- We are playing an amazing early 1970s Kustom K150-8 Tuck and Roll Amp. This amp produces so many classic instantly recognizable tones! And it's actually completely solid state!! It's a 4x10 combo using CTS Alnico speakers. Simon Karlsson is playing a 1969 Fender Stratocaster and I'm playing a Gibson Custom Shope 1974 Les Paul Custom Reissue.
That is the best natural breakup of ANY solid state amp I've ever heard. Not even close either.
Really good to hear that! Cheers
Totally agree. Had a fender solid state amp a while back. It breaks up in kind of the same way but not nearly as nice. 🤘🤘🏽
Man that strat sounds incredible on that amp! I love it!
Thanks great to hear that!
soild state greatness , sounds wonderful, nice and punchy ...
Glad to hear it!
Always a pleasure to hear what you have to demonstrate for us 👏👏👏👍
Thanks! Great to hear that!
Bloody fantastic... what a great sound with that les Paul.. love it. Thanks for sharing Johan, top man as always and Simon too. 👍👌
Thanks Jonny, great to hear that!
I just heard Steven fryette say that these were some of the best sounding solid state amps around
CCR ... one of the 1st rock records we had ... great music ... still remember the cover pic with the amps ...
I have a black 2x12 tuck and roll speaker cabinet. I got it from my father in law who saw it one day at a garage sale and thought of me. He said a family of rats was living in it 😂. I changed the speakers out and now it’s just my main cabinet. Such a great look. ❤
Bass player in my band back in the early 80s had a kustom (teal) tuck and roll bass rig. Sounded pretty good
Right up there with the old late 60’s solid state Vox’s…Conqueror, Defiant, etc. Good stuff 😎
Thanks!
great demo guys, these amps used to be very common here in the states, all different colors and configurations. Seemed like every rehearsal studio had at least one in their rooms. thanks for sharing, Johan and have a great weekend!
Thanks Mark! Have a great weekend you too!
Still love old Kustom amps to this day. Lot of amazing tones possible with them.
Love this review and demo!
Thanks! Glad to hear that
I can feel my hair growing just from looking at this amp! 👍😁
😂 Cheers
Amazing tones from both you and Simon. I think the lack of Crocs on your feet altered your Les Paul tone ever so slightly 😜 God bless and rock on 👍🎸
Sounds great. Much better than "modelers" to m ear, and I own a HX stomp.
Thanks! Glad to hear it
Insane tone Mr. Johan!! Absolutely insane! Its almost impossible to believe its a solid state. A good design is everything! Thanks for the video!
Thanks Erick! Glad you like it
I actually watched your vid while i was doing fret leveling on a wolfgang guitar. The work seemed much easier and enjoyable!
I just bought tickets to see John Fogerty, here in British Columbia Canada, this August!
Great vid!
Peace
Thanks, glad you like it!
Great sounding amp. Thanks Johan!
Thanks Chris!
Amazing sound, killer playing, a beautiful video. Thank you very much
Thanks! Great to hear that
I SAW John use these type of amp on stage back in '98 @ Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne!
Had front row seats!
Really cool!
@@JohanSegeborn Ja!
Was an amazing concert! Got to shake his hand as well after at the foot of the stage!
Also it blew me away, sounds amazing! Other than that weird amp quilted wrap the sound is truly amazing, as far you can rely on listening thru headphones but for me it sounds exactly as in CCR recordings. This 4x10 Kustom it's a milestone to consider to have, even for today's so many choices and so more that 4x10s are not the most popular/practical amp format, but not any issue. Never seen a demo for this Kustom so so good ! Thanks Johan and Simon, cheers !
Thanks, really good to hear that! And yeah 4x10 combo are too high to be carried around conveniently
Personally, I think the clean and slightly dirty settings sound the best with a single coil guitar. But, the important thing is that it looks so cool. lol I remember that those amps were very prevalent back in the seventies.
Gosh dang that sounds freaking incredible
Thanks Justin! Glad to hear it!
10" Alnico CTS. Big part. I have a gibson cabinet with 2 of those, bargain glorious warm old.school tone
Yeah great speakers
Yeah, no doubt great speakers. I have a theory that proper guitar speaker breakup rounds off solid state distortion and makes it sound more tube-like. All of my solid state amps sound better at high volume, and I think that’s why.
Wonderful,Jo and Si,rock'n'roll 🤘🙏
Thanks Clive, Cheers!
Awesome! Those are great sounding amps!!!
Thanks!
I have a Custom Shop '68 Reissue from 2002 which looks just like yours.
It's an absolutely fantastic guitar.
By far the best Les Paul Custom that I have ever played.
Cool, yeah this one plays great too
Pure CCR! That Strat rocks!! Les Paul's always do 🤘🤘🤘
Thanks, glad to hear it!
Great video!
Hi, Johan! Awesome amp! For sure it is able to bring a mind explosion! See you!
S.
Thanks my friend! See you
I have an ancient Kustom 60w PA Head, I have used it in so many applications I forget how many, I didn't know about this Amp though, Fantastic! ❤
Thanks Phil!
Man, I’m going through a tough time right now and these videos have become my new comfort show. Thanks for doing what you do!
Glad to have you here! Cheers
I'm a Kansas boy and these were made in Chanute KS. At least the early years were. Definitely copped the CCR vibe! Thanks Johan.
Thanks Rick! Glad to hear it
That sounds perfect. Love the CCR sounds
Sounds great! Thanks Johan!
Thanks, glad you like it!
for a SolidState amp that's amazing sounding.
Thanks Ben!
Wow, no wonder those were popular back in the day!
Because they were SS, I never even gave them a second thought as to being relevant.
Cheers
I sure heard CCR! Love this amp Johan. You and Simon sure had a blast. Peace brother.
Cheers brother, glad you like it!
You both sounded amazing through this amp! I’m not a Strat guy, but Simon sounded badass. The Kustom really fattened up his Strat. I wish my local shop would get stuff like this. Cheers!
Great to hear that! Cheers!
Wow what a great tone from a SS amp! Nice and warm like a tube amp!..and it looks funky cool too!
It really likes that strat. Rock on, boys.
Thanks! Rock on!
I don’t think I’d miss tubes with a tone like this! Why aren’t there modern SS amps like this?
Thanks Patrick! That’s a good question
Vintage tube amps and the latest modellers are all most players care about...stuff like this is really on the periphery these days, which is a shame because I agree a well-designed solid state has its own charm
Love this amp. Would be cool if you tuned down to D standard, Johan, as that's the stuning John Fogerty used inspired by old blues players which is contributing to a quite "heavy" sound. Especially love the tremolo it has, really an inspiring and kinda crazy amp when you think about it. After seeing it on the Musikbörsen website I really hoped you would make a video showcasing it and thanks for doing so! ;)
Thanks Andreas! Interesting to hear about the tuning!
Oh man that tremolo is dark and has a lot of character. Awesome
Johan! Good stuff Bub! Keep em' coming!
He used the Kustom PA and tall speakers. He still to this day says his Black Les Paul Custom thru that set up is his favorite. Great one Johan
Interesting, Cheers!
Sounds wonderful !
Thanks Ange!
That 74 les paul custom RI is fantastic sounding . Its a shame Gibson Discontinued them a couple of years back . Those 74 Custombuckers are killer pickups .
Thanks Adam! Yeah I was convinced it was an original 74 with patent stickers
Yeah that sounds great!
Thanks, glad you like it!
Love your channel! My go to amp tester!! ❤
Thanks JJ! Glad to hear that ❤️
@@JohanSegeborn did you make one with Roland The orange cube 40 early 80s (Into a univox 2x12!) That is my one of my pedal platforms.
Literally just last night I was looking through your channel to see if you'd tested a K200 at some point... Impeccable timing.
Cool! Yeah this one was long overdue
A few years ago i was in Mexico in a bar and the owner was performing a blues set with horribly modified gibson junior ( i cant remember the exact model ) , it had some mini switches and not the pickups you'd expect. i spoke to him after and he said he hadnt changed it back to stock because it was john fogerty who had modified it , he let me play it for a minute or two but im left handed. ... ....fogerty put out new music this month btw
🤟😁👍They have a big full bodied sound. The cleans are sweet, clear jazz tones, the cranked sounds are crunchy and in your face. I have my original 1968 Kustom 100 head (60 watts) and two 2-12 verticle cabs (bought it new) with Jensen speakers. Speaker options were JBL 12" /15" D120/ D130, Altecs, Jensens, or CTS. The reverb goes way beyond any other reverb ever made. Awsome amps. Still occasionally gig my rig for jazz shows, super clean and bright with tons of lows. Also good pedal platforms for rock and metal. The original 100 (60 watt) and 200 (120 watts) series sound the best. Fogerty played a 200A-4 with harmonic clipper and a 2-15 cab with JBL D130s. The 200A-4 is highly collectable and will cost you thousand$. Not bad for a 60s / 70s solid state.
Thanks! Interesting info
Super cool! Cheers
Glad to hear from you again! Cheers!
Sounds amazing with both guitars Johan. Also looks really really heavy…
Thanks Eddie! It’s actually pretty portable
I remember several buddies playing through those. Probably one of the better solid state amplifiers, but damn…They were hideous 😂
The Tolex Kustoms put out fabulous sound too.
A fried's Mk III Bass rig with my Jazz put out tones lifted from Moving Pictures!
sounds cool. I wouldn't know it was solid state
Thanks!
I have two of these in black, less than $200 invested, just to salvage the eight wonderful CTS 10" alnico speakers...haven't even looked inside the chassis yet...
Most significant tone ever....
I gig with a Kustom 50 1x12. That’s the one I kept after having lots of the big heads and cabinets. They’re perfect amps. Basically sound like a Bassman or JTM 45. The push pull tremolo/vibrato rules!
Yeah really cool tremolos
I owned the 2 x 10 version of this amp in Black - back in the early seventies. Naturally - I blew out the speakers using my Big Muff Fuzz, and a crybaby Wah at extreme volume.
A modern company should go this direction in developing SOLID STATE amps and speakers that sound this good. I always wondered why CCR ended up using these amps? I don’t know of any other 60’s band who were.
Charles "Bud" Ross was a genius! Video's only missing one thing - Pagan Baby riff 😀
Cheers! ;-)
Keeping tabs on one in blue barn find that’s with a custom color Jaguar collecting dust
They weren’t ready but I might have to shake the tree again now!
Cool! Best of luck!
@@JohanSegeborn matching headstock tooo! Another good one Johan 👍
In the RUclips video titled "Mike Pinera, Ted Nugent Jam", ol' Teddy is playing through a black one of these. They had it turned around (we can see the slotted back panel) likely so that Ted wouldn't blow out the microphones.
Really cool
Aloha Johan from Pearl City, Hawaii! Just on does have a great sound. Probably lighter than a tube amp.
Aloha Victor! Yeah its relatively portable
Jon Spenser uses these too, pretty much all teh way up.
Wow!! 🤯
Cheers!
👍👍 sounds good,
Thanks Jonnie, Cheers!
k200 has the harmonic clipper, but yeah, the 150 definitely sounds like a Kustom
I live a hour from where they made those amps.
yup, thats the sound! where was the bridge you were showing? didnt he play a rick?
Thanks, glad to hear it! That’s the bridge of Älvsborg in Gothenburg Sweden.
@@JohanSegeborn Beautiful there, I like when you add stuff like that.......... Rickenbacker guitar, very brite.
Strat sounds epic-solid state does some things that tubes wont-you have to have an open mind to try them out 😎
Thanks Joel!
Awesome overdrive sound. Those CTS G10A's were better than the Jensen's.
Thanks, yeah very high resolution overdrive
👍
Interesting. I believe Jorma Kaukonen used some solid state amps while in Jefferson Airplane. Solid state amps were definitely a thing back then.
Interesting, yeah they probably expected it to be the future and put a significant effort into those amps
@@JohanSegeborn Apparently a Standel Super Imperial on White Rabbit and Somebody to love.
Hi, Johan!
Could you try the Cornford amp too? I heard that the gain of that amp is through the roof, wich is kinda strange to imagine that been used by Mr. Fogerty. I think it would be interesting to check it out!
Cheers!
Cool! I’ll look for one. Cheers!
Great tone from this amp! Was this amp cranked all the way to get that distortion sound?
Thanks Scott! It was close to cranked for some of the Les Paul riffs
@@JohanSegeborn Thanks for your reply! Sounds so good!
try it with a Rickenbacker!!!
3 :40 riff name ? I forgot what is this
I also like suspension bridges😉
That’s the beautiful Älvsborg bridge in Gothenburg
@@JohanSegeborn Thanks Johan. I’ll find more pictures. Cable Stay suspension bridges are also wonderful looking, but hey, I love power station cooling towers, steelworks, railway yards, foundries, electricity pylons, open cast mine excavators and all kinds of things that most people find ugly!
@@JohanSegeborn ruclips.net/video/wLv1cLgab0I/видео.htmlsi=bzzvEhUPtIuuz1Kr
I love this bridge.
I don't know about shipping and duty to Europe but roughly 600 dollars for a Dual Showman style tube head?? SOL MARANTZ , the tube amp hi fi God was involved in some way before the company went under. Looks like they were around from 70-73. They remind me of a USA Hiwatt -- in that they look like they could survive a nuke blast. Seem over engineered?? And being it;'s a tube head with very similar Dual Showman architecture-- looks like they could be tweaked to sound dirtier or cleaner with few small changes.
PLUSH mad TUBE tuck and roll amps at least for a couple years they were tube.
Interesting info!
Not Bad actually 🙂
Glad to hear it
it sounds like a bit gainier than a fender amp
Man, it's intolerably shrill with the strat. It's cleaning my teeth. Lol
I think only one solo was shrill with the Strat, otherwise perfectly balanced
@JohanSegeborn i guess the distorted full chords hides it a bit, but I'm a bit biased in that I've always felt strats need 'softer' sounding amps.
Howdy
Hi David
Check out Reverb -- they don't seem to have the "rep" that Creedence gave Kustom so they are cheap, cheap, cheap. If I recall a band called RARE EARTH used Plush or at least one or more of their guitar players did. Think Fender Dual Showman many had 4 sl6 tubes.
Interesting! So go for them now before they get the prices they deserve
Where did you find this?
It’s for sale in Simons store! www.blocket.se/annons/goteborg/begagnad_kustom_150_tuck_roll_410_hos_musikborsen_goteborg/1001320366
Any amp with a good clean channel can cop a CCR vibe pretty well. When I saw the live, John and his brother were playing through Twins and a Showman. They must have played the customs sometime later. A big step down in my opinion. Personally, I have never much cared for the "tuck and roll" amps. No Kustom amp has ever impressed me. Their Ross pedals were much, much better though.
Interesting I didn’t know those were related
These amps were a joke since they started making them . I don’t care who used them , everybody makes mistakes. The best part of this rig is the upholstery
To with all this gear. Your using an iPhone as a mic lol
Sounds terrible.
I have Klipsch speakers w/ subwoofer, so not little laptop speakers.
Doesn't sound particularly "tube-like" to me either.
Some of it does definitely sound like Credence, it worked for them.
I would not want that amp for myself though, that kind of sound fatigues my ears quickly.
So it works for Creedence but not for you. Music is indeed subjective
@@JohanSegeborn Indeed. Love your channel. Please do more experiments like the I-beam "guitar".
How can you not like the sound? Some people just cannot be pleased. And that trem is to die for!
@@andreasf6671 How can you not just accept that someone else doesn't share the same opinion as you do?
Some people just cannot be pleased.
@@MotorCentaur I absolutely can. I just don't see the reason to write it here. I mean "terrible", really? But go ahead ;)
