Nick though, I personally think he was looking around and seeing how uncomfortable everyone was and tried to make a joke to lighten the mood... but that joke didn't land the way he was hoping. I can sympathize, because humor is how I handle a lot of situations myself, both serious and not, and I've had to catch myself quite a few times from spewing a joke in situations that make me or people around me uncomfortable that I'm usually lucky enough to realize won't land before I say it, but there have been two incidents in particular that I still can't forget from just how bad I feel for not thinking things through before trying to make light of a situation.
Gladly, I've never done any lasting damage to any relationships I have from it, and both times people didn't seem to really be mad or anything from it, but you can still tell you fucked up in situations like that before you even finish speaking. Trying to keep things from getting too heavy can be a lot harder in some public situations (like, for instance, during a massive livestream where you don't want to make the vibes awkward in front of thousands of people) than a lot of people realize. And I can definitely relate to both "problem drinking" (not being great at stopping once you start) and drinking as a coping mechanism. I can definitely see why people who have poorly managed depression, major trauma, etc drink all day everyday. Thankfully, I've only ever had to deal with self limiting periods of grief and/or stress that compelled me to use substances as an unhealthy coping mechanism. I really feel for people who are basically stuck in a relentless state of _needing_ to self medicate.
Now that I'm in my mid-30s, hangovers are literally *unbearable* and they usually last over 24 hours. This has been a blessing in terms of harm reduction, because it deters me from drinking hard alcohol. I used to be able to drink an entire fifth+ of 40% alcohol by volume if I was really _really_ going through it in life. Now it's easy to make the choice to stick with beer that's ~5%ABV. And I never buy anything above 20%ABV. I'm too *CHONKY* to get drunk on beer. So, while it's not great to drink an entire 18 pack in one night, it _is_ much safer and much less likely to result in chaotic decisions.
If anyone out there is dealing with substance use issues, I'm really hoping that things will mellow out for you soon. Whether due to age or due to finally getting the support that you deserve ❤️ hang in there. I've delt with other types of substance use issues that weren't just intermittent like my relationship with alcohol. So I know how miserable and impossible it often feels.

She is a person who got into a bad habit, developed a severe addiction, and she needs a good and strict support system that will be there for her. They need to congratulate every step towards sobriety and criticize every relapse. People who struggle with addiction have a very fragile mental state, and that is why she might seem like a child. Detoxing, which happens within hour and you spike a MASSIVE fever as your body dumps all its excess sugar and you go into temporary "diabetic shock"(you cant burn sugar with that much alcohol in your blood). You shake so bad you cant stand or hold anything. Then, if you did it long enough, the absolutely MASSIVE seizures happen. Its insane like your arms and legs just get their own minds. I didnt drink at ALL as a teenager/young adult. Took a shot after some massive life changing shit and within a month was up to 3 fifths a day. 1 fifth for chugging, another or so to make sure the second that shit starts taping Ill have something to chug on. Also, detox will kill you faster than the alcohol. Little know fact is more than half of the deaths from alcohol(driving/OD) are literally detox death. She doesn’t realize she already is an alcoholic. I hope she gets to her rock bottom sooner rather then later so she can actually utilize the treatment she gets and live a long happy and healthy life.
My best friend of 20 years is currently dying in the hospital because of alcohol. I had a kid and grew out of the drinking phase, meanwhile we fell out of touch and he kept drinking. He was a functioning alcoholic, always held down a job and could just hang out like the rest of us. It was when he was alone at home, depressed that he would take shot after shot until he fell asleep. He fell at work a few months ago, while getting that issue resolved they discovered he is in liver failure. He immediately quit drinking, going into withdrawals and not telling anyone. A few weeks of no drinking he continued to get sicker and sicker until almost 2 weeks ago his mom brings him to the ER bc he’s acting off, couldn’t even open the car door. By the end of the day he was on life support. His liver was done, he needed a transplant ASAP. They need to transfer him an hour away but don’t think he’ll make the trip, his parents let them do it and he hung on. His kidneys were quick to fail though too, now he needs one of those. He got put on the transplant list for maybe a day, maybe not even 24 hours, bc once his kidneys gave out too they had to remove him from the liver list. He’s too sick, won’t survive the surgery and is on life support. His parents sign a DNR and we all wait for the worst. Just 2 days ago they tried to take him off the vent, and he is breathing on his own. We don’t know why, the drs don’t know why he’s not dead yet, but alcohol absolutely put him there. This is what the future will be for Minx if she doesn’t quit now. The damage she’s already done is probably big, but the liver can heal. She isn’t too old, she’s still young and can turn her life around. Any of you can. It’s never too late to quit as long as you’re breathing.

Gonna have to stop you there for a second. Speaking as someone who spent their entire childhood a wreck literally on the verge of killing myself, it's not a matter of "You cannot help someone who doesn't want help." here at all. Because I see a lot of myself in Minx. She's afraid to admit she isn't as strong as she thinks she is, because the second she pulls away that facade, it makes all her pain and misery real.
Right now she can pretend and deny. But the moment she admits she needs help, she's going to collapse in on herself. False bravado is the only thing keeping her together. The moment I finally realized I was nowhere near as strong as I thought, it ended with me overdosing on medication and trying to end myself.
So if that moment comes for her, I hope someone like Esfand is there to help save her from that collapse. Because it's going to be bad.

Jeez, people really don't know how to respect how destructive alcoholism is, even Minx herself saying "I need to know when to stop" just kinda proves she doesn't get it. If she wants to get better, she has to stop, there is never any going back for her, the road she's standing in only goes in two directions, and it's incredibly steep so if she stops on it she'll tumble in a single direction, there is no holding your place on that road.
I've known several alcoholics in my life, one in particular has continued on the road in the right direction, almost 20 years now and I'm so proud of him, but even he's mentioned how it never ends, it's not as steep for him anymore but he's aware he still can't stop walking. The others..... one lost his livelihood to it before seeking help, now he's starting to walk on that road again but he's so far down in the ditch that he might not actually be able to LIVE a happy life for many years, and the other.... well, he's gone. Kidneys gave out, and he still couldn't stop, and he's just gone now, and what can you do at that funeral but shrug....
If Minx doesn't realize this, there's only one ending, because that road only goes in two directions, and it's extremely steep.
