BBC1 - Points of View 8th October 1997 - Feedback from the BBC rebrand, Balloon ident and new logo

- This is a recording of "Points of View", where viewers gave their feedback (in an oh so British way) to the then new BBC logo and the 1997 BBC1 Balloon idents.
Sadly this tape was badly damaged in storage - it got water damaged. It was originally recorded in HiFi stereo (which you can tell in parts) but it was a real challenge to recover this, requiring cleaning of the tape, and it almost clogged the heads of the machine playing it back several times. Using a TBC though, it's at least watchable and is an interesting curio into the reaction of the new logo and idents of the time.

cool - you went to a lot of trouble to get this. Its worked out pretty well for a damaged tape.
It's very interesting to look at it now, especially considering just how utterly bollocks the new logo is (it's just the old one with a font change, not even a major font change). I mean they changed the logo about 3 years before I was born so I'm use to the 1997 one, I prefer the 1988 one that little bit more but the 1997 one is far from bad. However I must say I do love the hot air balloon idents.
It's great to see you were able to recover footage from the tape, was it mouldy or was it just damp? If it was damp I would have recommended tape baking (which involves heating up the tape to a certain point in order to dry out the tape to prevent the oxide from shedding for a while. I don't think anything would improve the picture quality because I think the binder was permanently damaged by the moisture.
Seeing a lot of people hate the 2021 Rebrand and now looking at the backlash the 97 rebrand got, it’s just a “here we go again” moment. I bet the same reaction will happen when the next rebrand comes.
Also, instead of 2017 Oneness idents, it will be balloon idents

Despite how dreadful the new BBC logo for 2021 is, even some viewers were bashing on the 1997 corporate logo, even the text was in Gill Sans MT. When they replaced Gill Sans with BBC Reith, it still looks awful. I was more used to the 1988 and 1997 corporate logos.
The 1997 logo was what made BBC an icon. These days, they ruined it with the text being Reith'ified.
