  • Only a few months after the release of the well-received VX I and VX II, Vox has unveiled the latest evolution of its Valvetronix line: the VT20X, VT40X and VT100X.
    All of the combos feature Vox's new modelling engine with VET (Virtual Element Technology), which aims to emulate individual components of original amp circuits, while a multi-stage Valvetronix valve preamp offers bias and class A/AB adjustments for realistic amp sounds.
    Here, we take you through all 11 amp models, plus the amp's effects, bias and class A/AB options, and a few song presets to boot.
    Guitar used: Epiphone Les Paul Custom Pro

    I have had this amp for about a year and a half now. I would call it my first real amp. Sounds great in my bedroom and when I have it too loud I get in trouble. You can feel this amp in the floor but some of the sounds can be a little muddy. It takes time to learn how to dial it in properly. Have used it gigging a couple times and was loud but did kind of get drowned out in the mix. Great amp for the price.

    Good job on this demo keeping a pace that provided viewers with enough time to hear & evaluate the timbres/presets but not stick on any one too long 'noodling' around! I appreciate getting to hear many/most of the effects, too. I really love this little amp and am in need of one as I type this. My trusty old Crate has bitten the dust & my Peavey 50/50 Classic Tube is too hot/loud to run. I've spent months listening/reading reviews, etc. on the leading modelers: Boss Katana, Marshall Code, Blackstar ID Stereo amps, Vox VTs, Fender Mustangs/GTs, and got rid of my Peavey Vypyr VIP 2 40W ASAP almost for free! Some very annoying things about that amp series that I can't believe Hartley Peavey allowed (or would allow...is he retired...still around?) to happen...but then again Peavey has been programming SHARC chips quite a while and there is great potential in the Vypyrs - just not for my 60-year old ass that doesn't want the master vol & bass cranked to 13 on almost every freakin' patch...for 120W Triple XXX metal! Not my generation/thing anymore(!)
    Let's see...what was the subject here? Vox VTX....jeez, they go for less than $150 used now at G.C. in good shape & have a real 12AX7 in 'em. I'm not sure how good the headphone output is for laying down tracks (I believe the USB is for editing only...?). Maybe it's about time for Vox to do a VT V2 model and put some Ins/Outs on the backside....maybe copy the new Katana Stereo link idea as I think 2 of these 40W VTX amps about 10 - 12 feet apart slaved together would be killer!

    I have this amp and its head and shoulders above Marshall's Code, Katana and Mustangs for true authentic tube sound and it has a surprisingly open and "big" amp sound (no boxyness like other small amps) - plus unlike the others of this size you can use the footswitch to make it an 8 channel amp. Prob loud enough for small gigs too, though I only use mine for chilling in the lounge and it sounds incredible at even very low volume. They sound so much better than this demo up close and my Fender Blues Deluxe doesn't get turned on anymore as it sounds crap at low volume. Never used te USB software, its easy enough to manipulate with the knobs.

    I have two Vox in use - Vox VT40X, Vox VT100X. Where the speaker is larger, of course it sounds better. I hardly use preset presets. You can find your settings through the Tone Room. It is very convenient when a footswitch is connected, so whoever is going to buy such a combo amplifier, do not forget about it. Without him, as without hands. Works quite adequately in conjunction with guitar gadgets. Of course, there are downsides, there is no effects loop and no output to external acoustics, but I think this is not significant. I am one hundred percent satisfied with my devices.

      Yes, you see that “power level” knob on the right side? For lack of a better term, that knob adjusts how much juice the amp is actually getting. I've got the VT20X and cleans to medium gain aren't too bad. The thing that kills me about this amp is that when turning the noise reduction off, this is easily the most noisy amp I've had in 18 years. Turn on the noise reduction, and sustained notes get prematurely choked out. That is pretty much my biggest bitch about the amp.

    • @dekzan

      +dekzan
      I traded the Gibson sg faded special for a prs se zach myers, and I'll revisit my remark regarding the amp. I thought initially I had an unusable amp that was noisy beyond belief. Well, the PRS is quiet as the grave with minimal noise on dirty tones and completely quiet on cleans. I thought that the mids were really hollow and weak, but turns out that a change of guitars was the needed fix for this amp. I usually have a fairly neutral eq, with gain and bass being around 2 o'clock and sounds pretty full and pleasing for practice, and really sounds nice and fat when both the volume and power level are up halfway. Still not sold on the effects other than reverb and delay. The overdrive gives a nice added kick on the Orange Rockerverb model. At the end of the day, it is what it is and as a practice amp I'd say that for the price it's pretty good with more useful tones than a lot of modelers out there on the market today. The amp really shines with clean and crunches, and struggles with the heavier and more modern tones with exception to the Orange tone. The recto and User C option sounded way too scooped, even with a mid focused guitar like the PRS and mids cranked just sounded like the cheap amp that it is on those settings. Not a bad amp if expectations are realistic and that's all someone could afford. Honestly I wish this was my first amp to start with, it beats the amp my harmony starter pack came with!

    • @tandreasen100
      @tandreasen100 7 лет назад

      I've noticed that too (on my VT40X), even a lot of the heavier presets have the noise reduction cranked so high that the sustain just trashes the sound.

    Just for the fun of it I put a triode-balanced Tung-sol and a Celestian G10 in this amp. As I put them in together (its quick and painless) I can’t tell which made the difference but it sounds like a much smoother amp. Really expanded the dynamic range. Granted the speaker and tube were half as much as the amp but I really like the sound of this amp. I also have two 100 watt Marshall’s running in stereo, those aren’t going anywhere during the pandemic and they aren’t wife friendly for practice. I thought this would be a quick fix and it was worth it for a knock around amp.
    I play Suhr guitars and they tend to be very “chimey” , so they love the smoother speaker.

I've tried to to take a day off to let my fingers toughen (I haven't played in almost 20 years) but I can't help but pick my axe up and practice. Excuse my doting but the SG Looks so beautiful and it sounds so well with the VT40X I honestly don't care what anyone thinks 😜I just love practising AC/DC songs on it. Its a good amp for people who dont know what to get yet and who dont have a huge pedal collection yet. Obviously it cant compete with higher price segments for tube or solid state amps. Clean sound is below average for the price segment its in. Default Volume settings are at 7-8 when you turn it on. Woke up my flatmates 2-3 times because the plug of my guitar is loose :(
    Thank you to the idiot from vox who thought this was a good idea ...

  • @stoneysdead689
    @stoneysdead689 2 года назад

    It's pretty good- and if you're one of those "must have a tube in it" type guys- it's got on in the preamp so, calm down- the sky is firmly intact. That said- the Line 6 Catalyst I think has the modeling market cornered man- very difficult to beat it unless you upgrade to the HX Stomp which is not cheap- at all. Those things are much more substantial and involved than I thought- I just played through one this morning- wow. Endless presets- and they're all named after like famous songs or tones that you recognize like "Run Like Hell" or "Brown" - the brown sound of course being the Eddie Van Halen, Peavey 5150 thing and the other being a delayed, cleaner tone often used by Floyd. Or, you can edit the existing effects or just build one of your own from scratch- awesome unit. The only issue- it's not cheap, and then you have to turn around and buy a cab or PA to go with it. The Catalyst has all the same effects as the HX stomp but- no presets, you have to build your own presets. Plus it's a combo amp so it's ready to play out of box, nothing else required. It has all the software editing stuff, you can connect it to your pc- but you can also do all that stuff manually with just the amp. I like that because Spark and Yamaha users often complain about the app not working or having to be updated. I'm sure the Catalyst app will be the same but, you can do everything without it if you need to. Plus, you can connect a powered head or preamp so- I can connect an Orange Tiny Terror or my Blackstar HT drive and get an authentic tube driven tone if the sim isn't good enough to suit me. And it's a 4-channel audio interface that meshes with most DAWs.

      +Duncan Earley This does sound shite (honest). It looks like a great amp for the jobbing pro muso who plays a ton of covers every night to the brain dead general public on a cruise ship / working man's club with a bunch of other musicians, but for what they'll be charging for this you are always going to be better off from a tonal purist point of view with a proper valve amp and the Blackstar range is the obvious competition. I don't work for them but have one and the price / performance ratio on their stuff is astonishing.
      Bear in mind that the hate in this thread is coming from guitar players and we're very fussy about what we play :-)

      Er, I was agreeing with you.
      An amp with this sort of versatility would be ideal for a covers band I've just started ... but I just don't like the sound of it. It's gutless. Had high hopes when I opened up the video ... but was disappointed and will stick to basics ie small valve amps and a decent PA. IMHO Blackstar make great small valve amps with modern features at a good price.
