Primitive Grass and Rush Basket with Lid

  • Ancient cultures were masters at utilizing natural materials found in their surroundings to create useful and beautiful objects and tools. For a very long time I have been fascinated with baskets but lacked the patience and time to try creating one. I had previously made a few baskets from cattails but this time in this video I experiment with baltic rush and wild oat grass to see what I can create. After seven hours of weaving I finally had a finished product. This was good practice and I learned a lot. The baltic rush is a really good material but the wild oat grass is not good for basketry. Next time I will do it differently.

It would be interesting to see another basket made with the same materials only with the baltic rush being dried out and rehydrated to cut down on the shrinkage that happens as the fresh product dries out. I know when they make baskets out of cattails and other rushes they are dried out and then resoaked. But the basket was totally beautiful. the green stands out lovely and the rush is perfect for other projects. Making small woven rugs and placemats for your kitchenware would be nice 1 evening projects. PS - if you can find it, a small twig with a pithy core that can be pushed out or a hollowed out bird bone sharpened would make a nice sewing awl for baskets.

Think about this someone had to be the first to think of this. We call it primitive now but back then this was cutting edge just the amount of ingenuity it would take to think and solve problems this way is fascinating. Not to mention The fact that it had to be a good idea or it would've been tossed to the side and back to The drawing board. The mind truly is a wondrous thing.
