No reason not to use them, just don't leave them on your headstock forever, as many people seem to do. They look silly and unprofessional anyway, so I tend to take them off right after tuning :) Having said that, the best tuner is still my ear, so whenever possible I use that.
Brace yourselfs, it's the lazy idiot that doesn't take it off the guitar is the problem,I've used the snark on 10 guitars no damage because I put it on to tune then I take it off 😮😂
@@RayGordon-o7n…I have a poly tune in my signal chain so when I plug in, I have a tuner…I don’t even own a clip on tuner, but I’m a cave man from the 1800’s…hahahaha
It's not the Snark it's the user. Don't blame the tool, blame the tool that uses the tool. Don't leave any clip on tuner on your guitar. I've played Gibsons for 20 yrs and used Snarks for at least 12 years. Never had a problem, but I also don't leave it on the headstock. More so I don't think those marks are from a tuner, they look like Capo bites. From someone clipping a Capo to the headstock.
How in the world does a rubber contact tuner, pull and scratch lacquer off the head? Is it left in a humid area, causing it to stick to the paint? It's not like the clamp is made with upholstery tacks. How? Really, how? I've had one on my Taylor since it was new, and i don't even have discoloration, let alone damage.
@@TheLexluthier Interesting. So then, the material used is damaging to instruments? Nice. I know there are many different types of compounds these days, many that will not react to paints. Neoprene, is chemical resistant in some uses. i read, that folks had damage to Nitro finishes as well. This seems like a simple fix for Snark. I have left my snark on my Taylor 214 now for 5 years, never taking it off until i use it on another guitar. Not even slight fading. I don't have lacquer though.
If you wrap a rubber band around the clip (back where your thumb goes) it will reduce the spring tension and lessen the pressure on the finish. I realize this is probably in part due to the laquer finish but those clip tuners can mess up poly too.
This is grim, but I've seen a worse Snark injury on a Martin D18. Just a huge dark stain where the Snark was left on the guitar all the timeI don't know whether there some sort of reaction between the rubber and the matte finish. Either way, it was impossible to buff out and none of my usual cleaners would work. Of course, there's nothing there to fill or refinish - it's a permanent dark shadow across that part of the headstock. Sadly, it's exactly where the embossed decal is so anything aggressive would have ruined that. Any suggestions, I'd be interested, but it's my friend's guitar and he doesn't even seem concerned ans still keeps the Snark there all the time. Odd.
...nothing says unprofessional musician as quick as a headstock tuner. I too went through the 80's, 90's, and 2000's with out one of these on my headstock.
I had the same problem in my Gibson SG standard, the part where the rubber tuner clip bubbles up on the nitro finish. I noticed and took it off and polished softly and it went back down and disappeared.

Exactly. I have 22 guitars various brands (no Gibsons thankfully) with Snarks on the all. 12 are out of case on the wall. This has never happened to any of them.
Killer video Gorilla Guitar Repair,The snark strikes again,After your done this Les Paul will be sweet!I used to always get crap from my buddy for only doing one wrap on my Les Pauls and Sgs. I see you do the same, I personally think less wraps help them stay in tune better! What’s your opinion?
I saw the gear page forum post by a guy who thought he was getting a nice 335, and the photo omitted the end of the head stock, He got the guitar and was Pissed, and the seller did nothing for him. It is pretty damn obvious that is what did it too. Lacquer and rubber are NOT friends guys.Gibsons are the worst.
Over time those Snark tuners destroy the nitro finish on Gibson headstocks - and probably any guitar with a shiny finished headstock. I stopped using clip-on tuners a long time ago, but a lot of people use them. My "beater" guitar is an early 00's Epiphone acoustic; the headstock finish is all jacked up from having Snarks and capos stuck to it on and off for years.
@@infinidominion It's basically not good to clip rubber onto any part of any guitar over and over - or to leave it on there. Yes, it's convenient to use clip-on tuners, but it's just not worth it if you care about your headstock's finish.
My LP has damage on the back from the sights on the 9mm hanging on my side. Still sounds and plays like a dream. Some people think a pretty guitar makes them play better……they’re a tool for making music to me.
I would rather have a boss pedal tuner and keep those stupid snarks off my guitar.
I do after watching this🎉

@@RayGordon-o7n this only applies to guitars with a nitro finish. this would never happen on an unfinished headstock or a poly coated one either.
I never leave these on longer than to tune up.
Same here. I don’t need a Snark footprint in the lacquer on the headstock on my LP. Great gadget, just not to be left on all the time.
It does actually say in the instructions for the snark Not To Be Used on Gibson Guitars Great Job 👍®️

Definitely capo
Same thing happened to my Gibson SG. Went back to a tuner on my board.
Tc electronic polytune...no head stock damage
It's a 20 year old guitar. I would have just left it. The war wounds and other stuff like that give it character.
I love getting character on my guitar but those little spots all over the logo do look pretty bad
Nothing looks as stoopid as having a tuner clipped to your headstock. It's like a fanny pack. Or Crocs. Or a pager clipped to your belt.
That whole outfit should be my Halloween costume! 🤘🤘
Lol..i dont mind clip tuners but i cant stand folks too lazy to memorize lyrics using an i pad or music stand...that looks extra geeky...

Rubber interacts with nitrocellulose lacquer. Those cheap guitar stands with surgical tubing on them have messed up a lot of lacquer finished guitars.

Great work! 👊😎 🎸
I have had the same problem but I caught it before it got worse. So I stopped using the tuner
I use a Korg clip on and only leave it for the time to check tuning and still have to wipe each surface it touches. Its rubber lined too
nashville bridge with bushing tuners. what is that? Do you refinish Gibson Explorers? How much?
conversion tuners looks like. those holes are big for grovers
My les paul has a snark bite. I don’t understand why anybody clips anything to nitro
I hate clip-on tuners. There's always that one string slightly flat or slightly sharp. I stick with my polytune pedal. 😊
