Good day folks, Rod from My Water Filter here today, and what we're gonna do, is just a quick demonstration on the cleaning of a ceramic water filter cartridge, okay? Now, simple task. Basically what happens, the ceramic cartridges, as you can see here, no matter what sort they are, the long candles, the shorter candles that go into the gravity bench filters, or the normal standard drop-in cartridges, for the filters, okay. So, regardless of the brand, Doulton, Ultrapure, whatever it is, doesn't matter.
They're all ceramic cartridges. They're great cartridges. And what happens sometimes, is the water quality in this country is deteriorating. There's more sediments in the water. And because these cartridges are so fine, and so white, you can see the muck and contaminant sediments collecting on the outside. So, what happens is after a few months, or maybe even 10, 11 months, depending on how much contamination and sediment's in your water, the sediments collect on the outside of the cartridges, and it stops the water penetrating as fast as it does when they're new. And so you get a slower water flow through the cartridge.
So you're filling your glass of water, or on a gravity filter you're waiting for it to fill up, it just takes a longer time. So, whenever you see muck buildup on the outside of your gravity filter cartridge, you can simply take it out and give it a clean. If you see the water flow slow on your undersink or benchtop system, and you're using the Ultrapure, etc., then you can just take it out, give it a scrub, put it back in, and it'll be as good as new. All we gotta do is get the muck off the outside.
So, as I say. It doesn't matter what sort. Different shapes and sizes, but we clean them all the same. And all we're gonna do is give it a scrub under the tap, okay? It is important that when you clean it, you use something that is new and clean. You cannot get something out of the sink or under the cupboard, and start to get these, and start to scrub them. If you use a second-hand scourer pad, or anything that's got dirt, fat, mud in it, as soon as you scrub the cartridge, you will just seal it up with any muck, fat, oil, and it'll seal it, and you'll get nothing through it. It won't work at all. So, it's gotta be nice and new. You wanna give it a good old scrub up, and scrub the outside. These can be scrubbed many, many times. Up to 100 times on some situations, when people are using them on rainwater, etc. So, treat them with respect.
Take a minute, and you won't take long at all. So, what we'll do, is I'll grab the cartridge out of this gravity benchtop here, okay. Okay. As you can see, this one's got the three holes in the bottom, and basically we're gonna take the cartridge out. And you can see the inside. Cartridge is starting to get a little bit mucky. It's not real dirty, but you'll be able to tell the difference when we scrub it, that's for sure. Now what I'm gonna do, is not touch the ceramic, okay. You'll see, whenever I pick them up, I grab the cartridges on the ends, and with the little stumpy gravity cartridges like this, we're just gonna grab it by the base here, alright, and take him out.
On the inside, at the base of the cartridge, it's got a plastic base. So I'm gonna grab the plastic base. Gonna get on here and undo this nut. Sometimes the nuts can get real tight to turn. If it's too tight to turn the nut, turn the ceramic filter on the inside, while you're holding the nut. You can hear it squeaking a bit there, so it is pretty tight, this one. Okay. So we just get there. We're gonna undo that nut. Nut's off. And we'll pull the cartridge out. As you can see, I'm holding onto the base. As we can see, it really is starting to show some color, especially when you compare it to the white new one. So, what we'll do is give it a cleanup, and we'll be good to go.
Okay. We're right there. Put it back up in there. Okay. Now, just set it down for a second while we get a scouring pad, okay. Now, these are great. The good old Scotch Brite scourer pad. Four in a packet. You only need one. So we're just gonna open him up. Grab one out, save the rest for later, okay. But as you can see it's brand new, alright. Okay. So we've got the cartridge. We'll just turn the water on. Cold's fine. Just gently, gently. We'll get the scourer pad. And we're just gonna give it a scrub.
