How to Point a Domain From GoDaddy to Bluehost - (Updated Step-by-Step Tutorial)

- Updated video! Learn how to point a GoDaddy domain towards Bluehost so that you can start building your blog as soon as possible.
If you purchased your domain name separate from your web host, you’ll need to make a few small changes for your blog to be viewed online.
In order for your domain name to be viewable, it needs to “point” towards your web host’s DNS, and the name servers need to be set correctly.
Bluehost's name servers:
ns1.bluehost.com
ns2.bluehost.com
This video is an updated version of my previous tutorial because GoDaddy recently changed its customer portal. Due to this, the steps to reconfigure the name servers have changed as well. So, this updated video walks you through the new process of pointing a GoDaddy domain towards Bluehost.

Dear Ben, Thank you so much for the tutorial.
I have a question please: Whats the different between ((Addon domain)) and ((Pointing domain))
I really really APPRECIATE your reply in advance.
Best,
Kian🍀
Hey Kian! Thanks so much for watching! The difference between an addon domain and pointing a domain lies in how each is used and configured within a web hosting environment. An addon domain is a fully functional domain that you can host within your existing web hosting account. Pointing a domain refers to directing a domain name to another domain or website.
I know it can get kind of techy, but hopefully that made sense. Thanks again for watcing!
Good video! It would be good to include the steps of assigning the domain to the Bluehost account, since that's essentially the biggest reason to move the nameservers over.
Great suggestion! You're right! I'm working on an updated video that shows those steps. Thanks, Bo!
@@blogwithbenhave you done this video what do I need to to on the bluehost side to link up the domain without the transferring it?
Hello! I transferred my domain but did not point to bluehost. How do I fix it?
You can't modify these default NS records when using GoDaddy nameservers. You can change your nameserver settings below, or add custom NS records for subdomains using a separate DNS service. please any help with this?
Hi, Hernandez! Thanks for watching! I'll have to look into this a little deeper. What exactly are you trying to do?
I have a question --- I use bluehost for all my domains and my host. But I have a client who purchased a domain from GoDaddy -- will this DNS transfer be sufficient for me to start using Bluehost and develop a website for my client? Or are there additional steps to make this happen? Confused... (new developer here)
Hi! Thanks for watching! Yes, it will be sufficient. Just update the name servers on the GoDaddy side and build the site in Bluehost. Let me know if you have any other questions and thanks again for watching!
What happens to my custom domain email when I point the domain to BlueHost? My host was MediaTemple, but they were bought by GoDaddy and I'd like to cut the ties ASAP.
Hi! Thanks for watching! I'm pretty sure all you would need to do is change the A records for the domain to point to your new hosting IP address. If you're not comfortable with doing that, then Bluehost technical support can help you out. :)
Hi, is pointing from godaddy to blue host the same as transferring/migrating the domain?
Hi, Alexis! Thanks for watching and great question. No, pointing the domain is different than transferring/migrating the domain. If you transfer it, you are transferring domain registrars. However, by pointing it, the domain remains at it's original domain registrar but "uses" different nameservers. I know I just kind of went in the weeds there, but let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks!
Hello! I cannot understand how godaddy domain understands to which site to point the domain if we do not specify any ip addresses and names. We only change the nameserver 🤔
Hi! Thanks for watching! Yep, you change the nameservers for the domain in GoDaddy and then Bluehost will "display" that domain within their platform. No IP address setup needed for this.
Question: Why would this be better than transferring the domain to bluehost? Is this basically the same? It looks like the domain is actually residing on GoDaddy.... but being hosted on Bluehost.... I'm just confused a bit as to why you wouldn't transfer the domain over to Bluehost? Thanks! I guess I am basically wondering what the advantages of this would be as compared to actually making a transfer?
Great question and thanks for watching! It's kind of a personal preference. If you already registered the domain at GoDaddy or any other domain registrar, sometimes it just makes sense to keep it at GoDaddy. Of course you could always transfer it to Bluehost, but pointing the domain tends to be a simpler way to keep things organized. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!
I'm getting a 403 Forbidden page a few hours after I completed this process. Is this normal?
Hey! Thanks for watching! Sorry you're having that issue. Sometimes it takes 72 hours for the domain to sync up. Are you still getting the 403?
I don't have anything in my Domain section yet in Bluehost. Is there a step I need to do first before following these instructions?
Hi! Thanks for watching! It should be in your customer portal on the left hand side of the screen. If you're not seeing it, I would reach out to Bluehost's customer support. They'd be able to fix it for you. I unfortunately wouldn't be able to fix anything like that. Thanks for watching and keep me posted! :)
Good
Thanks
How would you do this for webflow?
Hi! Thanks for watching. I don't have any experience with webflow, so I can't comment on that unfortunately. Sorry about that.
Thanks Ben. After pointing the domain from Godaddy to Bluehost my Microsoft Office 365 email through Godaddy stopped working. Do you have any advice on configuring DNS in Bluehost to work with the MS Office 365 email in Godaddy?
Hey, Jesse! Thanks for watching! That's a great question and I've actually never come across that. Let me do some research and get back to you on that.
@@blogwithben I'm currently having the EXACT same issue & came to this video hoping to find something to help.
Hey, Jesse! Just wanted to follow up on this. Did you get the issue resolved?
Hi! Thanks for watching! I'm still trying to troubleshoot this issue. Stay tuned! :)
@@blogwithben Hey, after pointing the domain from Godaddy to bluest, I've stopped receiving mails in Outlook. Is there any solution?
Does it slow down the performance of website?
No, not at all. If anything were to slow down your site, it would be the web host being used. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!
If we no longer want to use bluehost how do we reverse this actions
Hi Natalie! Thanks for watching! If you're just starting over from scratch, you would just point your domain's nameservers at your new web host and add the domain to that new web host as well. If you need to transfer the content, then you'd need to migrate the site files from your old web host to your new web host as well. Hope that helps!
So do I just keep going to my domain name website every now and then until it doesn’t show the GoDaddy advertisement anymore and actually shows my site?
Hi, Lathan! Thanks for watching! You'll need to "add the domain" to your Bluehost account so that the nameservers know where to go. Have you added it to your account yet? I'm sorry that that part wasn't in the video. I'm working on a new video that shows that part of the process. :)
@@blogwithben yea I think I did that. Now when I go to my site it shows bluehost instead of godaddy and now I’m working on Wordpress to make actually look like a website. Thank you
When I connected Godaddy to Bluehost hosting I disabled my Godaddy mail. Gmail is not working. Is there any solution bro?
Hi! Thanks for watching! Is your domain still hosted at GoDaddy?
@@blogwithben Yes Brother
@@mudasirmasoo888 If you're no longer using GoDaddy's mail service then you'll need to find another service. I personally use Google Workspace. You have to pay for it, but you can get an email address that uses your domain, but you get the Gmail interface. Does that make sense?
you forgot to show us what should be done on bluehost to get the domain shown on the bluehost platform after changing the nameserver
I just changed the Name Server as this video instructs, but am now trying to find that on BlueHost as well.
Thanks for watching! It can take a while for new DNS settings to propagate across the internet. Plan on 24-72 hours before your domain is fully connected. However, due to your hosting plan and setup, you may need to assign the domain as an addon. You can learn more about that here www.bluehost.com/help/article/how-to-assign-a-domain If you need extra help, I highly recommend reaching out to Bluehost Technical Support. They can ensure that the addon domain is connected to your Bluehost account. :)

Ok and. What’s next? Why can’t nobody do a video doing the whole process. There’s more then just changing the go daddy name servers.
Hey thanks for watching, Dustin. Sorry this video was only the nameserver part. I get your frustration and I'm working on a video that goes through the step of adding an addon domain to Bluehost. However, that is the next step you are referring to. You'd want to add an addon domain to your domains within the cPanel. I'll let you know when that video is done. Thanks again for watching!
Sounds good. Thank you so much for your help.
