I think segments like this are so valuable. I have zero experience with therapy and started recently because of this show (woohoo and ahhhh!). I’m just not sure if what I’m experiencing is helping. So I’d love to hear more about what we should expect, what some red flags are, how much the therapist should be giving feedback, etc. Thank you so much! ✌🏻
This video helps me know why I refer to my former HMO therapist as more of a "life coach". She kept talking to me about getting fresh air, exercise, and having a plan to move forward in life. I gave her an analogy. I told her that the way she was treating me is as if I'd been in a car accident, and when the EMTs showed up, they asked "What exercises do you plan on doing to build up your damaged bones and muscles? Make sure you get enough exercise." Wrong treatment. (Not her fault. This is the playbook she was given.) Many of us have been in the mental/emotional equivilent of car wrecks. We need therapists who can help us deal with true trauma.
This depends heavily on the type of therapy you are looking for. Therapists have different theoretical practices they work from. Perhaps try finding a psychodynamic therapist?
I wish you would redo this video for those with cptsd/trauma. I have had to go to so many therapists who claim they can help, but really can't. If I knew how to fix cptsd I wouldn't be at therapy, but I feel like I have to become an expert myself in an attempt to pick someone who may be able to help. It's really dissappointing.
Yes! I would love to know if there is a way to find a therapist who specializes in CPTSD. Some will claim to be expert in trauma, but I don't feel reassured that they are good for CPTSD.
Cognitive Processing Theropy really helps with distorted perceptions we bring from a chaotic traumatic childhood. Dialectical Behavior Therapy is great for coping and perception skills, as well as learning to read yourself and your environment more accurately to use healthy coping skills.
You can have one who is excellent to get you through a lot, but not the whole distance. It is ok if you haven’t been learning , growing, and breaking through barriers to move onto another therapist who is good in the areas you still need to grow in.
Sadly, the two people I know who desperately need a therapist do not have the money. One lives on social security and it’s not enough for her rent, let alone anything else.
Dr. D, can you do a video on finding a counselor or therapist that leans more right than left? Incredibly difficult to find. Shouldn't matter, but that's the world we live in right now.
Someone help me with this. I truly have trust issues with the confidentiality piece. I worked in an industry and seen the therapy reports and logs requested in order for the client customer to qualify for what we offered and they freaked out, understandably and usually left. When complete, The info would then leave the therapists office into a third party company and who knows what happens from there. I want to not have this trust issue here.
Thank you for being disappointed in psychiatry these days! It’s a joke. And correct: only medicines / managed care, not helping anyone or even talking to them beyond checklists.
Simple, understand the words you want to hear and find the therapist that repeats them back to you and maybe a prescription for something for a “chemical imbalance”
I hope you don't mind if I ask how much vetting your production team conducted on BetterHelp? I've heard that there are issues with BetterHelp. I've also heard that BetterHelp issues cease-and-desist letters to critics

I love how the production team hasn’t changed the music even though John keeps making fun of it😂

Starting therapy soon, thanks for the advice
Lol @ that music and @ John's reaction to the music
This video was INCREDIBLY helpful to me! I’ve been thinking about going to therapy for a while. This video came out at the perfect time. Thank you!!!!
