      With a fully hardened head would there be any additional risk of it cracking if you use the back of the axe to drive tent stakes?

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  2 месяца назад +3

      It's a differential temper, I didn't mention that properly.

    • @ThornWoodForge
      @ThornWoodForge 2 месяца назад +5

      @@farstrider79 top question!
      After the heat treatment process of normalising, tempering and hardening and then we reheat the poll and eye of each axe individually with an oxy propane torch. This bleeds the heat into the poll & eye making them softer and more springy. This ensures you can confidently use the poll to hammer in wood stakes/pegs!
      The reason we heat treat the whole head is because no matter how many times you sharpen the axe after decades of use. That edge retention will still be the same.
      The goal ultimately is to craft tools that you'll pass down for generations if maintained well!

    You talk a big game but based on the way you are talking to your drone and GoPro, you really are craving the warm “embrace” of Bigfoot, to remind you we are social animals.

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness

      My social activities normally consist of having afternoon tea with several plastic manikins with drawn on monobrows. They look up to me, you know.
      I do enjoy my solitude in the wilderness, mainly because life outside of that isn't solitary. If Bigfoot actually shows up, I will be sorry, I'm sure 😆

    14:22 with reference to your previous video. This is just a sort of thing that wouldn’t have made the edit for 99% of the other overly sincere ‘bushcraft’ channels. I think what I hate about so many other people who use the platform adopt a tone that is extremely preachy and holier than thou. The Bushcraft and outdoorsey scene is already full of people who think they are right about absolutely everything, your humility and humour make your content so relatable as it is far closer to reality than 99% of all the other rubbish out there. I actually think if ray meres did RUclips it would be far more like your content, it’s only because it was on the BBC he/it had to be somewhat professional. Keep going, Mike, the content is as good as ever, never doubt yourself.

      The bushcraft and wilderness social media instructors cannot be seen to 'not know' sadly. The pressure is on the set the standard of 'how to do something'. I was often told on my old channel that I had to strike a ferro rod like Dave Canterbury, and I replied "his method didn't work for me". Apparently this was the only way to do it and I was doing it wrong.
      I like to think we are all in it together, sharing our experiences and taking comfort in that were all imperfectly perfect. I'm getting bigfoot deep now, I need to pull out!
      Thank you for the comment and for what you have said! Thanks for watching also!

    Hi Mike.
    Glad to hear you are feeling better 👍
    All your videos are great. But this one was amazing! Had a little bit of everything.
    And the montage is one I watch over and over.
    Slide out solar. Such a cool idea! You did a great job with the interior sleeping setup. Different from my own but also similar. Works really well with your existing setup. I think you nailed it.
    Mike look up deepsleep solo camping mat. I have two of those. I bought the jk version. Two of them fit perfectly inside my xj. But I did modify my front seats so they tilt forward towards the dash for extra room. They are not cheap at all. But contoured to the shape of the Jeep. 5” thick self inflating memory foam. And have an adjustable air valve. The quality is excellent. But $$. 😢
    I’m looking forward to this Friday to go out and sleep inside my xj.
    Mike to help with condensation. And I guess privacy. I’m using a frost guard exterior windshield cover. The fabric kind with elastic straps that go around the mirrors.
    Stops the windshield from getting so cold and helps with condensation. And makes the Jeep darker inside if that’s something you’re after.
    If I get time this week, hopefully I get my ventilation fan setup installed in my rear side window aluminum panel.
    Looking forward to seeing how you’re front locker and freshly siped tires do in the snow!
    And not having so much weight high up as you have already said. Makes everything feel more stable.
    Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  2 месяца назад +2

      Thanks, mate. I'm happy with how it turned out, although like any new build, it just needs some tweaking. I think the ventilation fan will help a bit with conditions, although I'm a bit dubious about akinv out the back window.
      I will take a look at those mats you mentioned. I have found one that's working, but it's definitely worth seeing what's out there.
      I will see what I can do with the insulation on the windows. I have a few things, but it's going to take me a while to get this dialed in.
      Thanks for watching, and I hope you enjoyed your time out in the jeep!

    Nicely done Mike. I too have ended up sleeping in the back. I'm a stunted-growth person so my Discovery 1 can accommodate my 5'8" nicely between the rear door and the front passenger seat slid right forward (aluminium platform rests on the 40% rear seat folded down) Means I can make faces at Big Foot through the window from a place of safety. If he is really determined I can slide off the platform onto the 60% rear seat, get dressed, and shuffle into the front seat and away....

    Nice overnight. I always have a bit of angst in the back country about the vehicle starting in the morning. By the way before the Bic there was the Cricket. I suppose it was harder for people to know if someone was talking about a lighter, a bug or a game.

    I'm glad you are going the in-vehicle route for sleeping, as that is what I do in my D1. It will be interesting to see how you deal with condensation in cold weather. The previous owner of my D1 took it to the Arctic Circle, on a tour, and sleeping inside caused the roof to rust with the condensation. The front wing also got chewed up by an angry Reindeer.
    I've heard that a candle lantern can reduce condensation.

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  2 месяца назад +1

      I'm keen to see how it goes just because it keeps the jeep as I intended it, capable, lighter and kind of a jack of all trades but a master of none. Condensation will be a challenge but I think the diesel heater and an extractor fan would sort it. But i'm not sure how comfortable I am with a heater on all the time.
      Thanks for watching.

      MCQ started with this kind of humour, although it wasn't quite the same as I was younger. But I used to get so many messages from parents saying how they were so happy they could sit their kids in front of the channel and "not be worried." I just stopped with the saltire humour.

    I am new to your channel and it's just the type of video I needed to see with regards sleeping setup. I have been ground tenting and since I camp by myself setting up camp is time consuming. I looked at moving to rooftop tent but in reason days I changed my mind to sleeping inside but was not sure how that would work out. Thanks for insight and ideas.

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness

      Thanks for watching and welcome. I've been using roof tents for the last five years, but there seems to be more advantages to sleeping in the vehicle I think. Less weight, less cost, setup and take down time, no wind noise and flapping material, warmer and it feels more like a bed.
      There are some disadvantages like headroom (vehicle specific), getting changed in the morning and condensation. I don't think they are enough to make me want a roof tent again though.
      Anyway hopefully it works out for you and thanks again!

    Hey, I love the videos, especially the drone shots. I am not sure if you're willing to share, but what type/brand of drone is that? I am looking at getting one, but I had a lot of trouble With a DJI from a long time ago, but I am sure things have changed.

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  2 месяца назад +1

      Thanks for watching! I use a DJI Mini 3 Pro. Its a pretty good drone with decent obstacle detection. You can fool it into tracking you in front if you corridor it in-between trees. It wont be able to get around you because it detects the trees and stays in front. When flying low in front I have to disable obstacle detection and fly it manually because its flying too low.
      Overall its been very reliable. I use it on Pro mode with a range of CPL/ND filters to take away glare and give motion blur when moving. Its a very impressive little drone and not crazy expensive for professional results.
      You could get the Mini 4 Pro as it has side sensors for obstacles. Its a step up!
      Hopefully this helps and thanks for watching.

    Had to watch to see how you chose to platform, though I tend to see how you've done the other aspects to your XJ. Being about 6' 2" and with a bit of difficulty moving about, back of my '87 XJ gets used by two of us. I run a bit lighter than most as it's do easy to restock and refuel anywhere here in NW Washington State, but I tend to use the highland streams to keep things cold when needed. Your early released stuff as well as those who hike the Pacific Crest Trail keeps the thought of, "Do I really need it?" and mindful of what and how I see others do things. Though I am considering a small trailer for battery, fridge and possibly solar combo. It will also need to have/use the same tire that's on the XJ, but to also carry a spare. Very nice ax, as I am still trying to find a replacement for my double edged one that got stolen. Though I do keep a small hatchet onboard as well as a 5lb hammer if need, as well as a small foldable bow saw. Curious as to see how the second Renix turns out as I am following. Well done Sir.

I found out about it because of the author of the book Dark Calories was on some health podcasts. I don't know how the food market is in the U.K. but these 8 oils are in almost everything. I highly recommend you check it out, at least listen to a podcast the author has been in.
