@@turk3sh Eh, it really wasn’t the hard way. One wildcard per league pre-2012 meant no wildcard game, and wildcards couldn’t play a division rival in the DS, so the Marlins avoided facing Atlanta in the DS in both ‘97 and ‘03 (though they did play and beat Atlanta in the ‘97 NLCS). However, MLB hadn’t yet abandoned the old 2-3 format for five-game series, so the Marlins got to play Games 1 and 2 of the ‘97 NLDS at home. And since home-field advantage just flipped back and forth through 2002, the Marlins had home field advantage in the ‘97 World Series. I think it’s fine, as there were division winners with worse records in both years, but given the rules at the time, the Marlins didn’t really face a higher degree of difficulty than division-winning playoff teams (not significantly, at least).
I was just a 9 year old kid when my dad took me to Game 4 of that world series, extra innings, walk-off HR, Marlins win. What an unforgettable night. I've never stopped loving baseball since.⚾
I’m angry at the Marlins for making the playoffs last year. Pre 2020 they were the only team in history to never win their division but make the playoffs and win the World Series both times they made the playoffs. A literal 100% success rate when they made the playoffs. 1993-2019 R.I.P.
Just imagine a Cubs Red Sox World Series that year. Two iconic teams with the two most infamous curses that hadn’t yet broken them, fighting for their chance to do so.
I was at that game, w/ a friend who had never been to a ballgame before. She asked me if every game was like this one. I replied w/ "There are never games like this". She left after the 6th Inning, but I stayed to see catcher Doug Mirabelli play first base. Crazy game!!!
I'll always remember Kevin Millar as Great Johnson in MLB Power Pros since his likeness couldn't be used because he was a 1994 replacement player and wasn't allowed to join the Player's Association. Also I love the Berd clip at 6:55
Yeah, this was the Cowboy Up Red Sox. Would have been fun if they made the World Series against the Marlins but I wouldn't trade the glory of the 2004 Curse Breaking Idiots for a bit of symmetry in 2003
As a Red Sox fan, I'll always remember this but I'll also remember the next game. The Red Sox led 9-2 after 7 innings. Then the Marlins scored 4 in the 8th and 4 in the 9th to win 10-9. I am pretty sure it's the only time in modern baseball history a team has come back from that much, that late, on the road.
Chance of a 14-run inning in a ballgame: 0.00324% Chance of a 7-run comeback on the road in the 8th inning: 0.16% This would happen in back-to-back games about once every 10,000 years.
It's what i love about baseball. The marlins that year had ups and downs but won it all in the end i was at game 3 of that NLDS where Pudge won it in extras
I was at the Reds game in August 1989 where the Reds had 16 hits and 14 runs in the 1st inning. 16 hits in an inning is the record I think. Final score was 18-2. Thanks for the interesting vid!
Are you F'n kidding me? I'm not sure if you are a Marlins fan or just recorded that in Miami? I am a Boston fan I was in the stands for the 25-8 game and could had gone the next night. THIS IS HOW THE STORY SHOULD HAD CONTINUED. Jack McKeon complained the Sox ran up the score and were trying to show the Marlins up. I and half the Boston world said tough noogies there is always a chance to come back in baseball. Flash to the next night(after 25-8) the Red Sox score 7 runs in the 6th inning to take a 9-2 lead. After that the Marlins got mad and came back to win 10-9 over the Red Sox. You could say those 18 innings turned around a season. That should had barren included.
Yeah ik I said it would be bad quality in the beginning. We recorded in a hotel room with a mic I've never used before and no way to play back the audio lol
Carl Pavano was a Red Sox fan who was drafted by them and then traded to the Expos for Pedro in 1998. I personally believe he always stayed loyal to the Red Sox organization no matter what team he pitched for. For instance, serving them up meatballs here when the Sox needed every win to try to catch the Yankees in 2003(Before the Marlins realized they were a contender.) Then, taking $40 million of the Yankees money from 2005-2008 while barely ever being available and sucking ass on the rare occasion he was available. Yanks and Sox were fighting for the AL East every one of those years and NY desperately needed Pavano. Then, lo and behold, he ditches NY for the Twins in 2009 and suddenly rediscovered how to pitch and stay healthy.
As a Marlins fan thinking of 2003 not only brings butterflies to my stomach it was such a classic world series . I cant help but be romantic about baseball after witnissing the absolute MASTERPIECES of games with the Marlins vs the Cubs and then the Yanks .
Marlins were one of the biggest underdogs in the 2003 MLB postseason and they shocked the baseball world by winning the 2003 World Series, unreal!
Marlins are such a strange team lol they have 2 rings but have no division titles.
Did it the hard way, which shows the resilience 🙏🏾

The ratings would have been absolutely insane
