, i should be a black belt by now
@@amirkazemi2517lol study and practice.
ALT RT you just nailed comment of the year .!!
He studied Larry Bird but he plays more like Oscar Robertson.
He is to young to watch Larry. He watched and admired Lebron. Maybe also Harden but he wouldn't admit. :)
I am not a fan of the modern NBA, so this video is particularly enjoyable. The man is a beautiful basketball player. I had heard his name, but frankly I've never seen him play. Thank you for the video.
Same here.
You got me - the step back jumpshot. Love it. Great vid as always. Appreciate you.
Awesome video!!!!!!! Love Larry love lucka, lucky to have witnessed them both!!!!!
Subscribed! Thank you. Enjoyed the back to back comparison footage. Very neat indeed.
My biggest criticism was Luka is more smiles than Larry, Larry is so much more serious, and then i seen Larry smile at the end, i forget that he also played with alot of joy
Great video. You comparison cuts were 🔥. Your commentary was top notch. "...the stepback..." ☠
This is a great channel. Cool reliving all these old Bird memories.
The step back shot. Lol That was smooth man.
Great video. Thamks for all the vids.
Tremendous video! The A/B shots are unbelievable.
Great video! Loved every minute!
Great player! Love Larry, my favorite of all time. Luka is great and hope he continues his success.
Top-drawer production. Great stuff! 👍🇬🇧
I agree with Jefferson @ 14:08.
lol the stepback j. I love it. Great video man.
EXTREMELY well done!!! "Thumbs up" all the way!!!
Keep this up young man! You have excellent narrative skills. Keep it up..
Imagine Bird and Luca on the same team,
Ok, that was brilliant..."The step back jump shot", LOL well played sir!
What I would say, is how long did he study bird before going into the nba.
Holy crap! The similarities between those plays is scary. Awesome research guys!
Wow, aside from being a great video overall, that is some SPECTACULAR editing.
Great video, great montage. Subscribed.
Let's not lie Luka gonna be on hsi way outta the league in 8 years time with his body rn
Excellent video, really well done.
LARRY "LEGEND" BIRD
ALL DAY LONG
Good comparison.
Well done. Wonderful video.
Love your videos so much
For me it's sufficient to say that Doncic reminds us of Bird. That's pretty cool, fun and exciting to watch him play.
Good video, creepy voice over. Loved the step back jump shot bit
Great. Video! Liked and subbed
Amazing video. Subscribed.
I hope the Mavs are giving you some sponsorship, because you deserve it. I will be checking out Mavs games now.

Bird literally invented the step back jumper
Luka is very similar to Bird. Imagine if Bird wasn’t a team first player. How many more points could he have scored? I dare to say that he could have been a top 5 scorer Of all time. He helped his teammates out. Also, imagine if Larry Bird hadn’t mangled his finger playing either baseball or softball. He had no finger in a finger of his shooting hand. Amazing
He single handedly put Parrish and McHale in the Hall
Jordan and Bird are the greatest talents and competitors. Imagine what they’d do in this watered down, rigged league
You put a great video here. I wasn't so aware of his presence
WOW! Excellent video!
Yes! Luca is THE MAN in today's ball!
I have watched basketball since the 60's, with my Dad being a basketball fan, & Larry Bird was always our ultimate favorite player, and could never find another player that came even close.........that is until Luca. I would still take Bird over Luca any day, and Luca has a way to go, to reach the Bird stratosphere, but there is definite similarities.......great video!!!
Great videos!
Larry Bird is my hero. I've watched some March Madness but I couldn't watch NBA after Bird retired. It just wasn't the same. This is the first time I've seen this young man play. I couldn't wait to see what he would do next. There will never be another Larry Bird but I see someone that's going to be damn close. Somebody spent a lot of time studying videos. Smart guy.
That falling down 3 pt winner against Memphos at 16:15 is almost an exact copy of Bird against Phoenix in the playoffs. From the same exact spot on the floor except that Bird was set with his foot across the 3 pt line so that he had to pick it up and then shoot falling down. I haven't been able to find a clip of that one but I sure do remember it!
AMAZING VIDEO!!!👍👍👍
NEVER will be as good as Bird
