    corrections:
    - On the diagram at 4:00, the labels for sedna's periapsis and apoapsis are mistakenly swapped. _(noticed by CatKhakis)_

    Whoa, the production values on this are pretty crazy. What could have been a pretty typical advanced-slideshow is elevated a lot by the motion graphics you've got going on here. I like it.

      Thanks! I’ve seen my fair share of videos that are plenty-well researched, but don’t put the time into presentation and it does such a disservice to the information and the audience. It’s not always easy, but I try to not fall into that trap.

    You forgot one possibility, one that quite recently has gained some traction. Being that the planets start of chaotic and all over the place, and influence and push and pull each others orbit in some kind of planetary musical chair. where over time only the ones that find a 'pretty stabile' orbit (or that clear their local area) remain. This effect is stronger the closer they are to the sun and each other due to more interactions with each other, thus Sedna, being far away from the sun and other large planetary bodies, still hasn't 'settled down' yet (and probably never really will, its orbit is just way too slow and far from any large planets)

    I really like the "accessed 2022" combined with the dates of documents that have released data. Due to constant re-defining definitions in the field, I cannot stress the importance of the "point of access" which most Astronomy channels ignore (and especially channels that put a "spin on space" to give it more clickable pizzazz, though, ironically for them, this format is "providing the latest").
    Everything else is really well produced! Thank you for your hard work!

      Thanks! I was a bit more loose with my citations a couple of years ago, but one of the odd challenges of working on videos for as long as I do is that you notice some sources changing out from under you before the video’s even finished. So it’s become increasingly important to me that information carries a certain standard of transparency when possible.

    The whole planet vs. not a planet thing is ridiculous, they should all just be included as planets, dwarf distinction aside, it's a world that orbits our sun.

    • @EmergentBeacon
      @EmergentBeacon  11 месяцев назад +1

      I feel like you're just pushing the problem down the road a little bit (making new edge cases at a smaller size, Pluto's tiny), unless you're advocating that every speck of dust in orbit around a star be considered a planet which would be a bit silly and I'm sure that's not what you mean. Definitions are really useful! It's why we have so many. I've read folks advocating for a sort of cultural/colloquial use of planet that is a distinct or notable body in orbit of a star (which sounds like your suggestion), while scientific use of planet is more strictly confined; but that's just how language works already, so in a way there is no vs, both exist for the situations that call for them.

    how can we be sure that it is following that elliptical orbit and its not only passing by the sun just once before disappear behind it forever?

    • @EmergentBeacon
      @EmergentBeacon  3 месяца назад

      That's a good question because the orbit takes so long that we can't directly observe a full orbit in our lifetime. I'm not an astrophysicist, but if I had to guess how they do it, it just comes down to multiple observations. From that you can determine Sedna's position, speed, and trajectory. If it has a satellite then you can determine its mass, but Sedna doesn't so I'm guessing instead you determine upper and lower limits on its size and mass based on observations. Now that you have all of these details, you can calculate its orbit because we have a pretty solid understanding of the major bodies in our solar system. So basically you can use math to determine that a body the size and speed of Sedna shouldn't reach escape velocity from the solar system, at least not any time soon.
