These Eagles were the eventual NFC champions and had the best record in their conference, yet the Steelers were able to push them around like a last-place team.

The Steelers were the rightful AFC representative. I know the "they cheated" narrative against the Pateiots is tired. But this was 04 and it was proven a couple seasons later that the Patriots knew all the Steelers hand signals, calls, and allegedly even had their playbooks.

The interesting thing about the NFC is I believe the it had suffered from the whole Dallas, Green Bay, 49er and somewhat Rams dominance. I remember the Giants lost their way during that time and Coughlin had to get them back on track. I think the AFC in the late 90’s decided to stick to physical football and it carried over.
