  • Bonjour à tous/toutes!
    J'espère que vous allez très très bien! Today I have a video for you all about my takeaways from my TAPIF experience and if it was really worth it. I want to preface that this was my personal experience and that I have privilege as a white/hetero woman to be treated a certain way by others etc. I am in no way invalidating the experiences of others but I am solely here to share my takeaways from the program. I believe that there are flaws in the program especially in regards to how minorities are supported and my experience is not the best representative of those minorities. Donc, merci pour votre attention, subscribe if you want!! I will have more videos in the making :0

    Im in Tapif right now. I live in a little tiny town on the coast of Normandie. It’s absolutely beautiful here and I love the teachers that I work with, an amazing prof référent, and the students are fun. It has been difficult being in this little town because I am the only teaching assistant and the closest other assistants are at least 1hr 30min away by transit. I have made friends, as well as an amazing girlfriend ❤️, and I have travelled each vacances to different parts of France. Of course I came here in the midst of Covid and it has never let up(in fact become worse in a lot of ways). Even sans Covid, I feel like my experience would still have the same downsides because of the fact I don’t make a lot of money. My apartment is 320€ as well as utilities so after buying food each month, I still don’t have a lot of money for traveling. There are ways to économise better such as getting a carte jeune or CAF but these also cost money. In a lot of ways my situation was easier than if I was to be placed in a big city because my housing was ready for me as soon as I arrived and I am literally 5 steps from the door of the school. I know that this experience has been very impactful on my life but it has not been easy. It’s a test of how well you can stand feeling like an outsider and handle the humbling experience of not being able to effectively express yourself in a foreign language. Maybe I just need someone to vent to because my département just went back into a four week confinement... oh well! Looking forward to traveling in May before I come back to the US.

      Love this thought dump! Sometimes it feels good just to write it all out. Yes, money is stressssssful and sometimes it feels like the lack of it will never end. I felt very similar about my time doing tapif, it taught me so much. Thanks for sharing!!

    You're very good at expressing yourself and specifying how your experience abroad translates into essential job skills that you can apply to your future. It's been 35 years since I volunteered outside of Canada, where I live. Your ability to synthesize what you learned and speak about it with such clarity is very impressive.

    I did TAPIF 3 times. The first 2 years in the Paris region and the last year in a tiny town in the Académie d'Amiens. Contrary to what a lot of other people say I found the tiny town to be my best experience because the school was the best.

    • @kristinehlert

      Yes, I could totally see that! I feel like for me I loved my tiny little towns and the fact that I got to teach there. It felt like however, living near the metropole (or honestly just near a little bit bigger city in general) made me not lose my mind 😂 We’re you about to make friends with other assistants for French friends in your little town?

    I really enjoy your videos and would love to see more about TAPIF, especially any specific topics you think are important to know about! Would also love to hear more about what your actual classes were like, what kinds of things you did at work, etc.

      Thanks so much!! Yes, I would love to go through what a typical day for me looked like, thanks for your suggestions 😌 I feel like I had 2 different experiences at each school which it could be helpful to talk about (one school was more rigid the other was more relaxed)

    I'm going to be leaving at the end of September to do TAPIF, and I am planning on having about $5k of savings after all the initial expenses are paid. I have been working super hard this past summer to prepare for it and have been working 2-3 jobs just to save up. I'm hoping that will be enough to have for backup. :'(

    As far as money- I’m hoping to be placed in aix en Provence but I know it’s extremely pricey. My parents are giving me phone plan, some extra money etc as a gift, but do you know if a lot of tapif assistants do université housing?? I’d heard it was popular in the very pricy areas. I loved your video by the way!! Super helpful

      Hi! I actually studied abroad in Aix and I LOVED it. It is pricier but totally doable on a budget still. I remember I lived in a shared apartment for only 500 euro, but studio apartments were around 750. I do feel like a lot of assistants do University housing (I think there is some in Aix!) It is cheaper and you meet other people that way too. I am currently in University type housing in Paris and it is tiny but it’s sufficient for 1 person and so much cheaper than other places. If you get placed there, DM me for recommendations ;) it’s such a great city!!

    Hey! I'm in the Academie de Lille for this current year and am currently trying to get things figured out for the year... it's been a bit stressful to say the least, but your videos help! Do you mind me asking where you were assigned? I'm also in a smaller town but plan to live in Lille for social opportunities

    I'm teaching in South Korea in the EPIK program (Korean version of TAPIF). I'm interested in applying for the program but I was wondering how was the use of technology in the classroom? Like computers, powerpoints, etc. Also how open were your coteachers to modern teaching styles?

    • @kristinehlert
      @kristinehlert  Год назад

      Hello! Sorry I didn't get a chance to reply. For me, I had limited resources for most of my classrooms (just a chalkboard and chalk lol) but if you ask teachers, sometimes they can help you figure out ressources! I had to bring my own laptop. I have very half and half, some teachers taught in a more modern way and some taught in a very "strict" almost militant style.

    Hi Kristin, I am currently a TAPIFer and live in a very rural town and it is quite lonely. I just have a question because I am deciding on leaving the program early. Were you planning on teaching or pursing French after finishing TAPIF? When you were teaching, did you teachers have you create your own lessons or were they provided to you?

    • @kristinehlert
      @kristinehlert  Год назад +1

      Hi Jaidan! At the time I was not considering teaching or pursuing French after finishing the program. I actually was looking to go back into nursing which was my original life "plan". But then the pandemic hit and I realized that I wanted to pursue a Masters in French and international education. I had to create most of my own lessons, and it varies from academie to teacher to school what they expect of you. I mostly did the program to be able to travel more and to sort of get a "break" from the hustle and bustle of the past 4 years of undergrad. Also, I am sorry that you are feeling so lonely in your town, it is definatley something that they don't really warn you about before starting the program. If I may ask, is there a larger town near by? If you want to consider living in France again (but not do TAPIF) you could consider a Master's program there as well :) just an idea!

      @@kristinehlert Yeah, that's what i have been hearing; the pandemic was especially difficult on some TAPIFers. I live in Malemort-sur-Corrèze and one bigger town I often go to Brive-la-Gaillarde, but I guess theres not a lot of "life feeling" for me here. France is a beautiful place, maybe just not the place for me to livvvvee, you know? Thanks for the reply! (-:

    What did you teach in your classes? What percentage of English/French did you speak in class? Thanks!

    • @kristinehlert
      @kristinehlert  3 года назад +1

      Personally, I did a lot of games (tongue twisters, mini presentations) but with collégiens it can be difficult for them to speak up. So I would do readings and everyone would take a turn. I probably spoke more French than I should have (I would say about 50/50) especially to explain directions. I probably should have done more English but it was frustrating for me and the kids so this way English was more fun for them (since they understood the game!) also at one school I did a lot of presentations, sing alongs and worksheets. My other school I did more games rather than lessons. Hope this helps! If you have more questions let me know!
