Program Note by Gao Hong:
I wrote this piece to celebrate two musical journeys. It is both the 70th season of the
Civic Orchestra of Minneapolis (COM) and my 50th year of playing music. In this piece
I express through music the emotional ebb and flow throughout our colorful journeys.
The piece begins with a horizon of hope, joy and optimism. As the piece evolves, we
are forced to come to terms with the volatility of our musical careers as mixed feeling and
unforeseen obstacles arise. But in the end, as challenges are overcome one by one, the
peaceful horizon reappears bringing us much hope for the future. Though this is the first
time I have had the honor of working with the COM, throughout our long musical
journeys we have both overcome many challenges, adapted to changing times, and
received prestigious awards and accolades along the way. And it is our combined wish
that we can continue to bring you beautiful and innovative music and that you will come
to hear us as often as you can to help us celebrate our long histories of making music.
Gao Hong is a fiscal year 2022 recipient of a Creative Support for Individuals grant
from the Minnesota State Arts Board.
