I miss when DJs could just have a slick and cool stage presence. Nowadays you dont know weather the DJ is ever gonna touch the turntables or if he is going for a Oscar award with an overdramatic intro only to watch him tap buttons on the mixer for the next 5 minutes

soulskratch I think I ask the same thing on all the YT Swiftrock videos, but how did this brutha pass? We met him at a few events and he was the nicest dude ever. It was only a few years back I saw comments saying RiP that I realized he was no longer here. Respect. He did so much for DJ culture. Even though his name wasn’t the biggest out there, in the turntablist scene, everyone saw him up there with the very top guys. The best of the best respected him. It’s just always fucked me up that I could never find out how we lost this hugely talented dude

@@soulskratch damn. Appreciate the reply. i know it is a tough thing to reveal for those close and knew him well. As years went by, I just never found out what happened. I followed Battles in the 90s/early 2000s. He was the nicest kid when we met him in the late 90s, and arguably a legendary DJ. Happy he left this legacy of music behind that old and new DJs can continue to appreciate today.

this is Mike relm's euolgy from reddit.. I lost a great friend today. Someone I grew up with as kids and as DJs, Brian Djswiftrock Lucas. In the late 90's turntablist scene we were known as "STA" a crew of 5 kids from Daly City but that was just a formality. It got to the point where we'd size up other DJ crews and say to each other "yeah, but you can tell they're not best friends like we are." Sad but true. In our group, he was the gifted one. Incredibly skilled DJ, producer, played piano by ear, sang…there was no barrier to entry for him when it came to music. Most turntablists know him as one of the great innovators in the art of beat juggling. And when I say that, I mean he was REALLY far ahead of his peers…if he truly had any. Every time our crew competed in a battle, he'd say "guys, as long as one of us wins I'm happy". Of course, he literally always won. I remember before every DJ battle I'd be sitting in the corner letting my nerves get the best of me. I was a wreck, not even able to fake a smile. But without fail he knew just when to snap me out of it. He'd come up to me cool as can be and say "bro, don't even trip, you got this". Those words have echoed in my head to this day. Every time I feel the nerves coming up, I hear Brian. Even if I know in my heart that I'm in a situation where I don't necessarily "got this", I'm not stressing because I know Brian has my back. We were so close, like brothers; I don't think he ever really knew what an impact he's had on me. It's one of those things - whenever it came time to talk about how much we've all meant to each other, we'd just start laughing. I'd like to think it didn't matter, we all just knew. He's far too humble to think that after 20 years it's those 3 words…"you got this"…are something that I've carried with me and think about on a regular basis. I'm hating the fact that less than 24 fucking hours ago I could have just called to tell him that.@@Sonnylintag
