Lars Ulrich, more than any guy in Metallica or any other musician I've heard in other interviews, gets Deep Purple. Now he comes across as a genuine fan, not some guy who heard "Smoke On the Water" on the radio in '73. For the record, my Dad and I don't compare Ritchie's three August '72 Japanese solos in "Child in Time." Bummer.
what lars said was sooooooooooo true! Whats missing in rock is the spontaneity of the live show! Who wantss to hear the songs exactly like it is on teh album, why go to a showm just sit home and listen to the album
Dead on, guys! So great to hear from other musicians about their appreciation for such an influential band that so often gets overlooked by so many others. It makes me feel like (with other DP lovers) I'm in a secret club, that unless you know the feeling, you just don't get it!
my childhood time I've heard lot of amazing music. but then DP's child in time and beatles hard days night came into my ears. made me wanna learn music so bad.
I am 20, and just got into vinyl. I grew up with Deep Purple from my dad and just picked up Made in Japan for $10 on vinyl in good condition. It's the best 70s live record!!
I first saw them in 72.....Blackmore playing guitar behind his back, with his teeth....What a Super Band....The Greatest players....There's no band that is better!!!!!
Made in Japan is the best live album of all time - made at a time when live albums were quite a new thing. If you've never heard it you MUST listen to it as the guy from Metallica says - it is just amazing and the very best live rock music you will ever hear.
DP, overall, was magical to me, but Ritchie has always been my "ultimate", ever since I first heard Hush a zillion years ago. I think the really awesome thing about him is his unbelievable versatility, thru 3 distinct stages - DP, Rainbow, and his current work with Blackmore's Night. All were utterly first rate, all different, and all incredibly listen-able.
When I was a kid I heard Hush and River Deep Mountain High on the radio and got those singles before I started buying albums then I saw them a few years later live. It was my first concert experience I was in awe over the same things Metallica were talking about, especially Jon Lord playing his Hammond B3 through a wall of Marshalls and getting guitar feedback *on an organ* like Jimi Hendrix I didn't know you could do that kind of stuff! I saw them twice and they'd always end their set with Lazy. :)
Going to see Deep Purple on tour probably this summer, attended their concert last year. One word: MAGIC! I do agree with Lars Ulrich, they're better than anyone else!
+Nano B - Everyone should hear Rainbow - Gates of Babylon and all that great Blackmore stuff. It's like the musician's band that many casual listneners don't know about, some of the Purple stuff too.
Lars is not american, thats why. Deep Purple was big big big in Europe. See Lars, But also Mikkey Dee, Abaddon, Kim Kuzz and even what you can hear in snare stuff etc... in Sodom Persecution Mania and 2 First Entombed records... Ian Paice was the number 1 of all thoses guys.
Still think Fireball has weathered the years better than the other albums and has some of RB's best solos. Ritchie's very distinctive staccato / Turkish style from 69- 73ish is unsurpassed to this day....even by RB himself to my mind. You never knew what you were in for at a Purple gig...impro heaven !. Didn't always work too well, but such is the nature of the beast, but when Deep Purple were cookin, they were off the Richter scale. Absolutely unique in their sheer power, presence and musicianship. I'm sure anyone who attended one these gigs will attest to this....staggering out of Newcastle City Hall [in my case] feeling like you were in orbit and utterly shell shocked...that was a Purple gig !. Pity today's kids aren't able to travel back in time to witness a real Rock band in full flow. "Now where's my Robin Hood outfit"
I agree, his technique in those days was unique, you could always tell it was Ritchie on the guitar from the way he fingered the notes. He made each note sing and his phrasing was pure magic.
repetitivemotion Can't really think of anyone with a similar style. Loved the distinctive tone he got on the Strat on Fireball and the 335 for that matter on In Rock. It was never overdriven like so many later players, cleanish but really gutsy. Definitive "Stratocaster" sound for me...always will be. Ritchies sound started to change so much from 74 after "Burn". You have to move on,but I think he lost so much in doing so....still wouldn't mind being a couple of notes behind him though !!
jimmiemclovin The definitive Heavy Rock album to my mind. Maybe a tad dated now....just a tad mind!!, but crank the volume up and blast out any track on that album and it's "Heavy Heaven"especially "Hard Lovin Man" when Ritchie cuts in with that blistering harmony lead break...gets the hairs up on my neck even now after all these years
Last year, Deep Purple, Rush and another bands was selected to public election for Rock´n´Roll Hall of Fame, but they didn´t get votes enough. But, who cares? There are so many musicians in Rock´n´Roll Hall of Fame that do not Rock´n´Roll at all! I'd like to watch a kind of tribute for the band in a movie. That would be awesome!
The respect Metallica has for a band that came before them is Amazing. Metallica knows bands before them helped them. Deep Purple will aways be my favorite band. I love Metallica also. I just respect them for knowledgeing them.
THis was great! I love ZEP and Sabbath...but I listen more often to Deep Purple. No one comes close to Blackmore..not Iommi or Page. though, im big fan of all of them.
@Greengrass I hear you: Iommi was the Riff-Master Extraordinaire. Tony could also hold his own in the soloing dept--but Blackmore's solos were Magical for me: he could make those Stratocasters produce all of those cool Stratly sounds... :)
About funky style bass lines))I think he meant Hughes on bass, that period when Purple turn their music to the funky style, Glover never did anything close to the funk on his bass. But however , it is so great that Metallica really regard Deep Purple
Trujillo is correct.. Roger Glover is One of the best bassist ever.. he is not only the bass player he is the lead bass player.. and underated as his swagger and skills are without a doubt outstanding.. and he seems like a guy who is humble and will the time if he ever met his fans..
Mark 2 created their own GENRE with In Rock. A genre of which, only they ever played. They were quite simply, the greatest group of pure rock musicians ever. Unfortunately, because of their brief history, they were both the greatest and saddest story in rock.
This is the thing about Lars that a lot of people don't give him credit for: he's PASSIONATE about music. When you see him meeting Metallica fans he knows the actual dates of every place they've played.
It depends on your taste. Some people will prefer more heavy rock that is a bit more like metal and they will probably prefer Metallica, some will prefer something that is less heavy rock and more psychedelic and progressive rock, like me. So for me Pink Floyd and King Crimson are 10 times better than Deep Purple.
Анатолий Блок I'm just saying I usually prefer listening to Pink Floyd and Crimson rather than Deep Purple, I simply enjoy them more than I enjoy Deep Purple.
***** Don't get me wrong, I don't hate David Bowie, but he is definitely not similar to Pink Floyd in any way, Pink has they're own kind of style that nobody else has, and even if you found a similar song it's probably the other way around - David Bowie ripped off from Pink Floyd. Though I can't say much about this since you didn't tell me which song you think is similar.

Clearly, it´s interesting, listening to Metallica, saluting the greatest band on the planet, but besides of Lars Ulrich, they are not really discussing Made in Japan, only some comments about Smoke on the water (great song, great riff), but there are other songs, much better than that one. They are not really talking so much about the great 1972 live album from the Japanese tour. That album does not need any bigger introduction, one of the best live albums ever (if not the greatest) made. But it would have been nice to hear more comments from James, Lars, Rob and Kirk, knowing the members of Metallica are huge fans of Deep Purple. Lars has often discussing Deep Purple as a huge fan and how he saw them a couple of times in Copenhagen in the early 1970´s.
Rock musos singing the praises of other rock musos with complete integrity and sincerity. Look at the legacy of Purple to rock. The players across all the gens of Purple but throw in Rainbow as well. Classic singers, Gillan, Coverdale, Dio and yes Hughes as well. Ian Paice. God what a drummer. Blackmore - say no more. And there's no Purple without John Lord's Hammond and Roger Glover's mastery. "One of the best rhythm sections in the business", the boys said. Spot on. WTG Metallica. You guys rock.
Honestly. What would this world look like without "Smoke on the Water". Of course, Deep Purple created lots of other masterpieces like "Highway Star" or "Perfect Strangers". But for me everything started with "Smoke on the Water". And up to now it is a wonderful journey no matter were it will end. Lars Ulrich also said that everything started with Deep Purple. I found a clip with the title "Deep Purple - The Revolution 1971". And I think that's exactly how it is: Deep Purple - The Revolution 1971 (ruclips.net/video/-qxhHuMOLjI/видео.html)

I've always thought of Purple as a really hard rock big band! kind of like Buddy Rich's orchestra on hard rock steroids. Not only could this band play really fast but more impressively they could stop on a dime and restart at full speed after hanging on an 11 beat rest! crazy shit.
So bang on it is the riffs and pop is fluffy at the moment. We need bands and singers that play live and actually sing live with mistakes because it shows emotions and feelings. Blues from a long time ago is a start just listen to how things sounds and the singers too. To me we need more real live acts without those singing gadgets that are being used for perfect pitch and sound that is cheating and does not really seam real seams like a CD not live. So many more young rock bands ll because of sounds and musicians songwriting willing to have a go and so fantastic too a must for people that like music and talent. Being a huge, hard core Deep Purple fan, since forever, I agree with you about those great bands, but i would like to mention a couple of more who not to often gets credit for being there, as well; one of them is Uriah Heep, it´s impossible to ignore that great band, ok, Ken Hensley is not Jon Lord and Mick Box is not Ritchie Blackmore, but listen to the bass lines from the great Gary Thain (R.I.P.). there you have a bass player with both talent and style, even though he has been dead for about 45 years. The other band is UFO, a great band, very underrated. They deserves much more than they have got. Made in Japan, the greatest live album - EVER, but I would like to mention Strangers in the night with UFO as a great live album, as well. Just listen to Michael Schenkers guitar solo on Rock bottom, pure magic.

Besides bonham and Jon lord everyone is a live the greatest concert of all time would be deep purple Black Sabbath Led Zeppelin one show to end em all
Led Zeppelin Deep Purple Black Sabbath...stop!
@@larsnilsson8949 is true, Gary Thain is very good bass player, Uriah Heep I like to much. I agree with you
Even others band you mentioned are very good!
Diganle a Hetfield que escuche un poco de Purple aver si aprende a cantar de una vez
