    This video is great, I get asked by people all the time how to get into law school so I'll share this next time I get asked. Pretty much bang on. I got in back in 2015 and this is pretty much the approach I took to get in. The personal statement actually makes quite a difference, I also know, as someone who did a one year masters in between that at least Dalhousie, where I went, really values those.

    Hi. I from Nigeria, I studied philosophy.
    What are the requirements to get into law school in Canada ?

    • @musicbeauty00
      @musicbeauty00 2 года назад +6

      Hey Vitalis, I’m a law student in Ontario and what you need in order to get into law school in Canada differs depending on the province. In Ontario, we have to complete an undergraduate degree before we can enter law school. We also need to take the LSAT. What you choose to study as your undergrad major is not as relevant as the grades that you got and your extracurriculars. So I would focus on studying for the LSAT and building up your extracurriculars/hobbies/work experience in the meantime as you are applying. If you are applying to law schools in Quebec, the process differs because some law schools do not require the LSAT as part of their admissions process.

      Hey can diplomat holders give lsat in Canada

    • @MrChippinator
      @MrChippinator 3 месяца назад

      A little late to the party but pretty much every school (ex-Quebec), even if they don't require it, now wants people with fully completed degrees. It's also gotten way more competitive since I got in. I went to Dal, which is considered one of the harder schools to get into, and, today, I probably wouldn't have gotten in if I'm being honest. You basically need a GPA in the 3.7 range, on a 4.3 scale, and an LSAT of at least 160 to go to even the more "regional" schools now. If you want to go to the "national" schools, you now need at least a 165 and 3.8 plus extracurriculars and stuff. One thing that can also make a difference is if you do a masters degree. Certain schools think this is impressive. I know it helped me to get in.

      Depends on a lot of things. Assuming you have significant practice experience, grades matter a lot less. Some schools weirdly have a cutoff. I ended up doing a PhD with a fairly impressive record from my LLM (including existing publication), and, while many top schools didn't care that my JD grades were below average, as law school and law academics are two very different things, some just had a weird cutoff policy. If schools like that don't want you, it's their loss.

      Hi there! It's great that you're planning so far in advance. In high school, take courses that help you develop your reading and writing skills (e.g. english, philosophy, history, etc). Continue this in university and complete a degree in a subject you enjoy. As for law schools, there is Queen's University Faculty of Law in Kingston Ontario. Good luck!

      I have a friend from Azerbaijan who moved to Canada at a similar age I think. She is now a tax lawyer. Look her up, Rafiga Law. So it's definitely doable. I, as well as every lawyer I know, will tell you the best way to get into law school in Canada is to go to any university and finish at the top of your class in your undergraduate degree at a decent, not great, university. Going to a top school and finishing mediocre will only hurt you. The LSAT is important, but, unlike in the US, a 165 will probably get you into just about anywhere. Also, try to limit the partying during your first degree. I know it's challenging but the sacrifice will be worth it once you get to law school. Once there, your grades matter less than people think.

    • @TheJurisJourney
      @TheJurisJourney  5 месяцев назад

      It really depends on the school you're applying to. While grades are important, some schools have a more holistic approach and also consider things like your extra curriculars and community involvement.

    • @MrChippinator
      @MrChippinator 3 месяца назад

      Today, aim for a 3.7 on a 4.3 scale. It's gotten way more competitive than when I applied. If you have a crazy good LSAT score, a Masters degree in something or a professional designation already, that can really offset your undergraduate GPA too. I hope this is helpful.

      Hi Aman, generally to be academically eligible to enter most common law schools in Canada requires obtaining an undergraduate degree. You should consult the law school you are interested in to find out whether degrees from other countries are accepted.

      Start reading. I don’t care what, but read every single day. For a few minutes, up to an hour. A newspaper, article, book. You must hone your reading comprehension skills to a level of mastery by the time you do your LSAT. Your ability to critically analyze paragraphs in a logical frame and identify arguments is paramount. I got into law school a few days ago, and I had wished I had begun working on my analytical skills early on in high school. Good luck!

      Aside from working on your reading comprehension, logical reasoning, etc. that has already been mentioned in the comments. I would also strongly suggest building up a network of references from your community (volunteer/work). You’re quite young so this would be too soon but you can start envisioning what kind of narrative you want to pursue for when you do actually choose to attend university and apply to law schools thereafter. Extracurriculars are very important to many law schools. They usually weigh it equally on par with the LSAT and your university grades.

      @@musicbeauty00 As for extra curriculars, I really love debate. Came 13th at nationals this year. Reading comprehension is good but still needs work, thanks for the advice guys!
