Why was popcorn Sutton buried twice and does his grave marker actually say...Popcorn said F**k you?
Marvin "Popcorn" Sutton (October 5, 1946 - March 16, 2009) was an American Appalachian moonshiner and bootlegger.
Sutton died by his own hand by carbon monoxide poisoning in March 2009, aged 62, rather than report to federal prison after being convicted of offenses related to moonshining and illegal firearm possession. Since his death, a new company and associated whiskey brand have been named after him.

I took our son on a vacation to Maggie Valley, and we met Popcorn at a restaurant. After he ate his lunch, he took our son on a ride in his truck. We took pictures and he was very nice to us. I followed them to his store and yes, you name it, it was there. He said he wrote a book and wanted to know if we would buy one. Of course we did. That is when we found out he was a Moonshiner. Our son and Popcorn got along well, and we have often mention him. Our son asked where he lived, and Popcorn said somewhere in the mountains and they both laughed. Our son still has his book and has shown it to friends.
I think he was just a man that did what he knew what to do. A simple person and the government wanted to show their strength. I admired the will he showed. I would go as far to say the government murdered him. Id love to see more on this. Thank you Heather
The government were going to jail him and he didn't want to go in because they told him he couldn't keep grape soda by his bed. He was diabetic and his sugar would bottom out in the middle of the night while he was sleeping. He ended up "opting out" in his car via carbon-monoxide poisoning.
The government destroys everything they touch.

Popcorn lived as he grew up. He did what he thought was right. No criminal in my book
Popcorn Sutton was a true American and should be considered a national treasure. We could surely use more people like him nowadays, God bless him and may he rest in peace.
Popcorn was a damn saint compared to the ones in the government that say otherwise.
WOW! What an interesting story about this man!!! I believe the government just had "to stick their nose where it didn't belong." This is similar to the story of the federal government raiding the farm of an Amish farmer not long ago. Thank you so much for this great piece of research Heather.

Popcorn was a true Appalachian hero to many, including me, for in the true pioneer spirit, he did what he loved doing and did it without asking or caring what the government or anyone else thought. RIP Popcorn! Thanks Heather!
Not long after he commited suicide they legalized moonshine down here in n.c. what a shame! He just did what he knew.

He was a character! My uncle in WV was a moonshiner. Pretty common in Appalachia.
The government should've left popcorn alone. But, too many Leo's wanted that feather in their cap meaning they wanted to be able to say that they took down Popcorn Sutton.
Wow! I lived in Oak Ridge, Tn. late 1970’s and knew an agent that searched for moonshiners in the hills 😩. A shame, they just had to make a living. Thank you for all your hard work and research. Very interesting ‼️

On the TV series about moonshiner's, they often showed video clips of Popcorn, and mentioned him often.
He seemed like a good guy to know but also seemed like a gruff old ba$tard if you got in the way of what he was doing. Usually involving making moonshine and the law trying to make him stop. An unforgettable character.

Popcorn should be here today, the law just had to bother him even though he never sold shine to a single person who didn't ask him for it !! Popcorn's legacy will live on forever and I'm sad he's gone he was still young and he had a great wife who loved then and still loves him today she will keep his legacy alive as long as she lives and in death they'll be back together!!!
My great grandpa made moonshine. My grandma her father, my daddy's grandpa. He sold it to a judge for his wife.
You can find plenty of moonshiners in Rayburn county North Georgia. Many people my age group that were raised up in the mountains learn how to tend a moonshine still before they made it to the 6th grade in School.
Popcorn is a legend in his time i use to take care of a moonshiner and boy did she have some stories to tell before she passed and i can tell you this man knew how to make it and yes i would like you to see his grave and mote info if possible.

We'll have a drink up yonder! Our Lord turned water into wine and I wonder what He'd say if He was here in flesh now about this? Popcorn did what he could / had to do to survive. I don't believe he hurt anyone. I hope to see him again, R.I.P. Popcorn!
Being a man that had moonshiners in my family, and know why they did what they did, I would say Popcorn is neither a hero or a villain. He was a man that did what he needed to do to feed his family.... I say let his bones rest and if there is a judgement to be made, only God knows for sure why any of us do what we do and what is in our hearts.

I don't think he was a criminal, he lived life on his own terms. I'll bet he was quite a character and probably would have been fun to know. Thanks for telling his story.
I would like to ask if you have ever done a video around or near Hadley, KY, or is there anything interesting or significant in that area? I have mentioned that my great-grandmother was born there and it would be of interest to me.

I think Popcorn was just a man trying to make a living. He had the gift of making Moonshine, the Gov. was just mad because they did not get their share. It is just sad that he made his life an open book and trusted people. People that drink Moonshine trust the ones that make it and take a chance when drinking it.

I think the government should let people alone I don't think he was a criminal at all the only thing I didn't care for was him committing suicide as someone in the EMS service I have dealt with suicide and its hard on the family that's just my opinion though
