Tape House Drills: CQB Drills You Can Do Anywhere

- This video describes 5 ways to address a center fed door. To really get something from this video, you need to pay attention, and you need to have watched some of our other previous videos in the Intro to CQB playlist.
Things this video doesn’t show specifically: hallway considerations, flashbang use, cross coverage, dead space, adjacent space, white light/low light, moving to search a downed target, 3rd/4th man considerations, linkups, multicell clearance…. and about a hundred other important things that just aren’t within the scope of what’s being discussed.
Limitations of this type of training: it’s a paper target guys. It can’t move. It can’t react. There’s no walls, we can see the target prior to movement. That’s fine, this is a micro drill working a few skills, not a scenario.
Drills that work specific skills are very useful. In these drills we are putting a lot of fundamental skillsets together. Footwork, body posturing, non verbal signaling, processing, shooting while moving, and more. Scenarios or “Exercises” address larger scope training such as a full real shoothouse with live role players and non lethal training munitions, allowing for the opponents to shoot back, human error in movement and reaction time, surprise of the target or of the team via unexpected movement, distraction devices, etc etc.
So please understand these drills are just the live fire reps of drills that should be done dry and with non lethal ammo (sims, airsoft, etc) many many times before doing it live. Don’t do this without supervision and don’t do it with people you don’t know/trust.

While in the Marine Corps, 20 years ago, I was in an infantry company and we were taught CQB from a former Recon Marine. When we were in Fallujah, our tactics were adjusted on the fly and we ended up coming up with our own, rudimentary, ways to clear a room/building, which often included frags, JDAMs, or an AT-4.
These are lessons which were tightly held by cool guys and rarely shared among us knuckle-draggers. I love seeing a much more refined product available to the masses for education and application.

Dirty civilian here, I've never heard anyone who's been downrange speak about room entry like this before. But I figured that's what you would do during a Saint-Lô/Aachen/Hue situation. High intensity conflict = high intensity tactics. If you have to enter, frag the room, spray it with the SAW or automatic rifle, do your SLLS, if enemy still occupies the room, rinse and repeat until desired outcome is reached. Room entry tactics that were taught in this video are for that moment when it's time to take the room.

I like crossing first and opening the gate for the second man. We have trained the same side entry but I don't like the buttonhook. The foot work always gets me.

Great discussion, and nice flow of movement. There are a few things I would mention however. As you pointed out structure clearing is VERY dangerous, and there are many variables to consider. In my opinion, and based on my experience there are two schools of thought on this. One is the military process in which you have to ask the question, "Do we need to clear the structure"? Is it our primary mission objective, or are we clearing enroute? Where as for LEO it tends to be the main objective.
This is important because if it is not your main objective why take the risk? MOUT, military operations in urban terrain are a pucker factor of ten as it is, and your best friend is good intel on the area or structure you intend to clear. If you are going in blind it gets even more challenging.
Two things I have almost never heard covered is; doors and furniture. Do the doors open in or out, which side is the preferred entry, from strong side or weak side. A dynamic entry on an empty room is one thing, add a door that does not open all the way and a room full of furniture (Cover/concealment) changes the game considerably. Often times the SOP gets augmented or changed completely based on real time events. At the squad level repetition is mandatory, I have had squad/team members trip each other in the doorway, or been so focused on getting to their corner that they mis threats within the room.
As you said there is no, one way fits every situation in CQB. Team/Squad safety is paramount and must be the first concern.

I used to be the MOUT instructor for my company during Sgts time training (about 15 years ago now) I did the engineer tape shoot houses and I'd tape different colored pieces of construction paper to the side of a building in the motor pool for my "super high speed urban movement course"
I like this video because it compiles all of the theories together. It's funny because I don't have cqb experience except for some very rudimentary concepts, but on my own I've thought of some of these concepts just while sitting on the shitter and it's cool to see that somebody already developed them lol.

Have you seen anyone push into the unknown section of a room (see 13:40 discussion) based on the dominant hand? If right handed, it's normal to want to move to the right side, and vis versa. If so, any thoughts on breaking that habit?
And definitely at 37:00 make sure you do this with people you trust, and even then, do it AFTER you've walked through the thing with pew-pew hands.

@oriontraininggroupllc2782 how similar would you say your cqb curriculum is to jon dufresne? I took his nvg/cqb last weekend. Im guessing youre fairly close.
@@adamdyment9732Duffy has come to some CQB stuff but not our NVG stuff. That being said, the NVG program is the same just with the necessary added technical info and lighting considerations. Our visible conditions CQB programs are very similar, so I imagine the NVG is too, but I can’t say that 100% since he hasn’t been to ours and Vice versa

As to the question about engaging the target in the middle of the room and then, do you enter or not? I would say that depends on the kind of walls that you're dealing with. Sure, overseas you're going to deal with sturdier walls that actually provide cover for most small calibers. The problem is that if you engage the target in the center of the room and you DON'T enter, and those walls are only concealment and not cover, you're inviting them to simply start spraying at you through the walls because you've already set the terms of the engagement dynamic by losing the element of surprise when you engaged. As with all things CQC the answer always is "it depends". If you have thick solid walls, sure, keep working from the outside. If walls are basically paper like in the US, you'd better get your ass in there and do work because your odds of survival start dropping every second they know you're there and you don't plug them.
Edit I also want to add that again, "it depends" on whether or not you have reason to believe they will be expecting you. The center room target is great in my opinion, because it is often not covered or mentioned much by people teaching CQC. I even noticed former DEVGRU and CAG who seem to just ignore the center as if it doesn't exist. That flies in the face of years of experience that targets who aren't expecting you are likely to be somewhere near the center of the room. If you've already lost the element of surprise and they are barricading or preparing for your assault, then they are more likely to be in the corners. Center-fed rooms with targets in both corners are basically your worst-case scenario, because that means they know you're coming and the cut is what's going to F you. I have a completely different type of technique for dealing with this situation personally. So, if you have element of surprise, your center is priority. If you lost the element of surprise, check center but understand corners are likely your biggest threat priority.

This was a fantastic video, very easy to understand. I was relatively familiar before but this definitely added to my knowledge. Speaking as other situations like a tight hallway or some obstruction. Would being lefty be a benefit to have as a first or second man depending on the situation?
In the real world you won’t be able to game it like that. Be proficient moving left or right, as a left or right handed person.

Dude, the Running the Rabbit Video was very well done, and it reinforced the Path of Least Resistance! BUT I think you may have out run your headlights on this one. First, what's the context of the mission? Straight Raid, Hostage Rescue, Personnel Recovery, Intelligence Collection, etc.? That alone could smash "limit penetration" to pieces, since scared people hide EVERYWHERE! Second, you doctrine is sound, until you encounter a closed/locked door, or a poorly lit room; now you can't see... That is obviously going to delay the speed and process of entry. Above ALL, Keep it Simple Dude! There is nothing sexy about complexity. Context is King: First, what's the mission? Upon Entry, clear room to room, floor to floor, building to building. Corner-Fed, Center-Fed, Hot/Strong Wall, Closed vs Open Doors.

You all are clearly the experts so I am by no means second guessing your wisdom but I’m confused why we would ever transition an immediate lethal threat to the two man (after shooting only 2-3 rds) assuming that threat is actively attempting to fire back. Shouldn’t you prioritize hitting the enemy’s off button before continuing to a different sector of work?
I assume you're talking about the intial shots, you don't ever want to stand in the door way, and once you're behind cover (ie behind the wall) you're fighting a losing battle peaking it again with the same target. The 2 man engaging him further is to ideally hit him while hes waiting for the 1 man to pop out of cover. As well, if the target inside is a trained fighter or has common sense and he just got shot at by a guy moving from the TARGET'S right to left, the target will want to move left to avoid giving his aggressor an angle on him without the aggressor needing to move cover, as when you are shot at you will naturally want to move.

If the target does move left, he is now in the in cover angle of the 2 man. If he moves right, he is in the in cover angle of the 1 man.

Who is covering long hallway threat in a standard 36in wide hallway?
Whoever has a lane. That’s generally the point man until a door is being taken, and then it becomes whomever is next up after the entry is done and that lane has opened up.
@@oriontraininggroupllc2782 say your doing a 3 man movement and 2 guys will go into the room in a standard 36in wide hallway. Number 1 guy owns the long hallway threat and then starts pieing his door. Is he leaving his back exposed to the long hallway threat and then entering the room with the #2 guy? And #3 is taking the hallway after 1&2 flow into the room?
Love to see you guys do a video on moving in hallways and different techniques. Training and videos are too often done in commercial size hallways and aren’t realistic to what LEO’s are typically searching in my opinion.
