    I have been driving truck 20 years and we call those boxes side boxes. Jockey box I believe are extra boxes that attach to the frame for the truck

    • @bigdaddeo76

      In the trucking industry, side box is the only name I've heard in 30+ years. Truck manufacturers call them luggage compartments. But I've heard several HDT owners in the rv industry call them jockey boxes. Not sure who started it.

    Two things.
    1) Tensioner pulleys if any, to be kept with the belts. I find the pulleys bearings going at close to the same time as the belts.
    2) Safety triangles are required by law for large trucks, in most jurisdictions that I know of.
    Cheers guys

    As a heavy duty tow truck driver every 3rd or fourth tow I do is a failure of a cooling system. Most of them is a hose blow out. My advise is to carry in truck at list 15 gallons of antifreeze , and set of all water lines and hoses and tights for them !!!
    For your reference if you hire mobile mechanich to deliver antifreeze for you , it will cost you $250 per hour plus each gallon of antifreeze will cost you at list $50+ (the one wich in Walmart is $10) !! Small repairs like replace water house you can do your self and save your self a lots of money by being fully staffed with parts and materials !!!

    Why do you carry a 12 volt compressor when you have a 18 cfm compressor under the hood of the Western Star? You should tap into one of your air tanks and run a line to a quick connect to the rear of the truck. I run a 1" impact gun off my rig for the rare occasions I need to change a tire.

    • @SuiteTravels
      @SuiteTravels  4 года назад +4

      Hi Tyler. We do have air connectors at the back of the truck...and we do carry an air hose, but the compressor doesn't kick-in until well below 100 PSI and our tires on the coach are 125 PSI, so you get into a "chase the air pressure" situation.

    Great Video, Were in Ontario Canada. I am planning on moving up simply due to safety concerns. On our first trip to the east coast.... I lost 6 tires before we reached Truro Nova Scotia. I got swapping out tires down to 20 minutes. I ended up in a Princess Auto stores parking lot. The store manager & assistant manager set me up with 4 new rims (not the cheap crap that was on the NEW trailer)and heavier tires so we could carry on our way. It was so hot out that they kept sending out staff to check on me and kept bringing us bottled water. Thank You Princess Auto. But wait it gets better, I say that as we lost our rear axle on our trailer while on the way home from Arizona in Texas a year later. The sticker said the axles were 5,000lb, NOT, they put 3500lb's under the trailer so we were overloading them. Thank you Golf Stream. So we left the trailer in Texas as trucked home like the Beverly hillbillies from TV fame. I returned to Texas 2 weeks later to get the trailer, out fitted with 4400lb's because the 5000lb axles would not fit. I took it to Gulf Streams factory, again nothing done. When I returned home and up graded the tires again to 10ply Goodyear's, with 2 extra's on the rear bumper. We also moved up to a 2500HD Ram as our tongue weight is 1100lb, just a bit heavy for a 1500 series in my mind. We spend about 5 months a year traveling now. But have major ideas for the future. I can't wait to retire and get some real traveling in. John

    I'm not trying to be a smarty pants. I use to drive over the road years ago. No more weight then you carry. You can lower air in your truck. I have run 90 psi in drive tires and 100 psi. You do what you comfortable doing. Love watching you vedio's. Good luck God bless you guys.

    Maybe I missed it Jim (and if so I apologize) but the No. 1 most important tool that should be carried for anyone who tows trailers of any kind, is a fire extinguisher. And while I believe it is the most important tool a driver can carry, I hope it is the least used.

    Need a spire steering tire for the Truck, you can not run a recap tire on the steering axle of the Truck you can run them on the drive axle, so having a steer tire can be used on the steer axle or the drive axle's, having a spire will also save you money in the long run, not having one you will end up paying the tire company's PRICE, also harbor freight sale's a air over hydraulic 20 Ton jack at you can run off your Truck and pick up both Truck and Trailer when hooked, Milwaukee make's a cordless 1'' impact that will take your lug nut off and on your Truck, just in case your in the middle of no where, thank's Jim

But also a few special things! Scissors, Medical Tape, Hydrogen Peroxide, Various "Anti" Creams an Savs! Anti-Biotic Sav, Anti-Itch (The Pink Stuff) cream, etc. If you have your animals on board, all their medicines, etc. Also, don't forget keep some Benadryl and or any other Anti-Allergy or Sinus Type Medicines! Get you an air hose that you can hook up to your airline that way you can air up your tires much faster than your compressor you should just use your compressor and emergency😁👍. You get them at the truck stop and the holes is at least 50 ft long they work great with compressor off your truck.

    Why did you decide to stay with two axles in the rear instead of a single

    • @SuiteTravels
      @SuiteTravels  2 года назад +1

      A couple of reasons Ronald....singling is rather expensive and we didn't think the cost vs benefit was worth it. Since we left it tandem we can make it a OTR truck again and sell it with low miles.

      I used to carry extra filters with me, but I don't service them myself so it didn't make any sense to carry them with us. If I had a "normal" truck I would definitely carry them with us.

    • @garypollard9770
      @garypollard9770 4 года назад

      Suite Travels I would definitely carry spare fuel filters for this truck. You have actually done very well about the things you are carrying for the coach and truck but I would carry spare fuel filter. It is not nearly as bad as it used to be about getting water or trash in fuel anymore especially if you are fueling at the major truck stops. Occasionally tho you might have to fuel at a small place or maybe get cheaper fuel then might get water! Or maybe even get moisture in tanks from normal use. Might even carry a bottle of fuel treatment or alcohol to add to fuel just in case.

    WHAT IS THE POWER RATING AND REAR END GEAR RATIO OF YOUR WESTERN STAR? HOW'S YOUR FUEL ECONOMY BEEN??? EVER CONSIDER SINGLE DRIVE AXLE SET UP????

    • @SuiteTravels
      @SuiteTravels  3 года назад

      505hp with .308 gears. We average 8.5mpg. We decided not to single for a couple of reasons: it's very expensive to delete an axle, re-program the truck's computer and build a new driveline. We also wanted to leave it tandem so if we ever wanted to sell as an OTR we could do that.

      Hi Harold. Thanks for the kind words. I believe the DEF started in 2008 (but I may be incorrect). Our 2007 Freightliner didn't require DEF. We don't carry DEF because we have a large enough DEF tank to get us quite a distance and we always fill it at the truck stops. Thanks for watching!
