Deer Mouse Gets Trapped. Review and test of the Atomic Barbie Rat Trap, Medium Animal Humane Live Cage. There are two versions I found on Amazon, small and medium. Not everything fits into the small, so I went to the medium and glad I did. Watch the video and let me know if you have any questions, I used a wild deer mouse to test the trap. For bait, I used Tomcat Mouse Attractant and Yogies from ecotrition (yogies are marketed to pet enthusiasts for rats). I have found that wild rats will ignore yogies, but wild mice definitely go for them. I paid $23.12 for this medium trap on Amazon, seller was Atomic Barbie. Atomic Barbie sent two e-mails following the sale, reminding me to leave a "five star review" on Amazon, I made this video instead. I prefer video over written reviews thanks.

the slow motion vid is amazing.. the fact that the mouse went sideways sensing the only exit before touching the trigger just blew my mind!!!.... thanks for sharing !!
Thank you!
Now I understand and appreciate why these traps are so long. During the slow motion, it's amazing how the mouse knew exactly where to turn under those kind of reflexes.
+Michael Vuong You know it Michael.. if this trap were just two inches shorter, this mouse would have propelled itself through the door before it finished closing. I'm putting up a second, much shorter video just to display that in greater detail. The mouse, as soon as it senses a trigger, rockets towards the entry point... I was amazed by that ability.
THANK YOU !!! I BOUGHT A NEW ONE WITH NO INSTRUCTIONS.... IT'S SIMPLE WITH YOUR VIDEO... GOOD JOB !!!
Glad it helped
its like he expected it and bounced to the entrance -- they are smart....
"SOB!! I knew it!!"

Wow! That mouse has some good reflexes.
They are masters at emptying traps without springing them, now you know why.
to bad it get caught and eventually died afterwards and it brings me pure happiness XD
Thank you for such a GREAT video review! I agree the construction looks shoddy and weak, but I love that you show how well it works in spite of the craftsmanship. I have ordered two of them (they will arrive tonight). Wish me luck. Seeing how fast that mouse was, and yet, he wasn't fast enough to escape, made my day. I hope it works on a rat I saw scurry across my patio yesterday. Thanks again for such a complete review.
So glad you like it... rats are soooo smart that I really get a kick out of figuring out how to catch them. I know you will have fun with these traps, my only problem is that I've run out of rodents to catch... I guess that's the point in the first place.
Rodents gone; great problem to have! I am looking forward to having your problem and becoming rat free. I am worried that the rat, if not caught, may figure out how to use our doggy door--that could be a much bigger problem. I hope I can nip this in the bud. There is construction in the area and I had to catch three gophers. The rats are the newest invaders. Great job! I hope you keep your "problem!"
Shoddy and weak? It’s for catching mice/rats not raccoons !
Cool trap...good thing that the door closed fast and the trap was as long as it was...didn’t know mice were that quick!
File the end of the metal wire that goes through the loop to an angle and smooth. It still stays in the loop easily but slips off quickly when something touches the trigger.
Thank you for the demo!! I’m setting my trap now! Using 2 different cage traps. I actually used aloe Vera in both cages and some dog food because that’s what the rat was eating. I will load the video in a few days please come see me results. I hope it is a good as yours. Thank you again.
This thing is a fantastic tool..I'm reading people here are complaining about build quality? Please this damn trap costs less than 20 bucks! It's practical 💯 effective and the build quality is just fine. You want build quality?..ok go buy the fancy one that looks all pretty painted then find out it doesn't work for doodly squat!
Currently have a rat visitor... will be testing this out on that rascal TONIGHT.. wish me luck, they are very savvy

Wow the reaction time on that mouse is amazing
you said it!
.....and with all its adrenaline -- all that entrapment it left not a single calling card! So interesting to see the Very impressive reaction time.
indeed +==
I've owned one of these traps for over a year now. I tell you what it was the best 5$ spent. I've managed to catch all the mice at home and even took it to work where i caught many more. I'm sure I am well over 100 catches by now. I use peanut butter every time I set it and it never fails. If you own one of these traps and the trap doesn't go off then you might be setting it wrong. You have to make sure that the rod that goes through the loop on top isnt inside the loop to far. Make sure the rod is barely inside the loop right on the edge. This will make the pressure pad alot more sensitive to touch.
I have 4 traps, peanut doesn't work, but beead with sunflower oil attracts all the rods!
The trap itself is almost perfect, but I'm using slight modification to catch cautious rats - I put a metal bar on the trigger so the only way to sniff the bait is to step up on the trigger. Some rats don't even touch the trigger but got caught! And yes - this trap holds rat without problems!
Thanks for posting...used video to try to repair mine which got damaged the very first time I used it...appreciated
Oh, glad it helped. These are fantastic designs that have been poorly constructed, someone somewhere will make them of better materials I hope. AND, I hope they provide them in all sizes!
Yes. Mine had an interference fit because the door was warped and didn't allow the slide lock to engage.
Gosh, that mouse nearly beat the cage door closing. So fast.
it failed and I like it XD
The fastest mouse I've ever seen in my entire lifeeee. WTH is this😨
Agreed, I use one similar, fantastic trap
I too am amazed by its speed and reflexes if they weren't so cunning and dangerous in carrying diseases they are kind of cute.
Thank you! I have to do a humane mouse trap for my technology project. This was really helpful!
Oh, that's great, I hope your project is a success!
Maybe placing a slick plastic base would slow him down , just a thought ! Well done ✅ !
That mouse is no joke. Rats and mice have gotten smarter and smarter as we have been at battle with them.
This cage really work great
It does indeed, thanks for commenting :)
This somehow showed that mice are really the smartest pests!
aaahhhhhhh i just love this video not because of trap but i have seen the mouse relaxes amazing
Thanks!
I bought on on ebay for about 11.00 bucks but there were no instructions. Thank you. My cat recently past and he was the one who took care of the mice. Fortunately no rats.
Great slow mo!
This trap works great for rats! I'm two for two so far. I use peanut butter for bait.
Thanks for this video. Was hoping you'd show us how to safely open the trap and release the mouse.
Just slide the hold-bar up, and tilt the door open and they will run right out.
Thanks, actually caught a 'possum last night, thinking we had mice and rats.@@FrederickDunn
I was thinking about filing a groove at the end of th3 rod!
Great video! I just ordered one cage.
If you play it in slowmotion, you can see how the mouse reacted first and did a long leap, so close though, almost beat the door lol
to bad it failed XD
My trap was not catching the chipmunks I wanted to get rid of. They would go in and trip the trap but push their way out! After watching this video I realized the slide lock had an interference fit with the cheap metal door. It did not drop down and secure the door. I removed the interference fit and the trap works great now.
I'm so glad it helped you out John! I wish someone would make a great quality version of this trap and I'd buy it... still the absolute BEST. Thanks for sharing!
Very good review. I just found this video 3 years later and I am impressed! All I need now is a way to gas the rats to death I catch. I can't stand blood and gore and don't want to move the rats to bug someone else's yard.
I received 4 of these traps form Amazon recently. 2 large and 2 small.
I was surprised to find the quality of the traps has apparently improved
since you reviewed them here 4 years ago.
I am actually using these traps to dispose of starlings that have been
wreaking havoc at my platform bird feeders. Starlings, unlike other birds,
will eat cat food so I place these small traps inside a much larger enclosed
platform feeder. I place the food they don't want at the front of the trap,
and then I place the cat food inside a tiny container on top of the spring
mechanism. I also cut some thin plexiglass just small enough to fit inside
the trap and cover the bottom of the trap, to prevent the bird food from
falling out the bottom. I screwed a couple of small cups to the plexiglass
so that the cardinals wouldn't spill the safflower seeds I put out for them.
That goes in the front of the trap.
What is the name of the trap?
sahah
I bought two. Great trap.
good video.......I like the electric shock traps.........and the PVC cannon traps... and the drowning traps.
Lots of options out there for sure!!!
LOL best line ever. You can decide later. Scary but neseccary
You did a great job with this video ! Love how you gave us all the dimensions.
Excellent critique and analysis with almost no wasted time in this video.
My birdfeeders are being over run with a horrible invasive species known as starlings and
I would like to get 3 or 4 of these traps. But I don't want to chance killing songbirds.
I needed the dimensions because my platform feeders have 4 sides to them.
I was wondering how high that round bar is in the air and I think 10" is going to be OK.
I never had a problem with starlings until this year and I can't figure out what has changed.
I wonder if I should get the smaller trap and if that trap would be a little more sensitive (?)
I also wonder if this trap is made in China and still available here in the US since
the US is boycotting them (?)

I have this trap. A medium sized rat tore it's wires from the sides. It does not have sufficient strength.
Somewhere I read that mice were in the chain of our evolution. That we share a lot of DNA with them. Not sure if it is true but they are certainly smart. Worth keeping them alive and releasing them elsewhere.
We evolved, millions of years back from a shrew like ancestor.
This was after the void the dinosaur mass extinction left. This gave a chance to us mammals to evolve.
This is just common trap in Malaysia. Yes,the rat for sure can't ran. But it only can catch one at a time.
One at a time is all I need :)
F**k that was dam fast with lightning speed reflexes almost escaped, had to watch in slow motion ! ! ! I just caught one in my house with a simple hook type :) ! ! ! It was a nuisance for the last 2 months . . FIRST BLOOD . .
They are extremely fast indeed and I have a new version of this cage to test out in the coming weeks. Deer mice are moving inside as the snow comes...
Want to extend the bait tray and make it so they have to stand on it to get the food, any good rat won't touch it and still get the food
Just remember that if you extend the trigger plate, they are closer to the entrance when it goes off. Smart rats won't be caught.
@@FrederickDunn I love the smart rats, the ones that don't want to get caught, they're my favourite, get shot as they try outsmarting the trap 👌 nothing escapes the night scope and cctv for times they come to play ,
The tray doesn't need to be much longer another inch with a low ofset acts as a lower step then,
Very nice mouse trap
Grey squirrels can really tear these traps up if you leave a trapped
squirrel in them for too long a period. I had to repair the door of my trap
because I was not expecting to catch a squirrel at night and by the time
I woke up in the morning, a trapped squirrel had very nearly chewed his
way out.
Ya, not very well built fo squirrels.
@@FrederickDunn
I haven't heard from you in awhile and I hope you are OK.
I recently discovered a way to prevent grey squirrels from
entering these traps when I use them with peanut butter outside.
I cut up a 3 foot section of plastic white gutter guard from Home
Depot and made it the same size as the opening, so it fits tightly.
Then I attach the plastic piece of gutter guard to the top of the
trap in the front with a couple of electrical ties which act as a
fulcrum for the gutter guard to swing open.
I cut a small hole at the bottom & middle of the gutter guard
so that mice can enter but grey squirrels can not.
The trap continues to work the exact same way.
I just greatly reduced the size of the opening, to prevent grey squirrels
from entering.

These types of traps were under $15, and now they are around $25. The construction has not gotten any better. The concept is great, but don't ever expect them to last. The materials are the lowest possible strength because the wire screen material is too easy to bend. I own a similar type, but the material was stronger. After catching at least 25 mice, rats and even squirrels along my backyard fencing over the years, I still had to make frequent repairs to keep it operational. I will not buy this brand unless you are skilled and patient to fix it frequently. My trap has two doors, one at each end and it's much stronger. Strong enough to catch adult squirrels.
If you have the skills and heavier gauge cage-wire, you can make your own versions. Once you have the concept and can make a sensitive trigger, they work very well. I agree, they really needed to upgrade the hardware cloth. RATS can bend them apart, but mice are still not strong enough to do anything to it.
excellent video. I am seeing now I regret getting a trap like this, that mouse almost made it out before the door closed. I think I would prefer getting a cage that is longer and sturdier. I did buy a variety of traps for mice/rats with mixed results (including a snap trap that has a plastic tunnel system, but the mice or rats never went for it). I didn't want to get a live trap because I have no where to legally release the mice/rats, with cameras everywhere now I am sure I am going to have trouble finding a spot to release them. But the other traps aren't working so I figured I would try the cage instead.
You can cut it in the middle and extend it yourself. Easy to do. I agree, a longer trap works better :)
If you've got a pail or a bucket that the trap will fit inside, just fill it with water and your "release" issue is solved! 👍 All I ever use now are "live" traps. Yup, I catch 'em live, but i don't release them that way. 😉
I got one just like it but my door is slow as hell! I hope I catch something.
Very nice
Great video! It's funny I just got the cry same trap from Amazon for 12euro! Yours it's overpriced. And tonight I am catching the mouse in the kitchen Which troubles me a lot. Wish me good luck. Ps: the slow motion it's great... These little trouble makers are fast as hell 😱
excelente video 👍👍👍
The latch that keeps the door open on mine got broken and lost after a squirrel got in it. Ideas how to fix the mechanism from the food holder tray to the door open pin. It looks simple but my mind can’t figure out how to fix it
This trap only costs RM10 in Malaysia about US2.50 :) and the workmanship is much better. We have a spring as well for fast action.
That's fantastic, please feel free to post a link to it here! Is it available where viewers could buy one?
these do work well.

Btw I'm buying one this week. I'll give an update once I caught one. There's big fella in ma house. I'm pretty sure he's not a chef. Most likely, he's the customer..

Thanks help a lot :D
Also I caught a mouse yesterday lmao!
After u got the mice, use hot water wash cage
I dip my cages in bleach water.
So how would other mouse get trapped, is it designed for only 1 mouse?
Yes, it's designed to capture just one mouse at a time. You'd have to set multiple traps to get several mice in a single evening.
it is alot cheaper on the Geek app for 9 or less depending on size or by seller
Cool... thank you for sharing, I hope someone checks it out :)
Frederick Dunn welcome
i have this trap, it works a few times then the spring is not strong enough to hold the mouse in the cage, the cage now i worthless
mine are still working great even after all these years. I'd get another one.
Why didn't you show how to release the mouse?
You lift the drop bar at the end, and push down on the long bar to open the end. I apologize, I thought it would be easy to figure out.
I rent a house with a mice living inside the walls .... i think this mice is more clever than me I've got glue traps everywhere I eliminate any possible entrance inside the house but he can still can get into the kitchen somehow....probubly somewhere behind the kitchen fittings at the bottom. .... I got 7 glue traps but he don't go into them I've got 3 traditional traps into the kitchen but he managed to eat the food without traps to close lol .... its impossible to eliminate him 🤣🤣🤣 this trap looks great probably will buy one of this to see how it goes
You will prevail... this trap is inescapable if you set it correctly :)
I need for my yard catch wild mouse boy and girl rise put in cage
Where do you purchase these cage traps online?
The link is in the video description.
The price is shocking you can buy that in South East Asian countries in just 2 to 3 US$..
YEP, I live in the Philippines & bought one nearly the same about 6 years ago for 200 Pesos(about 4 dollars). I've lost count of how many rats I have caught & drowned.
Would the extra large work on mice and rats
Yes! Larger is better in my opinion, what matters is that the trigger is sensitive enough for mice. For rats, I suggest locking the trap open and letting the rat get used to the trap being there and eating from the plate with no triggering, once it's confident, set it to spring and you'll have your rat. I also highly recommend using a trail camera to observe what is actually visiting the trap and you'll know how many you're dealing with and how large they are. All a rat has to do is see another rat get trapped and it's been educated to avoid. ==
@@FrederickDunn thanks for the reply how would I avoid educating the rats
@@Jus4ya The more I learn about and observe the Norway rats we have, the more I ramp up my methods. None this year, but in the past I had one particular large male that I spent 12 weeks going after. He foiled one trap after another and often brought young rats that instantly went into the cage as he ran off. Creepy doesn't begin to describe that.
I want these one better than big size
How much cost tell me
There is a link in the video description.
Theres this small rat which drove me crazy.
Took us 3 weeks to catch.
Our trap is ineffective (big bars) and it got off a glue trap.
Combined the two while wrapping the cage's bars with plastic wrap and so much tie rods
It got caught
Almost escaped when we drowned it
Died while its head was stuck outside the cage door that was littered with sharp tie rods
Small but far more clever than a bigger rat. It's the size of your deer mouse
Never had a lasting rat pursuit longer than this
Smaller mice are harder to catch tbh

Ive had mine set up 4 nights and nothing yet!! Saw a mouse in the bathroom, and one in the kitchen. I feel sick thinking of the filth. They won't go in these cages. I'm not giving up. Plus the next nightmare will be lifting the cage with a mouse inside, all the way to the park, on foot a far away park. As I want it out of my town. 😰😰😰😱😱
Try tootsie rolls as bait.
Frederick Dunn Thank you. But what is tootsie rolls. I'm in the UK London.
@@paulaslife3781 Make sure that you are not touching the traps with your bare hands: they can smell your scent and it can put them off. Also make sure that it's a mouse and not a rat. Rats are a LOT bigger than mice, and they are also a lot more cautious than mice. Rats are neophobic, which means they are scared of new things, and so will naturally avoid your traps even if there's food on them.
Make sure to put a lot of food around/inside the trap so that they will be less likely to ignore it, and leave the trap there for a few days with bait, but dont set it, so that they get used to it.
After you see that they're eating the bait consistently, especially the bait that's on the bait hook/pedal, then you can set the trap and you should be able to trap them.
Handle the traps with gloves, and maybe also clean it if you know you've already handled it significantly with your hands.
Some good bait to use are sunflower seeds and peanut butter.
All the best
Thanx for the vid. I was going to get the Small thinking it would be big enough. I have a VERY large mouse though. Way bigger than the mouse you caught. Do you think it will be too small?
It's large enough for any mouse species, but not rats, if you have a rat, it's going to get away or not go in in the first place...
I use a trap with the same dimensions and have caught rats in it. I live in the Philippines and it is manufactured locally. Has a slightly different trigger system, not very sesitive. I think I will change it to the trigger system in the vid. Thanks for posting this so I could study the system it uses.

No, but it's very good and versatile. I have larger clunkier cameras with better lenses, but the Sony is a grab and go unit that I really enjoy.
thanks, I think that's why camcorders are still so popular.
you're welcome and agreed
Good video Fred. Deer mice are native to North America, rats are not. I recently bought a similar couple of live-traps, one for otters, raccoons and that size animal, and a smaller one like yours for rats and mink. I would never release a live rat as that would be like releasing a diseased thing into our midst or into the forest where it would prey on our native birds and small mammal species.

Hi Matthew, they definitely need to offer a much LARGER version than this one. The bad news is that Rats are so smart, that the ones that experienced it and escaped, won't be going back into one of these. Outsmarting a rat isn't easy. If you find a large rat sized version of this trap, please let us all know :)
kaha mile ga
I had saw that mouse trap at an Asian grocery store for 10.00$
@PJ 74 Yeah I got the same one it works you just need good bait.catch I catch them and then I put them to sleep
What if that was a slow mouse? Like anything else, mice vary in speed and reaction time, and that mouse came within a hairbreadth of getting out. Couple that with the fact that you took some care to make sure the trigger mechanism was on its absolute quickest setting, and it looks like in the real world, with less careful owners, a fair amount of mice will escape.
You are correct, if it had been on the normal setting, it probably wouldn't have triggered at all. It's very common to find traps without bait and no mouse when tripped. The gravity closing systems (without springs) have that frequent problem. Mice are often extremely agile, rats are almost impossible.

You have to ask yourself, why you're watching live catch traps if you're not interested in them? Depending on where you reside, you could have higher cases. And I am talking about you are not taking me as hostage for listening to your favorite music. Became a f* plague and terrifies due to youtube's autoplaying them.
Weird on videos when killing animals anyways.
You are right, this cage is overpriced.
In my opinion rather a toy to catch ONE tiny mouse you did or a hamster for fun.
Bigger rats will have bigger parts of their bodies outside anyway.
The bucket trap does not work on rats a lot of "wannbee DJ's" promising here though.
So I am thinking of a trap which catches more than one. Similar to those fishermen using
to catch lobster and crabs. One where the one-way entry will open wide smooth on the way in and obstructs the way back entirely. Kinda springy hose made of loose nails with sharp endindings on finish. Not to be felt on the way in.
I gonna destroy them all eventually because they killed my ducklings leaving them back concaved. My kids found them. That was it for me with mercy, vegetarian though.
Shot a few rats after, we all felt having revenged the victims.
thanks
