The jungle themed area was called Nikki’s Party Palace. It had bounce houses and jungle gym type things. Held “open bounce” and kids birthday parties! It’s actually still in business, just relocated once the mall closed! This was an awesome video! Miss Great Northern, spent a lot of time here as a child and teen.

I miss my mall days in the late 1980s! Plenty of fun times were had back then. Really sad to see these places disappear. 😢

Yep, me too! Big Malls were EVERYWHERE!
We would get dropped off @ the local mall around 11am in time to eat lunch then catch a Matinee Showing of à movie, sometimes more than 1 in a Saturday. That was back when it cost $2 to $2.50 per person Before 4pm.
We would generally spend All afternoon with Another Parent picking us up (Our Parents would take turns dropping off & picking up duties until we reached Driving Age).
As we got older and started working in High School we spent our Non School & Work hours @ the Mall, shopping. I loved shopping for Special Outfits, Dresses, Shoes, Accessories, Makeup and we Always hit the local Fragrance Store Bath & Body Works & Victoria Secret (As we got to our Junior & Senior Years) Particularly for Homecoming, Prom & Senior Activities.
Occasionally, we'd catch a Friday Night Dinner & Movie when there weren't any School Activities like Basketball & Football Games Or Dances going on.
You were talking about Colognes & Perfumes & The Niche Stores... Hollister, Networks (A store targeting Trends in Teens & Young Women), Abercrombie & Fitch, Arepostle, Hot Topic, Wave Stores, Cato's Stores which seem to be popular in the South, were huge in our Area (Outside of Dallas, Texas). I worked for about 6 months at a mall in Irving, Texas before going Back to Work at Six Flags Over Texas. I worked at 2 stores, Networks Boutique and Wicks & Sticks (Candle Shop). I didn't like working in the Clothing Store because we had to wear the Clothes that we sold in the store & they only offered a 15% Employee Discount which when you Had to buy an Outfit per Paycheck Most of your Check was gone. I really didn't even like the clothes that much. I loved Working at the Candle Shop, but they only offered 4 hours a day @ Minimum Wage.
So, I went back to the Amusement Park job I held my Sophomore & Junior Year. I was able to go back to my old Dept & Section, Water Rides and within 30 Days I was a Ride Foreman. I Worked as many hours as I wanted and I pretty lived there open to close hanging out in the Massive Employee Back Area that had a Huge Pool, Poolside Grill & Snack bar, Company Store (Where we got our Work Shoes. Each year a Different Athletic Shoe Company Sponsored the Different Depts like Sketchers, KSwiss, Adidas and Nike. We paid out the cost out of our Checks. We could buy other things too like Swimsuits, Sunglasses, Sunscreen & Tanning Oil, Hats for the pool, Jewelry Etc. And I Still made more money than I had working 2 Jobs.
Plus, of Course for the Cowboys & Cowgirls you had the Stand Alone Calendars, Shepplers and Justin Boot Outlet Stores Or you could hit The Famous Ft Worth Stockyards where there were Streets full of Specialty Western Wear, Boots, Hats, Belts, Buckles, Western Jewelry, Niche Fragrances, Etc. This is where your Rodeo Cowboys & Cowgirls, Rodeo Queens, "Buckle Bunnies", and The Ranchers, Ranch Hands Etc got their clothes, Boots, Hats and Gear like Saddles & Ropes.

I love watching mall videos and guessing what stores used to be. I knew by the stained glass storefront it was Zumies, an alternative/underground type clothing store. Some of the writing on the wall were likely employees lol

The one store with the glass was a Zumiez and the walled off store with the green and white could have been a Sears. The medical machine in the raunchy part of the mall is called a sit to stand.

I remember frequenting that place. I lived near the area where that mall was. I was born in the early 2000s so basically there were little to no closed stores. when I visited during when it was holding up it had a Ruby Tuesdays, Spencer's, FYE, Game Stop, a frozen yogurt and pretzel place a Namco arcade called “Time Out” and a piano store. The entrance you came through was the piano store and before it closed it was converted to a sneaker store. I have had good memories of visiting there. My first 2 movies I watched there. I invited my cousin there and we played at the arcade. Hell I even got many items from the mall. Rest in peace Great Northern Mall.

23:23 I absolutely love these cinematic shots that slowly and steadily drift along for you to take in how static the entire environment of the mall really is. And when its combined with the music, it gives the mall an extremely sinister vibe as if there's something bad that's about to happen. This is some great filming work dude, this sequence literally feels like a scene from a movie.

I wholeheartedly disagree that online shopping killed the malls. The real cause is, like you said, changing demographics, increased crime, etc.. But the two biggest reasons are
    1. The decimation of our once great middle class. Average Americans no longer have the disposable income they once had.
    2. Because of all the businesses that congregated around the malls it caused extreme congestion on the main access roads to the malls. This made getting to the malls a pain in the arse and people opted for more conveniently located big box stores such as Walmart and Target. But, the problem with Walmart and Target is they sell mostly cheap crap. So, if you don’t want to take forever getting stuck in traffic getting to a mall and you don’t want to buy the cheap garbage that Walmart and Target sell then you have to go online. People don’t shop online because they want to. They shop online because they have to. Most everyone would like to get what they want today, and if they could make a quick, easy drive to get it they would. But most of the time that option isn’t available. That’s why people buy stuff online. If malls were quick and easy to get to and had what people needed not as many of them would be dead.

It's a good thing that the malls in Las Vegas, doesn't have any issues in staying afloat.
Sunset Galleria still has averages a decent foot traffic.
    (Services the Henderson County)
Fashion Show Mall is still bustling, especially during peak operation hours.
    (Services the Las Vegas Strip)
The Boulevard Mall, just like Sunset Galleria, averages a decent amount of foot traffic.
    (Services Central East Las Vegas)
Meadows Mall is still alive, despite that it is pulling less than decent foot traffic on a daily basis, but still in operation.
    (Services Central West Las Vegas)
Las Vegas Premium Outlet is always jam-packed with Tourists and Locals on a daily basis.
    (Services South Las Vegas)
The District at Summerlin attracts all kinds of traffic, but decent foot and vehicular traffic, as it's an open-air dining and retail district.

Great Northern Mall may be large, but it's nothing like the one now called Destiny USA. The latter is nestled between Onondaga Lake and Hiawatha Blvd. This mall was previously named Carousal Center due to the carousal installed there. I always enjoyed my visits with Great Northern Mall and the last time there was in 2021 or early 2022. I periodically pass by while en route elsewhere and am disappointed to see very little obvious signs of new development. At least some activity is going on inside at the east end of it by a very small work crew. By the time this work crew is finished, their initial renovation will be old.

Hi that is my local mall I used to go there all the time right before it closed I would be a frequent Mall Walker there I would go down the street to Wegmans or across the street to get some pizza and I would bring it there and I would even go to the subway that used to be attached to the Dunkin donuts but I think it caught on fire and close down and get Subway to eat in the food court. And I played at the arcade right up until closing and I still have the card for that arcade and it still have points on it right up until closing but by the time I got there when they were closing they had already gotten rid of the computers so I couldn't get any of their stuff right before they moved out. It's a little bit of history on that mall somebody owns the Sears building so that's why you heard active work going on in Sears its roof had caved in back in 2023 so they are actively working to get the roof fixed and or building torn down I don't know which because of the roof damage. Going downstairs there was Payless there was a daycare center right next to the Sears can I see you in the daycare was in business they took field trips over to the food court Play place tree thing that you see in the food court so many many kids that were dropped off at daycare play there while at daycare. It was a former Syracuse shop. They directed all their tenants and workers to go to the destiny USA location and now all work and or shop at destiny. It's a little bit of history on shoe department what's a former piano store and I think the piano store was in that furniture store that was next to the shoe department let the shoe department walled off and use as their back storage for all their shoes so I think that was one big store and I think it was also a women's clothing store at one point where it has the store hours on the window that you look that in the window. So the LensCrafters was there right up until closing Old Navy moved into the bed bath & beyond up on route 31 next to the Walmart in the bath & body works moved into what was radio shack up on route 31 by Walmart Dick's sporting goods move and took over the Best buy next to Wegmans on 31 and I think everything else except for Bill's carpet going into their main location in North Syracuse all went out of business and moved into the storage unit which was The Bon-Ton at one point. Furniture store owns Macy's. They purchased the building so it's their building it's not Great Northern Mall building anymore just like he doesn't own Sears anymore ask somebody else took it over and I don't think he owns The Bon-Ton anymore either as they have a new owner. And then when you get down further everybody on the Dick's sporting goods wing went out of business the last two jobs that were over there was CNY Mac store and then some sports store that had a rue21 rug in the entrance way which make me believe that it was a rue 21 a long time ago. The Toys r Us with all the rest of the Toys r Us went out of business and it turned into the RV store. IHOP had moved outside the mall from destiny so now you have IHOP Olive garden to Toys r Us building and BJ's wholesale club for those of you who don't know is basically a Sam's club. Someone that food court don't want the jewelry store at some point I think it was JB Robinson Jewelers I don't know and then I think that was a Sbarro Pizza that clothes and then turned into the Italian eatery and then it was an Arby's that closed down I'm not sure what was next to the Arby's but the Waldorf section I think was a McDonald's because at one point there was a McDonald's in that mall but then they said it was too heavy for the kids to be getting Happy meals from there after daycare so they closed. And doing some research I also saw across the hall on the arcade side was a Taco Bell and then next to the pretzel place what's a lemonade stand of some kind dunkin' donuts at one point. Then there was a friendly's restaurant there was two friendly restaurants that one had closed down for good but the other one next to Walmart by the McDonald's still open as a 2024. And then that was a regal movie theater I know I saw Michael Jackson this is it there and then I saw the Pokemon movie there detective Pikachu I think but I normally go to destiny if I want to go see movies. So I've had a long history at that mall and I loved it ever since it closed and during its time when it was empty and open some of us special needs groups would go in there and sit down and walk around and eat our lunch and a nice quiet Mall and we are now all sad that that place is gone and we can't Mall walk anymore without the temptation to buy stuff
