Frodo decided to leave the Fellowship because he realized that the Ring was tempting all of them and that it was just a matter of time before what happened to Boromir happened to the rest. The ring's influence is particularly strong against strong, "good" people like Boromir, Gandalf and even Aragorn, because like Isildur, they will assume that they are strong enough to control it, not realizing that it's wholly evil and will in time corrupt anyone who tries to wield it. That was Galadriel's point at the pool; ultimately Frodo would have to bear it alone. Out of all the races, the Hobbit's, who generally didn't seek power, were the most immune to it's effects, but given time, even they would fall to it's relentless call to claim it and use it's power to do "good" or like Bilbo, become obsessed with it.

Boromir always gets misunderstood. His corruption is super sad because he believes he is strong enough purely because of things his father told him, and he's absolutely right with his line, "By the blood of our people are your lands kept safe." Gondor, his kingodm, is on Mordor's doorstep. Meaning any time Sauron wants to march an army out, Gondorians are the first line of defense. He desires the ring because he sees a way to turn the tide against Sauron and hopefully prevent more of his men from dying and his kingdom from being slowly destroyed.

Gandalf's death is super interesting because of deeper lore details. He let go for multiple reasons. First of which, its a rather small detail so you're forgiven for missing it, but the goblins were already lined up on the opposite side of the bridge, and were starting to shoot arrows at the fellowship, so it would have put them in danger to try to run forward to save Gandalf. Gandalf knew that would be dangerous, so instead told them to fly (meaning "to flee" in that context) to save them from further harm. The 2nd reason which is more mired in lore, is that Gandalf saw a need to kill the Balrog because its a massive threat for the whole world, especially if it chooses to aid Sauron.

@@lordmysterio141 Dragons don't ally with anyone, which is why Sauron never reclaimed all of the Seven (I think he regained only three of them). Those in dragon hoards were beyond his reach. Even a power like Morgoth, who created dragons, wasn't able to fully control them, as witness Glaurgung's wilfulness and inability to completely obey commands given to him. Smaug wouldn't have alloied with Sauron. The balrog is a more questionable case. I think, given the chance, it would have claimed the Ring as its own and just might have been strong enough to resist Sauron's domination of it, though that's more questionable since it's a maiar like the Istarii, and since Gandalf and Saruman were potentially corruptible it's equally likely that Sauron would have been able to dominate the balrog had it taken the Ring.

One idea behind the quest to destroy the ring is that Sauron, the creator of the ring, can't imagine that someone would want to destroy it. The ring is the ultimate source of power, why would someone get rid of it? Gandalf uses that to the Fellowship's advantage. By sending Frodo to Mordor, he's sending him to the last place Sauron would look.

In Lord of the Rings you have a physical world and a spirit world. When a mortal puts on the One Ring, it pulls them into the spirit world. This makes them invisible to the mortal world, but more visible to anything in the spirit world. The Ring Wraiths exist mostly in the spirit world at this point, which is why they don't really have bodies you can see in the mortal world. When Frodo puts on the One Ring, he can see their true forms but they can also see him more clearly.

It's only in the spirit world that the wraiths can capture Frodo. It's only hinted at in the movies, but every time the wraiths are nearby they are mentally compelling Frodo to put on the Ring, so they can take him away. The wraiths actually have very little physical power in the real world, and work mostly through inducing terror.

Great reaction choice! Let me help you understand the behavior of the hobbit Pippin.
Hobbits live for a long time, and they age more slowly than humans, and it takes longer to become an adult. In the books, hobbits start to come of age at 33. Pippin is 28, the youngest of the 4 hobbits. Merry is 36, Sam is 38, and Frodo is oldest at 50. That's in the books. I think they were all younger in the movies, but Pippin is still just a kid compared to the others, especially Frodo.

Some extra background information so you understand the overall story. Sauron imbued the ONE ring with 95% of his power and will, so when it was cut off, he lost control of the orcs, trolls, and goblins, also it ripped his spirit from his body. The dark riders "Ring Wraiths" were the 9 human lords that Sauron corrupted, and now they are living dead spirits. Hobbits as a race are mostly immune to the corruption of the ring, which is why they are not controlled by it for so long.

Key information: That bit about Galadriel's hair is not only beautiful, it's also deeply meaningful. Galadriel was born in the First Age before the creation of the sun and the moon, when the world was lit by the Two Trees of Valinor. (These trees later became the sun and moon through one's fruit and one's flower, but that's another story.) It was said that Galadriel's hair held the light of these trees. Well, her uncle, a somewhat obsessive artist named Fëanor,(Very famous and mighty Elf) asked three times that she give him a strand of her hair to use in one of his works. Galadriel sensed darkness in him (she was so right) and refused each time. But Gimli only hinted once and very politely, after she pressed him to know what gift would please him, and she gave him three strands. You may have noticed how Legolas smiled when he heard this. He knew the old story, and knew that her gift meant the Lady of the Woods had deemed this Dwarf to be worthy of the Elves' respect and friendship. ETA: BTW, Pippin is the nickname of Peregrin Took, and Merry is the nickname of Meriadoc Brandybuck. Pippin is adventurous (a typical Took trait), cheerful, inquisitive, but often thoughtless. He is also (in the Hobbit reckoning) not quite an adult. In the USA, he'd be just barely old enough to enlist in the military. Merry is older than Pippin. He's also the more sensible of the two and (being a Brandybuck) is more alert to how things might go wrong.

deeper lore version for you: Galadriel's gift to Gimli has a deeper meaning behind it, like most things in this movie and reflects the expanded lore of the middle earth universe. Galadriel is one of the 2-3 most powerful and wise elves remaining in Middle Earth since the time the land was young. She was born in a place called Valinor, or the Undying land... which is basically the place of residence of the Valar, the local pantheon, the local "gods" as you may call them. Back then, the world was not illuminated by the sun, the moon and the stars, but rather by 2 trees of gold and silver, Telperion and Laurelin. It is said that Galadriel's hair had somehow captured some of the shine of those two trees. Her uncle Fëanor, who was a great king of the Elven people and also arguably their greatest craftsman to ever live, asked/demanded that she give him a lock of hair, so that he could use it to fashion 3 gems that would shine of the same light as the trees. Sensing his pride and arrogance, she refused his demand, tree times. He stopped asking and made the gems anyway, managing to complete the task he had set for himself even without her hair. Around these 3 gems, the possession of which became the driving force for many of the greats in the world, entire wars that lasted for centuries exploded. The gems actively shaped the fate of the races of middle earth to the point that the aforementioned Valar got involved directly. During these times, events surrounding the gems brought about the traditional enmity between Dwarves and Elves... the same enmity that Gimli still feels towards them. That enmity however does not survive his encounter with the wise Galadriel, whom Gimli basically falls platonically in love with. By giving him 3 of her hair, Galadriel is opening a door, offering an olive branch that might one day close the gap that divides these two races. Legolas, himself being an Elven prince and centuries old, knows of the story, as it shaped the lives of all Elves, and his subtle smile is possibly the first act of acknowledgment and reconciliation. it is also a way for Peter Jackson, the director of the film, to give a nod to all of the fans who know these facts and backstories... a way to make us feel seen, and to make us appreciate just how deeply the makers of the film respect the books and larger universe created by Tolkien.
The thing with the hair may seem weird, but there is a significance to it in real life as well as in the lore of the story. In real life, it was not uncommon for wives, fiancés, or even girlfriends to give their men (who were going off to war), a lock of their hair as a keepsake, particularly in WWI, which Tolkien fought in. The lore part of it comes into play in The Silmarillion, Tolkien's tales of the creation of Arda, the Undying Lands of Valinor, and Middle Earth. Galadriel is many, many thousands of years old, and was born in Valinor before the sun and moon were even created. At the time, the world was lit by two trees, one gold and one silver which would shine at different times from each other, but would shine together once a day when one would fade and the other brighten. Galadriel's hair was said to look like the light of the mingled light from the two trees, which may have inspired Feanor, a master craftsman and heir to the high king of the Noldor, to craft the Silmaril's which were three jewels that captured the light of the two trees, one golden light, one silver light, and one co-mingled light. Fëanor had a bit of a thing for Galadriel and begged her for her hair three different times, which she rejected because she could perceive the inner darkness of his heart and rejected him, which made them "un-friends" after that. There is a lot more to the lore than that, so this is the super crib-notes version. But the point is, it was VERY significant that she granted Gimli three of her hairs to a dwarf, when she would not to the son of her king many thousands of years ago.

The One Ring is like a powerful drug. The longer you have it and use it, the more addicted you become, and then you are corrupted by the evil radiating from it.
Hobbits are mostly gentle folk of the land, so it takes longer for them to become twisted by the Ring.

The Tower bit is explained ONLY in the Unfinished Tales Book: In [manuscript] C The Black Riders arrived at the Gate of Isengard while Gandalf was still a prisoner in the tower. In this account, Saruman, in fear and despair, and perceiving the full horror of service to Mordor, resolved suddenly to yield to Gandalf, and to beg for his pardon and help. Temporizing at the Gate, he admitted that he had Gandalf within, and said that he would go and try to discover what he knew; if that were unavailing, he would deliver Gandalf up to them. Then Saruman hastened to the summit of Orthanc - and found Gandalf gone. Away south against the setting moon he saw a great Eagle flying towards Edoras.
See, the thing is he was always master of studying the enemy and even being able to think like they do to always know exactly the best ways to handle ever situation and so on, but the thing is he didn't just become the enemy, he at this time in a sense for once actually grew afraid of him, probably Sauron did what Sauron did with Finrod Felagund, which basically widdled Saruman with various visions of the past and future until it wore him down.

It's very appropriate that you started this talking about the experience of a veteran attempting to integrate back into their home society, because it was exactly that struggle which inspired Tolkien (among other things). He fought in WWI, and his son fought in WWII.
20:59 The way the Ring makes a person invisible is by pulling them into the Spirit World. Most people can't see things that are there. But the Ringwraiths actually see better in that world than the physical one because they mostly exist in that world. The elves with the funky lights in their eyes (pause on a close-up of Galadriel) can also see in the Spirit World and exist partially in it.

To clarify things, Elrond & Elros were half elven twin brothers who can choose to be mortal or immortal because of their parents, Eärendil and Elwing both half elven made a great sacrifice and went to Valinor to ask for help. Instead of being punish, the valar listened to them, that led to a great hosts of Valar and maiar went to Middle Earth that laid waste to Beleriand. After the War Of Wrath, the valar rewarded them for their sacrifices. They can choose to be elf or men, including their children. They chose immortally, but never return to Middle Earth because they thought that their twin sons had died. But they didnt die. Elrond chose to be immortal while his twin brother Elros chose to be mortal. He founded the Kingdom of Numenor. He lived in Numenor Island and blessed with a long life that include his descendants Those men who fought for the war were rewarded a long life but not their families or children. Only the family of Elrond can choose to be immortal or mortal in which Arwen did. Aragorn is the direct descendant of Elros, thats why he has a long life. The average lifespan of a Numenorean at their height was a few thousand years maximum! Remember this is the SHORT version, there are so many moving parts that will make you want to dive into the books or the audio books or even do reaction videos to the famous lore videos by the biggest lore channels out there!
When you’re done the trilogy try doing reaction videos just like Moviejoob did now with the lore recently as well as OmarioRPG. I recommend videos by GirlNextGondor and The Red Book, and Tolkien Untangled and especially Men Of The West. Many other cool ones I’ll recommend in the comments section of those reaction videos you do from Tolkiens Legendarium lore videos. They are super engaging. You’ll be in love. Nothing would have existed if Tolkiens works never hit the light of day as they were meant to stay private and sometimes be shared with his children and so on. No game of thrones. No Skyrim. No dungeons and dragons. None of it. Not even Star Wars. Not even Harry Potter!

One thing I wish the movies did differently was give Sauron a bit more of a backstory. It's not clear what he even is in the movies. He's one of many immortal spirits created by God, whos task was to help design and build the world. Sauron is a lesser spirit, sort of an arch angel. He was once able to change the form of his body on demand but slowly lost that ability as he became more and more evil, which is why he appears as a 12 foot tall armored monster. He used to be quite beautiful.

She's reputed throughout Hobbiton to have a foul temper and she's wanted Bilbo's estate for years. 🤣 I can't recommend highly enough that you read the books. Anyway, something that reactors often miss is: Bilbo uses the ring to disappear, then RUNS home, has a 15 MINUTE conversation with Gandalf, and is BARELY able to drop the ring before Gandalf ALMOST touches it. Then the powerful wizard does nothing but murmur to himself, as he stares at the fire for HOURS as the party goes CRAZY over Bilbo's trick, and is only brought out of his trance after Frodo claims the ring and speaks.
    -It is a powerful ring😉

Gandalf is Maia (Spirit) named Olorin created by Eru’s Thought (extensions of Eru Îlluvatar himself whilst they had their own free will and individuality. He essentially got the chance to experience and study other parts of himself through this.) among the other Ainur before the Years of the Lamps roughly 9,000+ years before arriving in Middle-earth. In Valinor he was known as Olórin. He was sent to Middle-earth in human form around the year 1000 of the Third Age. So his many forms had different ages in length of existing. He’s very cool. Another thing is when he arrived in middle earth he was disguised as an elf and lived among them whilst they were unknowing and he became to be known as Mithrandir to the Quendi
However, there is a much longer answer. Like Sauron(former name is Mairon) and the other Istari (the order sent around the same time and of which he was appointed leader but he being who he is and a student of the Vala by the name Nienna and Lorien(Irmo). Gandalf was a Maiar, an angelic spirit created by Eru at the beginning of time and therefor one of the many Ainur who sang the world into being and Eru just helped their creation take shape and basically stated “behold YOUR creation” and basically what happens in that world goes sort of preordained as by that song eons ago so really only the ages after Dagor Dagorath will truly be an age that isn’t full of strife and sadness and longing.
Also. These lamps are what were before even the two trees. These were Giant mountains but also like light houses but housing a great power but it may have also been where two special Maia lived that helped in the creation in the sun and moon after melkor With eldrich terror Ungoliant killed the trees, so yea Arien is the Maia who basically exists with the sun and her brother and or lover of sorts is the one who wanders with and guides the moon.

A note about Gandalf's fall scene that the Cinematography kinda flubbed portraying until the last moment was that the goblins were still shooting at them and if any of them had run back to grab gandalf they'd have likely been pincushioned by arrows. they dragged the moment out to make it look like more time was passing than actually was and so it made it look like everyone was just kinda standing around waiting for him to get back up or fall.

Aye the Adatptaion was not compleately faithfull but such is the differnce between words on a page to picture on a screen. Peter jackson made a choice as a film director to make changes but his focusd was to to always convey the emotional impact as best he could. As such the Film focused on the emotion of the scene rather than the description of the scene.
this is a common compromise made in adaptations. I would hope that people consider this kind of artisitic choice in adaptaions from a book to a Screen as what works in book form does not always work in moivie form.
Still all things consdiered Jakson's adaptation is one of the best. It paid homage to the books while making it work on screen. Not an easy task.

    About the other Rings:
They were created under the influence of the Dark Lord Sauron and he put a kind of magic into them. When he made the One, it was designed to allow him to control everyone who wore the others, but it didn't work because the Elves made theirs in secret and then hid them, and the Dwarves didn't fall to the control of Sauron. They only really worked on humans.
After Sauron was destroyed in a flood (he is actually a supernatural angel or godlike being who can reincarnate himself) the Ring was bound to him and corrupted almost everyone who had it.

Since Sauron (the guy in armour in the prologue) helped create the rings with help from the elves (they were decieved), he put a portion of his malice, his soul if you will, in each ring. Not the Elven ones, they made them without his help. When he made the One Ring, it connected to the other rings, influencing the bearer. The Dwarves, naturally greedy and liking of shiny things, became greedier...and became horders. Not useful for Sauron and his Middle Earth conquering goals. Men, however, desire power over gold, and that is what Sauron wanted. They became the Ringwraiths.
The One Ring corrupts everyone...EVERYONE. Gandalf knew this and didn't even touch it. Same for Galadriel. It didn't affect Aragorn because de doesn't desire power, but Boromir does, in the case to save his city and country. The Hobbits however generally want peace and quiet and food and growing things. The Ring has a hard time corrupting a race that generally doesn't want power or gold. That's why Bilbo held it as long as he did without changing too much. Same for Frodo.

One comment on the Council of Elrond, when Frodo says, "I will take it." You commented, "Oh, Gandalf didn't want that to happen." But, it's actually the opposite.
Gandalf was VERY worried about all of the arguing going on, he knew that no one there could be trusted to carry the ring and not eventually be corrupted. That look on his face when Frodo says, "I will take it."... the "slow blink and sigh" that Gandalf does wasn't him being disappointed. It was him being relieved, because he knew in that moment that Frodo had just basically saved the world. (He wanted Frodo to take the ring, but he wasn't going to force him to do it, Gandalf knew that Frodo had to recognize the risks and agree to accept the burden willingly). So, it played out just how Gandalf wanted it to.

The other rings are of some use, but mostly of use to the Dark Lord himself. The 9 for Men are carried by the Nazgul. Of the 7 rings made for the Dwarf Lords, 3 are in the possession of Sauron already, and the other 4 were destroyed by dragons. The 3 crafted for the Elves were being used by their respective owners. Narya The Ring of Fire was in the possession of Gandalf, Galadriel carried Nenya the Ring of Water, and Elrond wore Vilya the Ring of Air. They were largely kept hidden and could not be used until Sauron no longer had the One Ring. Their powers were of healing, restoration, and preservation, so they weren't offensive weapons to be used in a war anyway.

Sauron fell and became evil many thousands of years before the events of this movie, but Gandalf and Saruman stayed good, and were sent to earth in the form of humans to help the humans, Hobbits and Elves fight against Sauron.
Gandalf told Frodo not to tempt him because if he was corrupted by the Ring, he could become the next Dark Lord, as evil and powerful as Sauron. He didn't want to do that to the world, so he resisted it.
