Dan, what a treat! Although a player of Selmer Saxophones, my "day job" was in manufacturing. Your tour of the Selmer factory combined both parts of me. What a treat to tour the Selmer factory. Thank you.
Seeing how musical instruments and accessories are made, is always amazing. The perfection and goal for continuous improvement of the manufacturing process, makes videos like this be appreciated much more.
Hi Dan-I have bit the bullit my 1st 1972 Alto.....this week 1964 Tenor all Mk6...the metal build sound unreal compared with my 94 tenor....thanks for your tour brilliant.
Hey Dan I'm a Forshaw too on my mother's side! I also play saxophone. Mostly tenor these days...everyday! I also play flute. I live in New York City. My mum Anne Forshaw was from Crosby, Merseyside and played in the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. I had a Classical upbringing but I got hip to jazz improvisation! Boom! Past, present and future frenetically jostling for power! Nice to see your presence on RUclips. I dig it!
Extraordinarily primitive. The only thing here Adolphe Sax wouldn't be familiar with is the modern lacquer sprayers and the overhead lighting. And of course labor rates are up a bit.
I love Selmer saxophones. I currently own two of them. What about engraving, ligatures, and testing of the final product? Are those things done in the factory?
Coincidence that we both play saxophone though! Do you live in Cambridge now? It is kind of interesting to me what our racial or roots heritage seems to be. Do you think there is some Viking mixed in with the Anglo-Saxon or some Norman too? A good number of different tribes have intermingled over the centuries of what are still currently known as British people. Do you feel deep-rooted folk music heritage underneath our modern contemporary and futuristic music? There is a massive range of different relevant music choices and there is a characteristic style of speaking English presumed as the natural way (not so forced or snobbish as the "ruling" or "upper" class!) Nice work with the sax videos. I have seven short videos of me playing my tenor on RUclips. If you type in - Sherry Netherland you'll see me - known as Martin Jennings (Eric Jennings is my mum's husband) playing my tenor sax. It is a glamorous expensive hotel in a significant part of New York City. I am fifth down the list of videos that come up with Sherry Netherland.
May i ask. Why selmer not make the saxophone in china, indonesia, Vietnam or africa like Yamaha made Indonesia . Maybe the price will cheaper and everyone can fly like airasia
Thanks Dan. I have seen this video several times. I have never been to the factory. I hope to go one day after seeing this video. I visited the Buffet Factory many years ago which was nearby Selmer. I saw saxophones being produced at the Buffet Factory but I believe they do not make there own in house saxophones?Have you made a video about Buffet saxophones? I believe that British jazz musicians John Dankworth and Don Rendel played on their instruments. You mentioned the Concept mouthpiece when you were in the Selmer Factory Have you reviewed this recipe Dan? There is also a new Claude Delangel alto mouthpiece do you know this one I would be interested to hear your take on its Thank you for your videos done they have certainly helped during this lockdown period in our lives. God bless you and yours keep up the good work! Bill
I have a super action 80 series ii tenor . The sound is great but the springs on the key work is too strong and keys are too high . I prefer the key action of the yanagisawa it's much more precise .
Yeah. I am sure heaven is doing the same thing over and over and over and over and over, then going home and looking forward to doing the same thing over and over and over...........
I'd ask them how comes the horns they used to make 60-70 years ago are so much better (even though inconsistent). Not only no progress has been made, which is odd enough, but there has been a significant decline, which is sad. Thanks for the video.
Hmmm compare contrast this factory to the yanni film of matt storhr.....saxophone guri .. Think I now know why his take on a yanni was.. 'best of today'.... Interesting but still wonder where the key work is made? Not like yanni /Rampone/Borgani... Well used to manufacture all parts. Better quality control guaranteed... Just sayin😜🎷👍.... And as an engineer the skills in this setup is in the CNC/mandrill programming not the the overall production, excepting for the sopranino/bari builders...🎷🙄
As they say with puddings, the real test is in the tasting. Applying this to saxophones, Selmers play extremely well. It is not surprising that more than half of professional sax players use Selmer saxes.
@@gsco82 that's why I no longer play selmer.... But each to their own... Still top dollar for not top drawer detail.... Confirmation of course with matt storhr rebuilding a brand new one so it would play as it should... And this bloke is absolutely the guru of horn repair, he's forgotten more than 99% know. On one further note you'll find most of the jazz players if on a selmer, and many are of course, they're not 'new' selmer.... And having recently asked Andy Shepherd why he sold his mark mark VI he simply stated his Trevor James Autograph model is a better playing/assembled horn... 😂🎷👍
Selmer is a notorious company. It does not deserve the attention it gets. How do you think Henri Selmer obtained the patent from Adolphe Sax ?! I will never touch a Selmer again. They are very inconsistent and they all have intonation problems. There are way better saxes than these.
Well , a lot of people are dogmatic in what they believe in. Selmer France is overhiked. Their engineering precision is Zero. As You have said, there are better Sax out there.
Dan, what a treat! Although a player of Selmer Saxophones, my "day job" was in manufacturing. Your tour of the Selmer factory combined both parts of me. What a treat to tour the Selmer factory. Thank you.
Wow, thanks!

Super super excellent! What a great video ! I love my selmer! So great to see !
Amazing how handbuilt they still are… real craftsmen.
Wow I'd like to visit that factory in France one day. I am more more interested because I am a jazz Saxophonist. Thanks.
I would love to visit this factory sometime, would be an actual dream

Hi Martin, lots of Forshaw's in West Lancashire. Drop me an email, we might have relations somewhere along the line! D
Excellent Dan
Excellent overview of the Selmer (Paris) factory - thanks and cheers...

Oh I got the joke, it just wasn't that funny ;)
Bien souvent copié mais jamais égalé pourvu que cela dure.
Je ne joue que des Selmer
Le top
I thought the question about whether the alloy used in different horns was a great question. Something I'd never thought of. Thanks for sharing this!
I had a Selmer MK VII in the late 70’s. I loved it.
I have a mark 7.Love it!
3:25 Lmao so in the beginning, the brass from our Mark VI's are put in stolen shopping carts.
WOW it's good to know how they are Made. It makes a BIG difference. Thanx for showing the factory.
The visit made by Florent Milhaud, from the Darius Milhaud family...unless I'm mistaken.
Wow! If they give me a chance to work there...i will do it.
Please tell them to wake up mark vi walks on the music road in 2021, thanks for on tour ......Selmer FC
not just jazz saxophonists; classical artists as well!
great video, thx. i'm a big selmer fan, both new and old. fantastic instruments, must visit the factory!!
Very cool. Thanks for the tour!!!
Hi Dan.After watching the video i was wondering can you buy direct from the factory.
And any rejects?
Man this is my dream come true thanks so much
Excellent! Thanks
Extraordinarily primitive. The only thing here Adolphe Sax wouldn't be familiar with is the modern lacquer sprayers and the overhead lighting. And of course labor rates are up a bit.
Muito legal
Woah, nice one Dan!
I love Selmer saxophones. I currently own two of them. What about engraving, ligatures, and testing of the final product? Are those things done in the factory?
Yea, no testing shown.
Odd that the model 26 still shows 4 place dancourt paris (that is 1926-1927)
Great stuff !
excellent 👍👍👍👍👍
Well done 👏
Pretty cool. Wish you would have introduced the guy giving the tour. He didn't explain much tho. Were they secretive?
Nothing explained, nothing shown, nothing learned. FAIL.

Perché non fare un nuovo selmer con le misure dei mark 6? Sono mal consigliati sulla qualità
Thank you very much for this video! Good job!!
Hi! Great video!! By any chance do you know what was the price for mark VI when it was manufacturing?
Andrey Trunin I paid $850 in 1973 for a new 220 series Mark VI.
May i ask. Why selmer not make the saxophone in china, indonesia, Vietnam or africa like Yamaha made Indonesia . Maybe the price will cheaper and everyone can fly like airasia
I think professional Yamaha horns (82/62 etc) are made in Japan
johan cendana they make their student lines in Taiwan moved factory from the US a while back. Cheaper labor 👍
Thanks Dan. I have seen this video several times. I have never been to the factory. I hope to go one day after seeing this video. I visited the Buffet Factory many years ago which was nearby Selmer. Buffet makes saxes in-house in the factory in mantes. But production is very low compared to Selmer
Welp, there you have it. The alloy itself has "not a big impact on tone."
I have a super action 80 series ii tenor . The sound is great but the springs on the key work is too strong and keys are too high . I prefer the key action of the yanagisawa it's much more precise .
Funny. I did the same tour one week before you. You get to understand why Selmer saxophones are so expensive.
Very true - something I’ll be addressing in a video soon
Great video Dan, thanks for sharing. What version of 'Mercy Mercy Mercy' is that at the start of the video?
Thank you - that version is my own recorded on 'Jazz Vespers' - danforshaw.bandcamp.com
Thanks friend. Ok.
Did you talk if they repair ,overhaul selmer sax?
Yes they do, but in their Paris showroom. More in the next Vlog
Vive la France !!!
Lord how I wish I got the chance to work there, it would be absolute heaven for me
Yeah. I am sure heaven is doing the same thing over and over and over and over and over, then going home and looking forward to doing the same thing over and over and over...........
Is there a part 2? What happen to the questions?
I will post a follow up Vlog later this week.
I'd ask them how comes the horns they used to make 60-70 years ago are so much better (even though inconsistent). Not only no progress has been made, which is odd enough, but there has been a significant decline, which is sad. Thanks for the video.
Quero só um Soprano Selmer paris. Meu sonho ter um Selmer Paris Soprano.
🎷🎷🎷🎷🎷
That accent of baguette flavor is kinda saxy.
The subtitles said "selma" in the begining, lmao
The horn, the myth and the legend, the Selmer MK VI.....Sonny Rollins, bought his in a pawn shop, for $50.00, the rest is history.......
Hmmm compare contrast this factory to the yanni film of matt storhr.....saxophone guri .. Think I now know why his take on a yanni was.. 'best of today'.... Uh huh...needed a tilt key replacement for low Bb key Mk6 ..they’ve got none and can’t make it..WTF?
I mean to be fair they havnt made a MKVI in years, most people who need replacement parts usually get generic or scrap parts.
