  • Interceptor 006 (located in Rio Las Vacas, Guatemala) prevented 1.4 million kg (3.1 million lbs) of trash from flowing into the Gulf of Honduras and the Caribbean Sea.
    All this trash came in just a few hours with the first flush of the 2024 rainy season, and it took us six days to extract it - in 272 truckloads.
    A huge effort from our crew in Guatemala and significant impact on plastic emissions into the oceans.

      They need to stop the upstream dump from polluting the river and prevent the small towns along it from dumping directly into the river. That would stop the bulk of it.

      @maisielb1517 Месяц назад +5

      This stops it from ending up in the ocean where its insanely more difficult to collect and it can cause more damage to marine life. There will likely always be trash that makes its way into waterways. This is simply the start of addressing that problem. And is only one piece of a much larger puzzle.

    • @violetscreaming
      @violetscreaming Месяц назад +2

      @@violetscreaming to put it simply, you cant.
      They would need entire countries rubbish collection and processing to be overhauled or put into place.
      Even with that, places like uk, france, the us have all proven that regardless of such systems, and fines in place, people will still always litter or fly tip. Nothing will ever fully stop it from happening.
      So things like this will probably become a part of our lives simply to keep on top of the problem we created.

    • @B.Harper7
      @B.Harper7 Месяц назад

      @violetscreaming There needs to be a plastic tax on the creators of plastic products.
      At an announced future date, the tax on purchasing NEWLY CREATED plastic goods needs to be enacted.
      A year later, the tax extends to ALL plastic products (products with more that 10% plastic/plastic pieces)
      We will never be rid of plastic for the time being, but it needs to be so expensive (with that tax money going to clean up) that using recyclable glass will go back to being the norm.
      People can learn to be a teensy bit more careful with what they are holding, and BONUS- people with access issues due to not being able to utilize plastic, will suddenly be able to do things, open containers, etc... from the changes it would enact.
      A standardized set of sizes so to speak for lids, will make it easy for a container/lid opener to be formulated.
      You can't create glass without humans at least overseeing, so yaayyyy job creation.
      Reuse programs can be created for the sanitization and refilling of jars/ containers, which will require humans to control the machines and production.
      Not to mention the clean up crews like Boyan's will have money, people, ideas, and support poured in.
      Will it take lots of time and money?
      Yup, but our biggest issues and literally how we got here: Lobbying.
      We have agreed as a collective to ignore the job of criminally bribing politicians and lawmakers, and let them lie that it's "part of the process".
      When we oust the people whose entire job is to pay people to make the wrong decision- the one that hurts it's countries people and environment.

    • @B.Harper7
      @B.Harper7 Месяц назад

      So I'd say yes to all of the people paying.
      Starting with the plastic companies and the huge companies that use their products, slowly making its way on a predetermined schedule down to a tax on plastic period.
      That tax money goes to cleanup, support for the environs rise, and hey- just maybe we won't be the fifth to last generation on the planet!!

      @maisielb1517 Agreed!! If we all can send in ideas that we have and regarding marketing, expansion on the Web, content ideas OR like $2 - 5, that could really help.
      Sure, Boyan still has to record all the content, but if people can volunteer "what they know to do", maybe they could have a 'team of ten' for each different section of the job responsibilities. For example:
      He uploads the raw footage to the group, the volunteers who can help would text in the chat what they are doing.
      They send it to the next group, so on and so forth.
      If people are reliable and don't overthink it, the system could work really well, without burning out the volunteers.
      And I saw you on one of their other videos 😄 hi buddy!!! 💖✨️

    Thats bc in certain regions of the world there are no trash pickups so people just toss it and the government there hasnt put in place any way to dispose of the trash. So it will just continue to pile up never ending until someone there puts a system into place.

    The problem is not plastic itself, it’s that they don’t have the modern infrastructure to dispose and recycle it. Most of those people live on dirt floors, no or limited electricity! Between the corruption and lack of education and jobs, yes, it’s hard to fix it!

      Some people just don’t see a problem with this hence why it should be mandatory that all single use plastic is biodegradable

      No they don't. We're not talking about modern cities We're talking very remote villages with little to no infrastructure. It's just push the waste into the ditch out back. Then the monsoon rains wash it away each year.

      I assume you are Guatemalan, and are asking what is wrong with us Americans who produce 221kg/capita plastic waste per year, and then ship 950 million pounds of plastic waste every year to countries like Guatemala with only 6kg/capita plastic waste annually.

      @@coolaid7005 oh so americans ship trash to guatemala who then proceed to dump it into a river? Are you being serious?
