We might see a KINDLE COLOR sooner than expected

  • I wasn’t really convinced that we’ll see a Kindle Color anytime soon, because there have been rumors about a Kindle with a color E-Ink screen for more than ten years. Amazon even bought a dutch company called Liquavista at one point, which sparked a lot of speculation about a Kindle Color in 2013. But nothing really came off it.
    But recently - thanks to E-Ink Kaleido 3 - Color E-Ink has been gaining a lot of traction with some smaller companies like Boox and PocketBook.
    Kaleido 3 is the name of the technology that actually for the first time ever in my opinion, made color E-Ink usable without too many compromises.

      I've been a Kindle user from the beginning and have loved every Kindle I've owned. That being said, I just bought the Kobo Libra Colour to replace my aging Paperwhite. My main reason wasn't just for the color screen, but also wanted to venture outside of the Amazon ecosystem since I usually sideload my ebooks anyway.

    I would like to see the following things from a new kindle device:
    1. Faster/Better responsiveness
    2. Page turner buttons, including a hands free option (similar to the current kindle remotes)
    3. Color display and color highlighting
    4. The ability to choose and keep the Lock Screen set to display a particular picture.
    Most of the features are available as accessories or partially with hacks but it would be nice if it was built in.

    Yeah, color would be nice, but wake me when the e-ink response time is 5x quicker and the touch screen response is 5x more reliable. Also, for the love of Books, please bring back physical page forward/back buttons! I still think the "Kindle Keyboard" models from a decade ago is a lot better designed than the current Paperwhite. Mine still works great! My latest generation Paperwhite is a compromised piece of hardware and UI software garbage in comparison.

      That's a good list right there. I echo those complaints, especially the lack of physical buttons and slow screen response time.
      The other thing that winds me up is the lack of basic missing kindle features, yet the phone app has. I can already play Audible books on a kindle, and can already read kindle books on a kindle; so why can't I also have audio narration just like the phone app. The feature seems 95% there, but not actually implemented.

    • @designerd77
      @designerd77 4 месяца назад +2

      Very much agree on the buttons. The slow response time doesn't bother me so long as the colors are rich and the battery lasts (the whole point of e-ink)

    • @RtsFps1
      @RtsFps1 3 месяца назад

      Faster response time may never happen. I had a Kindle in 2015 and these 2022-2024 ereaders have hardly improved in that aspect. 9 years in tech is a long, long time. They’re designed to last for several weeks on one charge. Unless more readers demand a battery life of say 1 week for faster processing, it just isn’t gonna happen.

      Amazon is always good for a surprise, as we've seen with the Scribe an it's 300 ppi screen no competitor had for quite a while. I wouldn't be surprised if Amazon manages to exclusively license an improved Kaleido/Color-E-Ink tech.

      Yes, it's a shame they stopped. I also had high hoped for that one. But color E-Paper seems to be really tough to crack, because there were a couple of companies that tried it, but eventually gave up, which I suspect also has something to do with the ereader-boom stopping after the market was saturated with Kindles.

    • @ChalidRaqami
      @ChalidRaqami  5 месяцев назад +3

      Initially I thought Amazon would wait for ACeP, but now I'm not so sure anymore.
      E-Ink seemed to have problems with manufacturing Gallery 3, which is why Bigme had huge problems fulfilling their crowdfunding backer's orders for the Galy - and other companies didn't release any Gallery 3 devices despite them being announced.
      So, unless E-Ink has fixed those manufacturing issues and maybe even sped things up with a new Gallery 4(?), I guess Amazon might lean more towards Kaleido 3 or a better version of it.
      But honestly, flipping a coin might give you as good a guess as any at this point. :D The only thing I'd bet on? Amazon won't wait a couple of more years now that Kobo (and Tolino) are releasing Color E-Ink ereaders. That'd be a pretty huge risk for their market share on the ereading market.

    Would be nice for Kindle to have color and monochrome together. Color for comics and other picturesque material. Monochrome for pure reading. But thank you for ur explanation on the limitations of color e ink. Need to find a way for the technology not using filters and have individual e ink pixels to put out color and black and white similar to AMOLED. In this case for monochrome the pixels displaying other colors can be off while only black is on. And if it's a color image with some white either keep the white off or muted or keep the LCD glass color looks nice to look like paper as even some comic books they don't use white color often, just the natural paper color. But yeah let's hope they come up with something soon. Am holding of buying a kindle as don't wanna waste money on black and white display and few months later color comes out.

    I also hope they release the next kindle with 5g internet as well as wifi. Cause internet like 3g (old kindle touch had) and the 4g that the oasis has means you can buy books worldwide without the worry of needing to connect to wifi. Amazon could put out a terrific color Kindle in short order by recreating what they had with the original, first generation Fire. It was not a mediocre Android tablet, like all current Fires, with all their extra crap, that just happens to have the Kindle app. It was an e-reader first and foremost, with a few perfunctory tablet-y features. The Kindle app was basically the OS. THAT is what I want. That, and a nice crisp color LCD, which I prefer to Kindle monochrome.
