  • Collision between Weta 325 and 18ft Skiff Triple M. Wind around 15-18 knots. Lumpy sea.
Tripple M heading downwind gybes onto starboard and although the Weta has right of way, it bears away to try to avoid a collision but the trampoline frame of Triple M catches the stay of the Weta and the two become entangled. Surprisingly no damage to either boat.
20s: Weta tacks onto starboard on the layline heading for the windward mark.
1:35s: Triple M Hails Racing. Wet responds "So am I - windward boat!"
1.45s: Triple M tramp frame catches the stay of the Weta and the two boats become entangled.
1:56: Weta helm goes overboard to avoid 18fters bowsprit.
    2:30 Boats untangled.

Boats on same tack. Seems to me the 18 is windward of the weta. So rule 11, when overlapped, windward boat shall keep clear. Paul also did the correct move, rule 14, to try and keep clear.

Thanks Dave - I agree. But the 18ft Skiffs still think they own Sydney Harbour!

You possibly needed to call for water louder and sooner so they knew you were racing. It's very important to make your intentions clear, especially with with a boat that goes as fast as an 18 footer. Also shouting "Windward!" when you are actually leeward is a bit confusing.
They are in the wrong, but the real problem here was they thought you were just out having a sail and would give them room. Don't expect other yachites to read your mind, be clear and early about what you want.

@@antiussentiment There is no requirement to make a verbal call. One can be make as a courtesy but the rules on right of way are clear and paramount. A boat going to windward on starboard tack has right of way, racing or not.

@@brianholmes849 Obviously. But there's a dozen reasons why another boat may not see you, so why would you not?

Why did he stop racing? Once he cleared the other boat away he should have continued racing and sought redress.

We were sailing in different races organised by different sailing clubs. This kind of "I'm and 18ft skiff get out of my way" issue happens all the time! I was also concerned about damage to the boat which I couldn't inspect on the water.

    Who was at fault?

I'm close hauled on starboard on the layline for the windward mark since tacking at 24s. They are approaching from upwind at around 20 knots with the kite up also, also on Starboard while shouting "Racing!" at 1.40s. I shout "I'm racing too - Windward boat!" and at the last minute I turn downwind to to try to avoid a collision but their wing catches my stay and spins my boat around - who would you say was at fault?

@@Pewit35 It is clear cut, the 18ft was at fault.
