The Toronto Islands form an archipelago of 15 small islands located 1.6 km south of downtown Toronto on Lake Ontario, including Ward and Algonquin Islands. Originally known as Hiawatha, named after a head of the Iroquois Confederation, they protect the port of Toronto. There is a small residential community and Billy Bishop Airport. The islands are a popular recreational destination, with walks in the residential area, the Centreville amusement park, English gardens and beaches including Hanlan Point Beach where nudism is permitted.
