This is a song we got to hear as a child, it will never leave your brain.. Everytime you hear Flappie, or when its Christmas, the song has to be acknowledged.
These reactions are hilarious if you're Dutch. Literally every Dutchman knows this song. Every Dutchman knows how it's going to end. Seeing these RUclipsrs clueless about the how and why till the twists is just hilarious. This song is also realistic. Till way after the second world war it was very common for families to keep an animal (like a pig or indeed a rabbit) just for the meat. Flappie basically happened to my mother. Though not at Christmas. And no, that's not how I lost that grandfather.
For sure it is hilarious to see them clueless on how this is gonna end🤣. Really much love for them to take there time and put efford in this to make those videos!! But I hope that's not the way you grandfather dieth. Really sorry for your mother! It does really much pain to lose a animal and for sure on that way!!

Dutch stand-up comedy is different. It's closer to theater and an art-form. It's way more abstract, poetic but also gut-wrenching than American comedy. Not neccesarily better in general. There's a lot of comedians who just end up being pretentious about it, and even the top comedians are hit and miss. But yeah, when it gets good, it gets good. Hans Teeuwen did a show in English, the dude is his own sub-genre of Dutch comedy as he's going real deep in absurdism, a lot of his jokes aren't supposed to make much are incredibly meta.

Flappie is a cute name for a rabbit. It flaps with it's ears when it moves around. It's indeed a name for a pet not for a main course^^. Do remember this is 1961 (60 years ago), it was a lot more common to keep animals for meat back then in the Netherlands (many would have seen what they did it in the song as cruel to the child, even back then). Nowadays I only know a few farmers that kill a chicken once in a while or bring a pig to the slaughter house. It's not something you see often anymore in the Netherlands.

Having rabbit for dinner every year at Christmas in the Netherlands, is similar to Americans having turkey at the thanksgiving meal, it's that prevalent in both societies. For us, the meal started of with goulash soup, followed with small cooked potatoes with vegetables and gravy, and the rabbit was pretty much in the gravy itself, and the meal often ended with some ice-cream and whipped cream. Everything was self made though, and my mom always spent several days in the kitchen preparing everything, and it was always very tasty. But it eventually kinda started to irk me a little bit, having that same meal every year. Later on we switched around a bit more with Christmas dinners, though.
A hopefully forgotten habit feeding your family's pet rabbit which was rather common back in the 20th century up to 1980 btw a traditional Christmas dish is a rabbit unlike a turkey
Yeah, the big problem in this story isn’t eating the rabbit for Christmas - but letting your young kid think that it’s his pet first is borderline abusive, let alone letting them find out only when the roast is served. That’s gonna fuck you up, man.

Flappie could be best translated as Floppy,.. as in floppy bunny ears.
Het was kerstochtend 1961
Ik weet het nog zo goed
Mijn konijnenhok was leeg
here you go
That moment, when you realize why dad is gone....... I am dying.....😂😂😂
