    great video. Just one small critique. just a little bit of bad information when it comes to the needle valve numbers and position. the third clip is the stock recommended setting. And the numbers start at the top clip position being number 1, and go down through five as the needle gets richer just like the rest of the Jets get larger as the numbers increase.

      And he's backwards on his air screw, back it out and it gets richer

      You're right. I noticed that too. Important for a feller like me at 1,850 metres/6,070 feet to get the jetting right. Mine is an '87 with a Mikuni round slide carb. Have just moved clip to try out a new neeedle position.

      that is some creative reasoning you came up with.
      some good books on the topic are "A Guide 1.1 to the choice, setting and use of tapered-needle motorcycle carburetors (Dellorto)" and "Mikuni VM Carburetor Super Tuning Manual"

    Hi Clark, I am running a kx500 myself. It is all running nice, have a cast iron liner which has been re-board one size up from standard, when I go down the road and get it high up in the rpm I have a little miss fire, at a certain rpm. I haven't tried anything yet, the carb was fully clean before I put it back on, so I think I might try some new reads, what do you think? And might try your jetting. Gav

    Hey, question for you. Should the pilot (slow) jet be as hollow as the main jet?

    • @clarkrupp
      @clarkrupp  16 дней назад +1

      You mean look through it ? Yes, but its awfully small so it's hard to see through but the tiniest of debris can plug it up.

      @@clarkrupp yep. Your right. Blew some air through it and now I can see that small hole. Must have been clogged. Thanks

    i had to buy a new carb because of the needle jet wear. they come with the "air guide" wings now. do you know of anybody who used this style and did it affect what kind of idle jet or slide or needle the bike "liked" or do they seem to meter the same with the same jets?

    50 to 1 is too lean.. I wont run an engine that lean with oil especially with the heat those engines generate.. your looking for a seizure with that ratio..

    • @clarkrupp
      @clarkrupp  7 лет назад +3

      We're talking 100% synthetic 2 stroke racing oil here...... 20 years of KX500 ownership and racing. When complete engine tear downs are done the entire bottom end looks like someone just used a paint brush to cover every surface. Use high quality oils and follow the manufacturers recommendations.......... 50:1 under race conditions has never been a factor for me.
