Just sharing what works for me in my travels! I'll do an updated video in the future, but thanks for helping each other out with tech questions in the comments! Safe travels everyone ✈️
The reason the adaptor has a lightening port right next to the USB port is so that you power your external device from the adaptor itself (your phone can’t power it).
Just plug your phone charger into the adaptor and that should power your external memory. If your external device usually requires power then it will need powering when plugged in to the adaptor. Which ever way you do it will work.
This is not working directly with IPhone 14 Pro Max and Extreme SSD. It gives and error that the device requires too much energy.
So the lightning charges only the Phone. And data cannot be transfer
@@jcasubcst4023 I’ve been using this method since the iPhone 8! The only times it hasn’t worked has been with cheaper type camera adapters or things of that nature like below 15w wall plugs.
On the 13 it had a glitch where unless you had the phone locked before plugging the camera adapter in, it wouldn’t work 90% of the time but when you plug everything up, then plug into the phone and unlock it, it worked right away every time. Maybe try this with your 14 pro max?
Cheap wall adapters / lower power sometimes doesn’t work either.
We use 2 14 pro max (and a bunch of others from 11 to 15 pro and 15 pro max) and transfer from them on a daily basis with no issues.
I use Toshiba 2tb Canva (or something like that is the name) as I don’t transport them but all of my colleges use T7’s etc.
Plug everything into your camera adapter (power lightening ssd to adapter etc), making sure the phone is locked. Then plug the adapter into the phone. Then unlock your phone and go to your files. It ‘should’ be there. I hope this helps you.

I totally agree- all research I have done has shown a dozen other ways but none of them came close to what I needed. I just ordered the lightening usb camera adapter! Hopefully this will accomplish getting my photos moved to my hard drive.
I actually ended up using lightning adapter and a usb thumb drive because my external hard drive was not compatible with iPhone 12. At least that is my assumption because I did accomplish getting photos moved .

I just used a usb that plugs into a computer. Then just moved my pictures over to the file.
Does this retain the metadata on photos and videos? Every time I try to transfer photos & videos from my iPhone the dates, times and locations of them are erased.

Pro tip: if you get a “read-only” message the HD needs to be formatted to “FAT” in order to successfully transfer files from phone to HD. Best to format it before you start storing any data on it to prevent the loss of any pics/videos.

The external hard drive needs more power. Even plugging in a lighting into the adapter isn’t enough power. The USB hub provides enough power to the HDD and also allows data transfer
You can use a lightning-to-microsd adapter + a microsd card without needing the powered USB thing
This you can do in any USB C port apple device~ i like it so much! event lightning port no enough power to read CF Card reader device@@
Upto what capacity will it support 1 TB , 2TB or more??
What is the step by step way to the actual transfer?? It’s so tedious how it won’t let me copy all of my photos straight to the hard drive. I have to create a file in files app then copy those into the hard drive.
it won't because the port was meant for charging and data transfer to a powered device, so for a powerless device like external drive it needs the hub at least according to apple
In iphone 15 pro they have released usb c at usb 3 speeds which means higher data rate, still not sure if it supports powering external drives
Also, small tip usually the HDD are quite heavy on power draw around 5W
But I think newer SSD drives (do not have motors or seek hand (mechanical parts)) should use lower wattage around 2-3 W at max maybe..
This should eliminate need to external power supply
still this should help us, letting backup be done during bed time on the desktop without needing a mac or pc
Did the exact same setup with everything you have and the hard drive name pops up in the files but then goes away and never comes back

format harddrive to exfat instead of fat32 it worked without buying anything but a lightning to usb adapter.

I only use lightning camera adapter then plug it in straight to my hard drive and iphone.. it works pretty well to me.. will it damage the phone that way? The only thing I can’t find is the eject button..
I even have the same hard drive and accessories, but it doesn’t pop up. Any idea why? Do I need to set the external storage on a computer first?
Is your USB hub powered on? It won't work without power. I didn't have to set this up on a laptop. This was the exact setup I used while country hopping without a laptop or internet. Just plugged everything in, made sure the USB hub is on, opened the Files app, and it recognized my external hard drive and I transferred photos and videos that way. If all else fails, unplug everything, restart your iPhone and try again. Hope this helps!
@@TheNomadicFoodie Thanks for the reply! I got it to work. Apparently, my usb camera adapter wasn’t working, so I took another one, but it’s just to connect an usb, no charger next to it. But it worked like that, so I’m happy now haha

No it needs a power source, which the USB hub provides.

Ios version 16 and 17 are not compatible with this usb hub anymore. Apple wanted you to buy other stuff.

Once I transferred my photos and videos to my external hard drive, I deleted them from my iPhone so I could have more space for more travel footage. It works great for me.

You can use any brand external hard drive, but this one is a Seagate. I've had it for a few years now traveling through a few countries, and it still works great. First, they said to get an external SSD. Then they said you have to buy a dongle to connect the SSD to the iPhone, now you’re telling me I have to buy a USB hub?! I was really hoping for a solution that was less than buying storage through iCloud but this is getting up into the $300 zone already!

You don't need iCloud for this, I don't like using iCloud for photos either. Are you using a powered USB hub? If not it won't work. There's a link in the description to the exact one I use.
