Wolfwalkers was partially based on the werewolves of Ossory, and the Lord Protector was based on Oliver Cromwell, who invaded Ireland in 1649. In Irish history he's a villain, in English he's a hero.

    • @gguy3600
      @gguy3600 Год назад +25

The Lord Protector wasn't based on Oliver Cromwell, he straight up was Oliver Cromwell. The Lord Protector was his offical title. Also, maybe it's just been my experience, but as a Brit I'd say opinions of him here are pretty mixed. Some see him as a hero who liberated the people from a tyrannical monarch, but a very substantial number of people (myself included tbh) see him as little more than a tryannical dictator who simply replaced one group of oppressors with another.

Don't forget Robyn told her father that Kilkenney makes her feel like the home she lives in is a cage not being able to break free of its confinement as well as control with lack of escape over young girl's life subjected on unjust treatment by everyone who reside there that herself has no power over own life.

There's a graphic novel of the movie and it gives an origin for the Wolfwalkers. Years ago, there were tribes of people who had healing magic. When St. Patrick came to Ireland to spread Christianity, these healers refused to convert and every time St. Patrick would preach, they howled like wolves deep in the forest. In response to this, St. Patrick cursed them (or blessed them) to take on the forms of wolves at night.

Studio Cartoon Saloon and Tomm Moore's so called "Irish Folklore Trilogy" are three amazing movies! The Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea and Wolfwalkers. They are all standalone and each focuses on a specific folklore. They are really magical, would recommend the other two!
Interesting fact: Robyn was originally a boy.
Mentioning religion isn't just a reference, this movie is somewhat using christian colonialism and destruction of pagan beliefs as its central motif. The lord protector is literally Oliver Cromwell, a historic traitor and tyrannical dictator.

Interesting facts about Cromwell - executed Charles I for treason, reformed the British army into the redcoats that would dominate for centuries after, desolved parliament, burned down the theatres, banned Christmas, and wiped out 80-90% of Ireland's population at the time. After ruling England as "Lord Protector" for 15 years, he died in England (and not by wolves), and was replaced by Charles II.

A nice quick analysis from an artist: One of the things I love about this movie is the art style. Not just because it looks beautiful, especially with the background, but it actually has a lot more symbolism especially with the characters. With Robin and her father along with the other people living in the town, their line art is more bold and sharp. It’s as if they’re staying in the lines, like how Robin and her father has to obey Lord Proctor and stay within the walls of the town. But with Mebh, her mom, the wolves, and Robin (after she got bit), their line art is more rough and sketchy. Even the coloring is outside those lines. The art with those characters are more freeing and wild like how those characters themselves are roaming free with no restrictions when they’re in the forest. The huge difference in art style between the different characters really contributes well with the story and the dynamic between the characters, a man vs. wild kind of deal. TLDR; This movie is one of the best animated movies and has one of the best art styles I’ve seen. Using the different art styles of the characters is a great detail to tell a character development, especially for Robin and her father!
(Fun Fact: James Baxter animate one of the scenes for this movie!)

Another interesting piece of trivia is that originally Robin would have been a young boy, probably with a father-son relationship angle. They eventually made her a girl because it gave new layers to the discrimination she’s enduring in Kilkenny, being a girl who has traditionally male interests; her father clearly let her help him before but doesn’t want her drawing negative attention beyond just being an English person in Ireland. It also makes her relationship with Maeb more interesting…
Some people ship them, which the director Tom Moore didn’t intend but has said it’s a fair interpretation. My take is they were going for a found family dynamic between the respective children and parents, and that Robin regardless of gender would be like siblings with Maeb, but it’s vague enough that anyone can read as they wish into it (and they’re young enough that anything could happen later on).

Cartoon Saloon is a studio worth following. They have done four movies so far. This one is the latest. Secret of Kells was the first one, Song of the Sea was the second.
All those movies have a Celtic root. The third one, The Breadwinner, was a departure from their usual Celtic stories, since it is situated in Afghanistan, about a girl pretending to be a boy in a Taliban lead Afghanistan to work to help her parents.
Also an excellent film that fans of Cartoon Saloon sadly ignore because it is so different.
They are currently working on their first stop motion film, The Inventor, which is on Leonardo DaVinci.

I am studying animation and a friend of mine loves this movie. She's the biggest cartoon saloon fan and even owns the Wolfwalkers Artbook. We got to see this movie at a special screening and it was an amazing experience!
Another classmate was able to go to the screening a couple days later and got see Tomm Moore in person. I've read interviews and the process of making this movie is nothing short but inspirering. Showing that yes, you can make movies with looser animation. In some parts you can see the underlying sketches of the characters and it's all done on purpose.

I personally see mebh and robyn as sisters rather than a ship as their portrayed to be young at 12 years old. Plus their parents seem to have a thing and even though their not related by blood, it would still be weird to me if they dated whilst their parents where together. The director admitted the lqbtq themes of "coming out" were accidental and their parents did fall in love making them sisters

I REALLY wish this movie was available on DVD!
Ever since I first saw it, I thought "my sister would absolutely love this." See, she's a huge fan of Ireland and all its folklore; which makes this movie perfect for someone like her to see

whatever injury the wolfwalker gets in wolf form happens to the sleeping body. so when a wolfwalker gets shot while in wolf form the wound from the shot appears on their human body so while their spirit slowly makes it's way to their human body the human body remains still to bleed out. when the wolfwalkers wolf spirit returns to their body the wolfwalker then slowly starts dying

If you liked the art style, you're going to love it's predecessors "The Secret of Kells" and "Song of the Sea".😊 "Wolfwalkers" is the third and final film of the Irish Folklore Trilogy from this studio.

This movie got me close to bawling my eyes out 2 times, and I still have tears running down my cheeks as I write this. I have no idea why it got me so bad. Guess I got a good cry out of it I suppose...

You should react to all the films of Cartoon Saloon. Wolfwalkers is probably their best but the other ones are great to. They don't have to many, only 5 this included

Kind of on the subject of the movie, I sometimes get really really sad that I wont ever get the chance to be a cat. I just really want to be a cat with a human-like personality or something, like in Warrior cats. Doing stuff like hunting and learning to fight by my clan's side just seems amazing, it's sad to me that I'll never do that

3:40 - Kilkenny, Ireland... "never heard of this city before" well, I only know this city for their beer. There's Guiness from Dublin (the black draft beer everyone in Europe knows) and Kilkenny, it's a ruby colored beer.
well, enough of this. I've always wanted to watch this movie but I'm no Apple TV customer. Thank you for this reaction so I can see the full movie
This ending is pretty heavy to the feelings. Robyn had lost her mother long ago and then seeing Mebh lose her mother too is too much for her. So she did the only right thing she could.

I wish I could buy it but ya can't. Anyway, I really hated the "lord protector" he's like judge claud frolo and Gaston mixed. Really wanted him to have an ill fate.

Others have already said this but the other movies made by this studio are great too, not as visually impressive but still amazing storywise. The rest of the Irish folklore trilogy (The secret of Kells and Song of the sea) are great and creative. As well as The Breadwinner, which is not related to any Irish folklore but still made by the studio, it is pretty heavy and dark but it's still just as good as the others made by this studio (including visual creativity). This film tends to get ignored by people watching the Cartoon Saloons movies which is really sad because as I said it's on par with its other films.

Wolfwalker's is such an amazing movie.
When I first saw the trailer's I knew that I was gonna love it and when I did indeed see Wolfwalker's for the first time I was not disappointed.
This is a hard movie to find to view.
Shortly after Wolfwalker's came out the internet exploded with article's on how the studio had missed out on a perfect lesbian relationship with Robyn and Mebh. I disagree, they're too young for such a thing.
Now if they had been abit older then I'd agree with the missed lesbian relationship.
Towards the end of the movie, before pure chaos erupted, I was thinking if they were only alittle older.
After watching the movie I had thought a sequel would be nice but that's when I learned that the studio doesn't do sequel's which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Not every movie need's a sequel.
