Karajan Walküre 2 excerpts Vickers and Janowitz

These two excerpts are from Karajan's never finished(aborted) film of
Die Walküre.
recorded in 1967/8 at Salzburg with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra,
Gundula Janowitz and Jon Vickers

It's too little, alas, but how wonderful to have this film. Jon Vickers is a great, great singer and magnificent singing actor and, way beyond all other tenors, my favourite. Thank you so much for finding and posting this gem.

Thanks for this. The productions are beautiful, and Birgit Nilsson's complaints about Karajan's misplaced priorities notwithstanding, I do think that he knew what he was doing in terms of the visual aspect. But it's so funny that at the end of both acts, the picture immediately turns to him once the major stage action is done. Even a film project was the Karajan show through and through.

I guess Nilsson was used to the Bayreuth productions but even then, this doesn't look much different than the productions Wieland and Wolfgang produced at Bayreuth.

@ She would get very annoyed that he would spend all the prep time fiddling around with lights rather than preparing the music! I agree that he was definitely influenced by the Bayreuth productions, but that’s not a bad thing at all.

there is very little remaining of the filmed Walkure which used the DG recording. Thomas Stewart and Regine Crespin sang Wotan and Brunnhilde

They're lip synching to their own voices, and merely making the amount of lip/jaw/neck action necessary to convince anyone who hasn't seen it done for real. The singing is incredible! I'd like to see that, but merely hearing Vickers in his prime is priceless.
