The Emperor turns nervously to Feyd, who passes a
golden dagger to Thufir.
FEYD
(to Thufir)
The antidote...
GURNEY
(gestures to Thufir)
Thufir. Come.
Thufir approaches Paul, concealing the knife. They
come face to face. The Emperor seems strangely
tense at this moment. Paul notices this. He looks
Thufir over.
PAUL (CONT'D)
(inner voice)
A knife....
(out loud)
In payment of the many years of service to
my family, you may know ask of me anything
you wish. Anything at all.
(quietly)
Do you need my life, old friend?
He turns his back on him.
PAUL (CONT'D)
(quiet)
It is yours.
Thufir's eyes grow sad and wide.
PAUL
I mean this, Thufir. If you are to
strike, do it now.
Thufir's hand rises, as Jessica gasps, but the old
Mentat pulls his heart plug out with a quick tearing
motion. Paul turns and catches him as he sags.
His head lolls back and he looks up to Paul
urgently.
THUFIR (CONT'D)
Three... generations... of you...
His breath escapes him and he is dead.
PAUL
(to the guards)
Carry this noble Atreides warrior away.
Do him all honor.
The guards do as they are instructed.

Just like his father, House Atreides could rely on fanatical loyalty, not because the followers have to, but want to.
Very moving scene if you think about it. Most people would stab you in the back. Can’t wait for the new one to come out.
In the book he did that with Liet and Liet without thinking referred to Paul as 'Sire' all because Paul offered his life to the Freman
@@nodinitiative It was summed up in his last statement: "Three...generations..of you." Thufir served Paul, Duke Leto and Duke Paulus Atreides equally.
I get teary every time he says that. Great music too. Patrick Stewart as Gurney as well, puts such comradeship and gentleness into two words: "Thufir...come." Such superb acting.
A real shame this scene was cut from the movie. Thufir's sacrifice is powerful. He'd rather die than betray and kill Paul.
It should've been in, I totally agree.
Especially after going through what was clearly a long and drawn out brainwashing process. They must have been so confident in their abilities, only for Paul to literally turn his back on their plan.

@@hibbidyjibbidyy The torture was making him milk a cat every day to get the antidote to the poison they gave him. I was never sure why his mental abilities seemed to decline once he fell into Harkonnen hands, but suspect it was either a side effect of the poison, or he somehow did it to himself so he'd be less useful to them.
In the book it so much more intense...

Paul's heart is so cracked by the end. He's lost so many people.

This also explains why Feyd has to borrow the Emperor's knife to fight Paul.
It's symbolic. By killing Paul with the Emperor's blade he is acting as his champion.
I can see why Lynch was so pissed he didn't get final cut, this scene alone would've added so much to the film.

Why was that incredible line cut?
Because films are a visual medium perhaps? He could have had his Harkonnen heart plug surgically removed at some later date & lived, but standing in the presence of his true Liege Lord he could not live as Harkonnen for one second more. This does not need to be conveyed with words in a visual medium.
@@ArgosySpecOps Thufir didn't die of a heart plug though. He was already dying because the continuously administered antidote was withdrawn upon his return to Arrakis. He had used what strength was left in him to deny the Emperor his attempt at treachery and to see his lord one more time.
@@mrbloodmuffins Keep in mind in the original novel Thufir didn't actually know about the poison, and just stuck a poisoned needle into his own hand instead of into Paul.

@@DarthRushy He believed the Atreides were completely dead at that point and the Baron wanted a new mentat after his had died, so he decided to take Thufir since he was fairly renown as being one of the best. I believe Thufir decided to ultimately play along to try to destroy the Harkonnen's from the inside, which of course the Baron suspect and put several fail safes in place.
This scene explains Paul's explosive anger toward Feyd, manifested by a curse delivered with so much force it split the floor open.

bambi raptor Just like the first Game of thrones book. It should have been at least 16 episodes (about 16 hours) instead of 10 episodes (almost 10 hours).
Game of thrones would have been confusing as fuck if it was just 2hrs and 30 mins.
Personally I disagree, but that’s just my opinion. I far prefer the 2000 SciFi Miniseries. It’s much more true to the books, (much longer, keeping more detail) and generally a better representation of the original story. But that’s just my personal opinion.
They filmed over 6 hours and then had to cut it to bits. This was before stories could be told in two or three movies.

It would have, but perhaps not in the right way for what Herbert intended. Paul is not the hero of Dune. Herbert said that his purpose in writing the Dune books was to convey a single message: Charismatic leaders should come with a warning label that reads, "May be hazardous to your health."
Paul did not save the Fremen. He didn't free them from oppression, either. What he did was prey upon their religious superstitions, willingly. He had an option to flee with his mother into exile and disgrace … but he wanted to ensure that the Harkonnens and the Emperor paid for the murder of his father. The Villeneuve film actually makes a point to lampshade that choice, but it was there in the book.
We're told Duke Leto is good and great and just and fair … But Leto snarkily comments that yes, his propagandists have been hard at work, because how would people know that if they didn't have someone to tell them it was so?
Sure, the Harkonnen are hedonistic, covetous, and cruel, they're bad people who kill hundreds, enslave thousands, and all but enslave millions. Bad people.
Is Paul better? Paul knew that to get his vengeance meant whipping the Fremen into a religious frenzy, manipulating them as literally their Jesus Christ to go on a holy war against his enemies. He knew that if he did that, they'd fan out throughout the known universe, to thousands of planets, and force them to convert to the worship of Paul and of the worm. Convert or die.
They killed millions of millions. They depopulated whole planets. So much better than the Harkonnen monsters, yes? But at least the Fremen were free, right? Oh, wait, no, they were also placed under this theocratic rule. To break the law is sin, and sin is punishable by death. Even those who were Paul's friends were not safe, because they'd be executed by Paul's administrators without ever bothering His Holiness, Emperor Paul Moad'dib with it.
And that's nothing compared to what his son would do for thousands of years. "For your own good." And it might have been. Scant comfort when you're told that you must die for "your own good", referring to the collective of humanity. Good for them maybe, just … not good for you.
@@knghtbrd I always figured Paul was basically replacing the Bene Gessirit as cult leader. They wanted him to do those things for them, for their power. Ultimately Paul had a choice to free humanity from their prescience but couldnt bare to do the things needed to bring about that freedom, even though terrible things were done in his name anyway. It takes his son ultimately to manipulate humanity into finally banding together to take him down. Took me years to understand that. It was way beyond my teenage mind at the time.
After these comments I’m going to have to read the books. It might ruin the movie, but oh well.

Taken on its own, this is pretty compelling and Shakespearian, and gives Thufir a finished character arc. Shame it was left out... the movie needed stuff like this.

@@NuntiusInfestissumam it seems like it strayed too much from the source material with an attempt to project a new message. it was visually stunning but too detached and impersonal. with all its flaws, at least the 1984 version had a little more emotional connection
Notice the sad look on Irulan and Shaddam's faces. Its too obvious that everyone there admired and respected Thufir Hawat.
Thufir was well know in the Empire and was regarded as THE Mentat, the very best tactician. The Emporer desired for him to work for himself but he denied it to serve the Atredies. I think in thd book it says something along the line that who ever Thufir worked for would essentially be unbeatable with his skills.

That scene would have been great without the soundtrack. I personally find it dark and boring, it does not make me feel anything at all. It is not underrated, it just does not work.
It's literally one theme that plays over and over regardless of the context

Wow this scene was so moving. Without it, the film feels incomplete now. I think Thufir and Duncan Idaho should have been given more time.
It was old DeLaurentis' fault. He wanted a 2-hour pop-corn movie. This movie was intended to be a three-hour epic.
Though I love Delaurentis for Barbarella and Conan, and this.

I realize the movie was extraordinarily long, but this scene should have never been cut. It shows the devotion that Thufir Hawat has for the Atreides family. It also makes mention of the fact that Thufir served Paul's grandfather who isn't mentioned anywhere else in the movie, but he is a major character in the first half of one of the prequel trilogy books.

Now that you mention it, I do seem to recall Leto saying that Thufir had served 4 generations of the Atreides family. However, if I recall correctly, in the book "Dune: House Atreides", it says that Paul's grandfather, Paulus, was Thufir's first master. Of course, Brian Herbert could have made a mistake OR I could be remembering incorrectly. It has been a few months since I read that book.
Glenn Sellers well, Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson's prequel trilogy to Dune has a lot of contradictions.
well technically he hadn't served Paul yet. He was still in service of Duke Leto when Paul apparently died along with the rest of the Atredies.

in that scene he talks about 3 generations of Atreides, not 4, and Brian and Kevin had not written the prequel books yet. I think it is also mentioned in Frank Herbert's original Dune, but I'm not sure.

The way Thufir 'wakes up' at the end, desperate to pull the plug..then he holds the heart-plug up like a dagger!
I think his gasp at the end was his surprise that a Harkonnen device wasn't more painful.
Poor Thufir Hawat. His heroic death is cut both from this version of the film and they cut it from the 2024 version too (despite Stephen McKinley Henderson filming all his scenes for it in advance... makes me hope for an extended cut despite Villenueve's claims he doesn't want to release a version like that).
I loved that scene in the novel. Thufir yelled definitely at the Emperor. “After three generations, (close to anywhere between 200/500 spice enhanced years ). Do you think I would betray House Atredies now!
My God what an absolutely heartbreaking scene. So moving with emotion it's soul crushing. And the background music adds to the finality and sadness perfectly. If any scene should never have been deleted it's this. It's arguably the best scene in the entire film....and it was cut.

Freddie Jones as Thufar was a class act and his love for Paul and House Atreides shone through. The backing soundtrack was excellent.
I often wondered what happened to poor Thufir after he was captured by the Harkonnens. This scene explains his fate and nicely ties up that particular loose end. There really ought to be a four-hour Directors' Cut with all of the deleted scenes restored IMHO.
What happened to him? The guy nearly brought House Harkonenn down by himself. Even if Paul hadnt risen up, House Harkonenn would have been destroyed by Thufir in the long run.
@@Darklarik3 He wasn't called a "Master of Assassins" for nothing, and using his formidable Mentat skills definitely made him a seriously dangerous opponent in terms of strategic and tactical skill. It's no wonder that Duke Leto was training Paul to become a Mentat in his own right--if Paul had finished his Mentat abilities, combined with Thufir's... 😱No wonder Emperor Shaddam was afraid of House Atreides!

@@tektoastium7241 That part I remember--when he was captured by the Harkonnens, he was given a slow poison and the cat produced the antivenom that would keep him alive each day.

This scene should not have been cut from the film! It humanizes Paul and demonstrates why he is a respected leader. It also provides a noble end for Thufir.
In the book it’s almost a comedy of errors the way Shaddam asks one person after another (Thufir, Feyd, Fenring) to kill Paul and they all either fail or refuse.
What was great in the book was that Thufir had a poisoned needle in his left hand instead of a knife. Paul offered his own life as in the deleted scene. However, Paul, after taking the Water of Life and converting the poison and unlocking his abilities, was like the Bene Gesserit, was now immune to poisons. So, Paul would not have died even if Thufir did stab him with the poisoned needle.

I totally agree, this is a powerful scene, Paul gave this man his chance to redeem himself, and die as a hero, it also showed that his followers would die for him willingly not out of fear but out of loyalty. that's something not even the emperor has.
This scene is like watching one of your favorite uncles die in front of you.

@OkamsRazer I thought heartplugs were in the book but they were cause of the pollution on the planet not as a method of execution or death.
Sad this was cut. In the book he was given a poisoned needle in the palm to kill Paul with when embracing him.
Paul knew too, but Thufir pierced his own hand, killing himself, and had quite powerful words to die with, that finally drew forth real fear from the emperor and the bene gesserit.
"See, your majesty? See your traitors needle? Did you think that I, who've given my life to service of the Atreides would give them less now?"
The book is 1000% worth the read.

Cut scenes like this make it clear how close to the book the film really was. It's a shame that Lynch didn't divide the original book into a trilogy, which probably wasn't a popular idea back then, but one that would totally work now.

@@muaddib5079 ... It wasn't really the studio's fault, it was the production/distributor, Universal Pictures, because they controlled logistics & budget. There was indeed an initial plan to split it into 2 or 3 movies way back in the preplanning stages of the late 1970's. Villeneuve's 2021 version redeems that movie splitting idea, that Lynch/Scott were not able to use due to Universal's meddling.

- a.) *_Legacy of Service_** ~* Thufir Hawat had served House Atreides for *over ONE HUNDRED years* (and Hawat was not a young man when he started his service to House Atreides); from Paul's grandfather ("the Old Duke"), to Leto Atreides (Paul's father), and to Paul Atreides himself, with unquestionable loyalty, unswerving dedication, and unblemished honor.
- b.) *_Mentats vs. Love_** ~* Mentats are supposed to (but not 'strictly' required to) hold themselves above (or apart from) _"simplistic"_ human emotions and desires that could/would distract them from their Role as advisors and intellectuals on the intergalactic political stage. Put another (simpler) way, _'Mentats were Star Trek Vulcans, before there were any Star Trek Vulcans.'_ *;)*
- c.) *_Thufir Hawat & Love_** ~* Despite this (above) Mentat doctrine, Hawat deeply loved the Atreides family, loving Leto Atreides like a son and greatly respecting him as the Duke Atreides, and loving Paul Atreides both as family ('grandson') and for what Hawat believed could be a viable successor to his Atreides' Mentat legacy. For the last factor (Paul), Hawat knew his time/life was nearing its end, regardless of any Harkonnen plots _(over 100+ years, remember?),_ and had hoped to impart his Mentat training and secrets onto Paul, who exhibited Mentat-level mental skills and capability (Hawat not knowing of Paul's destiny as the Kwisatz Haderach).
2.) (1:16) *_"Three generations of...you..."_** ~* I really wish they had included this in the 1984 film, watching Hawat's death in this (deleted/extended) scene always makes my eyes moist with the emotional weight of its meaning _(Loyalty to the end)._ Hopefully someday we will get a Dune film/series that can fully express the deep *_Love_* and unbreakable *_Loyalty_* that House Atreides inspires.
Underated movie! ... it is finally finding its quality with posterity, thr costumes , sets were amazing, and effects were pretty darn good for no CGI.
Easily the most touching scene in the entire movie and they cut it.
man this scene is intense why would they take it out. a true warrior death before betrayal.

Should of never been cut, but at least they finally allowed us to see the scene in the DVDs and such.
This scene truly spoke of the loyalty of the Atreides retainers.... Loyalty earned through 3+ generations of Atreides leadership...
That is the kind of leadership rarely seen anymore. Even when one generation earns the loyalty and admiration of their people, it seldom passes on to subsequent generations. The kind of honor required is seldom taught to the children the way it should be as with Paulus, Leto, and Paul. Such is the sad difference between fiction and reality. The kind of people Frank Herbert envisioned for the Atreides where worthy of respect, but they where dreamed up to create a contrast between what COULD be, and what IS even within the dune universe. Paulus and Leto where respected in the Landsraad because they where not normal among the nobles. They where for lack of a better way of putting it... better leaders than most.
Ironically, even the traitor Yueh was loyal to the family to the end.
I wept like a baby watching this scene. I have watched this movie probably 20 to 30 times in its various incarnations but I have never seen this scene before. Made me weep. Thanks for posting it. This is the true end of the movie revealing who Paul actually is and his love for Thuffir
This scene in the book is even more dramatic and heart breaking
Though he had been through so much abuse at the hands of the Harkonnens and his mind was all but lost, Thufir with what free will he had left in him choose to take his own life rather then harm his Paul and the house that he stood for many generations. Such loyalty shows that there are those who are will to sacrifice themselves their cause that is just and fair over those who would see everything in ruin. Let their sacrifice never be forgotten and be an inspiration for future generations to come so they know the struggles they endured to give them the life they have today.
Such a powerful, emotional scene. Its a shame that after all these years, I’m just seeing it today.
I remember seeing this in the original theater version many years ago and always wondered why we never saw it again even in the extended version.
Good scene, it shows also how Paul builds and commands such strong loyalty, through honour.
Why are the Empire in a huge civil war? The Atreides, Harkonnen and others are all in one Empire. It's the Empire of Mankind! So why fight each other???
The Atreides were building an advanced and powerful fighting force, to rival the Emperor's Sardauker forces. So he used the Harkonnens hatred for the Atreides to plot their downfall on Arrakis. Its like the old Italian Dukedoms, they were all one country but the fighting and plotting against each other never ended... humans eh!

Power, simple as that. For all their technology, the Dune universe is firmly rooted in the sort of politics one used to see in ages past. You should read the Dune novels, all of them, including the more recent prequel books which show the reasoning behind the Harkonnen's hatred of the Atreides, why there are few intelligent machines around, and how the Spacing Guild came to be. It's a huge, sweeping, saga, and very well worth reading.
Danthehorse Speaking of Italian Dukedoms, Germany was exactly the same way-a collection of feuding fiefdoms. I'm amazed at how many scenes were cut last minute from the theatrical release so little wonder why people had trouble following the plot. The irony is David Lynch had the same sort of subterfuge and intrigue happen to him as in the film by his 'superiors'. I think Lynch was garnering too much power and influence in the Hollyweird world so they knocked him down a few knotches by ordering him to cut large pieces of the film out at the last minute. This made the plot hard to follow and contributed to it's demise at the box office.

This was such a great scene and should never have been cut out. I'm just glad it finally saw the light of day on the 2 disc DVD release. I found a fan edit of Dune that had this and many other deleted scenes edited back into the film and it honestly made it a much better film that it originally was. I still think it needs a really well done remake (didn't care for the Sci Fi Channel version at all).

@@mssvattk That must have been the extended TV cut which had a lot of repeated scenes from what I remember. It was even more of a mess than the theatrical cut.

We now have Dune (2021) that is more or less a remake of this film (but not as good in everything but editing and pacing)
This is a great scene that needs to be restored to future releases. It directly ties to the scene about the heart-plugs, the smooth cat and the antidote.
This was a fucking EPIC. I shed tears for Thufir.

I didn't know Captain Picard aka Sir Patrick Stewart was in this movie. I loved the movie as a child and now as a grown-up, I see one of my fav actors. Very Cool Sir Stewart.
Its a great scene, gosh so much was cut from this movie. I truly hope Denis Villenuve doesnt have the same problem when he starts work on his adaptation.

We're just in unprecedented times right now, where more and more people are getting into streaming. And even preferring to wait a while until a movie is released on it's respective streaming service first
I'm being cautious cause if not enough people watch this movie in cinemas, the studio may not even feel confident to grant Villenuve a Sequel.
I truly hope it does really well, but i mean Dune is not exactly a widely known thing to the mainstream audience in general.

This is what was needed to make sense of the earlier scene with Thufir and the Baron when Thufir was first captured.
For Paul it is an act of gratitude to Hawat's loyalty towards the house Atreides through three generations. He has known this guy all his life and always respected him.
And yeah I should have said "gives him more motivation to challenge Feyd". The final fight would imo have had more impact if Feyd had actually done antything to Paul. Compare the two examples: "You're the last of a family I'm raised to hate" and "You manipulated and poisoned my friend".
We were denied this i the Lynch and sci-fi channel versions and the new version has also overlooked this powerful scene, for shame :(

It's very frustrating that they cut this scene out from the movie even in both versions. Paul presceint vision shown that he was to die at the hands of Thufir Hawat but, they even cut that iota out of the movie entirely.
This scene has such an emotional punch to it. There's no doubt that it should have been included in the final film (extended or otherwise). Not only does it complete Thufir's storyline with the cat and the antidote, but it displays that friendship and loyalty can overcome evil. Truly a great scene played out by some great acting.

I can understand why it was cut. It does harm the flow of the movie. But....I don't understand why it took me 28 years after seeing the movie to see this scene! So glad I did!
That's mostly because the flow of the flim overall was never that good to begin with. It really rarely is in any film, ever.
They didn't (and still don't) know how to use accentual and syllabic metre in dialogue to properly and subtly maintain and regulate the pace of the story, in a properly subtle way that no one consciously notices it. Using both at all times would become repetitive, using free verse is sloppy and inconsistent. By transitioning between each (and sometimes both) according to the nature of the scene, while maintaining a rhythm consistent with the conceptual pace of the scene, makes for much shorter and more impactful dialogue that fulfills all of the needs of the story without ever taking the viewer (or reader) out of it.
While it would've slowed things down to keep this in...frankly it's too important to have been cut when there were many, many other opportunities to cut scenes that were too long, or otherwise much less important than this one.
A pity this was deleted such a moving scene.
This is one scene (of many of removed scenes) the really should've been in the final film. You see Thufir get the heart plug on Giedi prime and thats it. Nothing ever happens with it. That scene culminates with this scene which is why its so jarring that its not in it. I wish the studio would do a new cut of this film that was as close to Lynch's original cut. (the three hour mark) since hes not interested in doing one. Theres a brilliant film in here somewhere. There needs to be a new cut.
I´m absoluttely baffled that this scene was not included. It would seriously have lifted the quality of the ending, because it gives Paul a motivation to challenge Feyd-Rautha and adds some closure to Hawat´s character. Besides it makes the scene in which the Baron tells him about the poison have a point. That scene has no purpose in the theatrical cut.

It was a sign of the times. The same mentality that didn't allow for most classic anime to be brought over to North America without a ton of butchering. The mentality there was that cartoons were for kids and they needed to dumb it down and bowdlerize it. In Dune's case, the mentality was that sci-fi was just "Star Wars".

I would love to see a cut with the theatrical and extended cut merged together. Yes, it's not the novel, but I still enjoy it on its own terms and there are some fantastic acting performances here.
They cut whole story arcs out of the movie because the original running time was close to five hours......and that was after Lynch pared it down from over six! Duncan Idaho, Shadout Mapes, Thufir.....huge swaths of the Fremen meeting...they all had huge storylines cut.

People don’t know that the movie was butchered by the bean counters at the movie studio, but thanks to the amazing acting by all the actors and the writers who were forced to write a shorter version of what they wanted and the director and all of the staff who worked on this movie, this film is one of the greatest films of all time. The costume and music departments were amazing for what limited budgets they were forced to go by. Goes to show money can’t buy quality but everyone working together can create a masterpiece.
This actually makes more sense now, why he selects Feyd-Rautha to kill next.

He didn't fail the Duke. For some reason nobody sees the good Doctor straight, the leverage that the Baron has over him because of his wife, who the traitor might reasonably be, and Yueh's death wish for total revenge. They also none of them realize his Imperial Conditioning (against taking human life and foresaking his loyalty to the Duke) has been broken! Something that would be much more difficult to ascertain. Although it strains credibility somewhat, since earlier in the film version at least, both Lady Jessica (particularly Jessica) and Thufir detect disturbances within Doctor Yueh, his anxiety, subtle rage, and fear. It also strains credibility that Yueh could bring the Arrakeen House Palace shields down and all that all on his own, without other key accomplices ready to rock and roll with him. It's also a tad ridiculous all the saboteurs and sabotage devices being found in the film version long after the Harkonnens have split the scene. Also, Thufir realizes immediately that all that is merely a trap within a trap, a total distraction. But now I'm really picking Lynch's version apart.
I also believe Thufir's words "the first step in avoiding a trap, is knowing of its existence, " and Paul's response "if it is a trap, why are we going?," and Thufir's explanation of the Harkonnens's giving up their CHOAM Dune contracts "so easily," (which they would never do in any other circumstance except by extreme coercion or Imperial Decree) etc., imply that they all know it may be a trap (that it in fact, IS clearly a trap), but to avoid pissing off the Emperor, or at least, the rest of the Landsraad, they have to step at least part way INTO the trap before taking any offensive or more sub rosa, vendetta (kanly) action. The Emperor bestows, the Great House obeys. At least superficially.
At least he could rest in peace and did not become the hit man of Muad'Dib and Alia's regime, like Duncan and Gurney.

Why is Thufir never shown!!! The miniseries had him die in fire, and even though I loved Dune Part 2 I kept expecting them to show just one scene showing the harkonnens had him.
The actor who plays Thuifer in the new Dune films said he had filmed some scenes but were cut. Hopefully we can see an extended cut with the scenes restored.

Please don't be offended, but, when have you EVER seen Hollywood do any book justice? I'm a big fan of Edgar Rice Burroughs; I've read over 2/3 of the books he ever wrote. Believe me when I say that Hollywood's Tarzan movies were a joke, especially the Johnny Weismueller ones and, when Disney put out "John Carter", I literally got sick to my stomach at the way they treated one of the greatest American Science Fiction characters I've ever read about. But, I expect nothing less from one of the worst movie studios in business today. ERB's family should buy back the rights to his books and sell them to a studio that wants to make movies the way they should be made.

True, but I will admit that it is difficult to do a book justice. My main complaint about most of Hollywood's attempts at making movies from books is the fact that most, especially Disney, want to add subplots that aren't even suggested in the book, just to make the movie more interesting. Take the John Carter movie, for example. In the original book, "A Princess of Mars", the blonde haired, white skinned Martians, called Therns, are only mentioned in passing and then only because John Carter sees them in a wall mural. However, in the movie, the Therns are major characters and are supposed to be the reason John Carter goes to Mars because they can open a way between Barsoom, Mars, and Jasoon, Earth. Jeez, that made me so angry when I saw it I almost walked out of the movie.
Yes , they want to explain everything, rending the story of any wonder or mystery. Closure is for children. :-)

I watched this movie in the theater in 1984 and love this movie. I have been so disappointed to see recently how many scenes were cut that could have made it even better.
