  • Bonanza - Episode 66 - Sam Hill - The Cartwrights join to help mystical blacksmith Sam Hill save the land his drunk, sea-dog father signed away to an old enemy, discover the circumstances behind his mother's death, and solve the mystery of why a tropical tree flourishes in spite of cold Nevada winters.
    Sam Hill
    Director: Robert Altman
    Writer: David Dortort
Stars: Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker, Michael Landon
    Genre: Western
    Country: USA
    Language: English
Release Date: 3 June 1961 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
    Storyline:
Claude Akins guest-stars as the titular Sam Hill, a blacksmith of extraordinary strength. Pressured to give up the land on which his mother is buried, Sam discovers that he has been sold out by his own father, an irresponsible drunkard-and that the new owner of the property is a self-styled dictator with a private army. Written on rottentomatoes.com
    Reviews:
"This is probably my favorite Claude Atkins character. He plays Sam Hill (you know, like "What in Sam Hill...?) He's bigger than life, can hit an anvil over and over without tiring (can eve beat the ol' Hoss), and apparently doesn't need sleep.
His main problem is a land owner who wants the land of his parents. His mother died on that land (stay soon to learn what happened), and there is some sort of magical power that makes a tree grow that shouldn't.
Edgar Bucannon does an excellent job playing Sam's wayward father who has returned from the dead.
Joe and Hoss, of course, offer some rather humorous comic relief. Adam...well...Adam is just there." Written by mitchrmp on IMDb.com
"This was an interesting episode, not the best but kind of weird and was possibly a pilot for another NBC western that did not get off the ground. Father and son Edgar Buchanan and Claude Akins have been estranged for years. Akins is an itinerant blacksmith who travels from ranch to ranch shoeing horses as it's needed. Buchanan is a drunk old sea captain and teller of tall tales. What they have in common is their devotion to the memory of Buchanan's wife and Akins's mother.
Mostly the story is about a plot by one crazy old self-styled colonel played by Ford Rainey to get a plot of land owned by Buchanan which has the grave on it. It's way too weird to describe.
After the conclusion of the story as Akins and Buchanan are preparing to leave the Ponderosa Robert Ridgely rides up strumming a guitar and announces he's joining them and he's another brother or half brother to Akins. The Cartwrights fully understand that concept. And off they go hoping presumably that NBC will want a series. General Sarnoff did not bite." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

This was the first time I've ever seen Claude Akins in a role that he didn't creep me out. He played a real bad guy in an earlier Bonanza episode, as well as many other rough characters in several other TV westerns & dramas. Nice to see him with a smile on his face for a change, rather than a sneer.

This episode was an unsold pilot for a TV show. But in this episode, Sam Hill was made out to be a friend of the Cartwrights who came by every now and then, yet this is the only time he appears during the entirety of the series. It was the same thing with little joe's half brother; seen once and never heard of or spoken of again. Hell, the same applied to all the friends and distant relatives who appeared. Seen once, never again. Even the neighboring ranches where never the same people across multiple episodes. Will Cartwright had 5 episodes in season 5. After that, not one single sentence with his name was mentioned.

Yes, this! It seems like almost every episode they are encountering an old very close dear friend of Ben with hugs and big hellos or friend of the lads or a really well known neighbor that they talk to like they see them every day. But then they're never to be seen or heard of again. It's like there is a serial killer hanging around the Ponderosa who's bent on killing everyone they know lol.
Well I don't mind too much, it does leave things open for a non stop train of interesting actors to appear on the show , keeping it fresh. But you'd think they could address this just a little bit? Like perhaps having just the occasional one reappear would be quite nice. There was Candy and Coffee but they are in different categories.

I did some research on Sam Hill and apparently there were a couple people who had the same name and whose legacy would fit the bill for this episode which does contain some fictionalised embellishments. Nevertheless I love how this show gets me interested in all the local history! I wonder if maybe there's other western places names with a mysterious history that can be attributed to real people, like (and you hear about this a LOT on the internet) about Bell's Canyon. Strange people wantering out west asking complete strangers "DO YOU KNOW THE WAY TO BELL'S CANYON?" in a loud and booming voice, and freaking them out.

One of the goofier episodes. Who came up with that silly opening? Some thunder breaks and the whole family runs outside because some guy they know is always preceded by thunder and lightning every time he drops by, like some kind of super hero out of a comic book. Hoss starts pounding an anvil with a sledge hammer and Sam Hill does the same beating faster & faster but Hoss falls down unable to keep up and says "No one can sling a sledge faster than ole Sam Hill". But what do you expect when Hoss is swinging a 3 foot long handle sledge and Sam's sledge is 12 inches long. In the final scene some stranger suddenly appears playing a guitar riding in on a donkey and Sam's father says the guy's been following him around since the guy was 6 or 7 years old, so Sam says "Oh well, let him climb up on the wagon then". And they all head down the road together with Hoss and Little Joe furiously pounding away on an anvil again. Similar silliness supercedes sensible scenarios supplanting severely suffering same-type situations.

The photograph of Sam Hill's mother was the same one that was used for Little Joe's mother in a different episode.

It's just a song adapted for the show by David Rose. His orchestra arranged all of the music for Bonanza. Cool little tune though.

Is that the same picture of little Joe's mama. I believe it is.

It's odd that Sam Hill's mother looks just like Lil'Joe's mother in the picture.

I'm confused, this show tells me to hate Claude Atkins, and then like him, and then hate him, and then like him.

Sure wouldn't have him living with me either might take him back to the ocean to catch the next ship out. If I was n a good mood. Probably just call him Johnny too. Definitely would not fit in with the Cartwrights.
