Thanks for sharing the software update! I'm hoping this works to resolve my Inadequate Vacuum Error. I've had nothing but issues since purchasing the HR Freeze Dryer a couple years ago and have wasted a lot of money on bad batches. I just kind of gave up on the thing until watching your video today. If this doesn't work, then I'll be trying to hunt down a vacuum leak. Thanks again!
Same here. Nothing but issues for over a year. If you have their older pump, I can tell you it absolutely sucks. They warrantied my old pump twice before I finally told him to split the difference and I would buy a premier pump. Those old pumps are crap, and they know it. It's the reason they aren't selling them anymore. It literally took 9 months of constantly nagging them through email, and constantly calling them to get them to replace the two old pumps. Pumps. Three days after I got the premier pump, my 1-year warranty expired, and they refused to talk to me unless I started paying" diagnostics fees". This new firmware update causes my machine to go into a reboot loop until I turn it off and back on. I've tried multiple USB sticks, and downloaded the update a couple of times to make sure it's not corrupt. Unfortunately, harvest right is the only game in town, so you either put up with their terrible support and half working products, or you don't freeze dry.
And just clarify, I didn't have a vacuum leak either but got the error all the time. I went to a local machine shop that services Kubota tractors and had them make new vacuum line, and check the seals. The pump just didn't pull enough of a vacuum when the ambient temperature was above approximately 70°. If you can keep the pump under 70° using a box fan set on high, you will probably be able to get a vacuum unless the pump is too far gone. But I highly suspect the issue is your pump, and nothing else. See if you can negotiate to get a premier pump at half off before your warranty expires, otherwise they won't even talk to you.
@@darkpixel2k Thanks for the reply and recommendations. I have the Premier Pump. When I first bought the Freeze Dryer, I had the oilless pump. The bearings failed twice in it, and after the second failure I ordered the Premier Pump. I kept the oilless pump as a backup. I get the Inadequate Vacuum Error with both the Premier Pump and the Oilless Pump. I had to ship the Freeze Dryer and Pump back to HR because it was only freezing the back half of the chamber. They fixed it and shipped it back. The FD and Pump fell off the pallet in the back of the FedEx truck, so I refused delivery as advised by HR. HR checked out the FD and sent it back in the oil soaked box. The oil drained out of the pump and leaked all over the place because HR didn't drain the pump before returning it to me. My whole experience with HR has been a nightmare. I've kept a fan on my pump, but it's not close to 70 degrees. I'm in the Phoenix, AZ area, and it's triple digits outside, and about 76 degrees inside. I'm going to try chasing down vacuum leaks.
@@HighlanderMikeGolf Jesus...sounds like you've had a similar but worse experience. I had a pump fail followed by the cables that went to heat the trays, then a second pump started having issues and during the 6 months of them constantly asking me for "logs" and then doing nothing with them I had the LCD screen/computer fail and had to replace that. Then they finally replaced the pump a few days before the warranty expired.
I guess it's possible the premier pump could be suffering from similar issues. I mean, there's only a few places where a vacuum leak can occur. Obviously the connectors between the pump and the chassis...but maybe a bad weld at the connector or a bad gasket? I hope it's not something internal to the pump, otherwise you're going to have to go through hell and back to get them to replace the pump.
@@darkpixel2k Yep. I had the relay board go out as well. The trays weren't heating up during the final cycle. We wasted alot of money and food on bad batches. If I find out what the leak is, I'll let you know. It tikked me off when I sent the brand new pump back to them with the FD. I drained it before shipping it back to them. They tested it out and left the oil in it when they shipped it back and it fell off the pallet in back of the truck. Customer service has closed out several tickets before resolving issues. They also didn't secure the drain hose when they shipped it back and the metal connector was partially collapsed. I got a new drain hose and am going to put that on. I'm thinking it might be leaking there, or there was too much stress on that drain hose and it got pulled and created a leak where it enters the chamber. They also sent me the drain hose that has a female connector (where it connects to the bottom of the chamber). The old one had a male connector, plus an adapter. At least by removing the adapter, I can get rid of one more possible leaking point. I'll keep you posted. I wish this freeze dryer worked as advertised! It's a love-hate relationship, and I'm more at the hate point right now. I wonder if they have a therapy group for us? 🤣

@@tennray They blow up to the size of golf balls. The new candy mode rocks. 2 hours of dry time and everything was done.
I haven't done candy yet but it's not on this week's schedule. I have so many things yet to freeze dry. Purchasing a second set of trays has helped speed up the process. Milk is currently in the machine with two chickens we brined & cooked on the rotisserie froze and up next. TY for great ideas.

We have the new update When we set ours into candy/ high temperature mode and press save, the screen doesn’t change to indicate that it is in that mode. The name of the freeze dryer doesn’t go away and we don’t get any indication that it is in candy mode on the front screen. No warm tray toggle switch, it just does it’s usual thing. Processing through the normal steps

A lot of people in forums are missing the step that the 4 files contained within the zip file downloaded from HR need to be put in the root directory of the USB thumb drive. Some are just copying the zip file over without extracting it and others are putting it in a folder on the USB drive.

If you format your drive and then access it with your computer, there is nothing there. That's the root directory that only the firmware files from within the zip archive should be copied into. If you add a folder to the root directory and then go inside that folder, you are no longer in the root directory but are in a subdirectory (subfolder). It's just the main part of the drive itself as long as your not in any sort of folder/subdirectory. When you first access any drive (just clicking on a disk icon), you are looking at the root directory before you enter any folders. I hope that makes a bit of sense.

So I opened the folder that I had downloaded into my computer and then I moved the 3 files into the flash drive. THAT WORKED!! I was excited, but than I am 69 years old. LOL

I installed the new version as soon as I got the link to it. Install was easy. Ran the candy mode for several days and it worked great. BUT when I went to run a load not in candy mode, the machine went into the freeze mode and never switched over to freezedry. It ran all night and never switched over , 12hours. The Temp was at -10F and in the CSV files it showed that the temp got down to -20F, so getting to temp wasn't the problem. Ran a couple more loads of candy and then the machine refused to run anything more. I am working with Harvest Right tech support now to try to resolve the issue. My version was v5.1.15 so the update should have worked. The Tech sent me 3 files that he said was a patch to try to fix it, but they did not work. Actually I think they were just the files that were the update. Maybe he thought I hadn't done something right. Here is a link to a video I made for the Tech at Harvest Right. We ran a batch of candy a year ago for the grandkids, and they weren't very impressed. I don't anticipate doing candy again. We're focused on fruits, veggies, eggs, cheese, meats, and meals. Is the software upgrade beneficial for any other reason? Running V 5.1.15 currently. No bugs that we know of; the only issue was a crappy door alignment which we figured out ourselves (HarvestRight customer service was abysmal). Thank you for explaining how updates are done!

After just a week of learning about freeze drying and these harvest right machines, I’m dying to order the large.
What scares me is when i read reviews of these units. For instance on Home Depot. The problems and quality control seems shaky.
And then the horror stories about customer service.
I wish you would honestly address not just the good things about the machines.

This would prove to your viewers that you’re not being unduly influenced by freebies they are giving you. Or being biased due to your side business of selling accessories.
Their quality control is terrible, and their support is even worse. If you buy one, it appears to be a gamble on if you get a working unit, or if you slowly run out your warranty trying to get them to fix stuff, while constantly having to nag and email to try to get responses out of them.

@@Bill-xs4zu Well...let's be fair. I know a handful of people who have freeze dryers. Some of them have had no issues for years. It looks to me like it's a 50/50. Maybe Retired at 40 managed to get a good batch of machines and hasn't run into any issues. Then again, maybe Harvest Right is making sure he gets taken care of because he shows their products in a positive light. In my personal experience Retired at 40 has been great when I've contacted him about product issues and ideas--including offering replacements or credits when (in my opinion) it totally wasn't necessary. But Harvest Right is another matter. I can demonstrate multiple times where they just "ghost me" via email, techs being incompetent, managers getting angry with me when I contact them about techs ghosting me, and even "Dan" getting annoyed when I complained about the repeated pump failures and called them out for knowing it because they no longer sell them with new freeze dryers...right up until I suggested that I buy a premier pump minus the cost of the existing failed "standard" pumps. Meh. Maybe someone else will start a freeze dryer company and leave them in the dust. Hell--the computer control isn't difficult for me, and lots of people make vacuum pumps. I just need someone who can manufacture a vacuum chamber and heating trays.

He literally talks about issues he has and problems and cons of the system in his videos... I think he just has a good experience with them. Just because he is a RUclipsr doesn't mean he is not being truthful. And in his FB group, there are plenty of negative comments and posts that talks about issues and problems and usually the advice is call and they get it fixed. I mean I don't have mine yet, but I just don't see what your saying happening..
Interesting. I got mine just over a month ago and my version is 5.2.16. I've noticed that my processing times are markedly faster than what you've reported in videos from a couple years ago.

Another candy question, I just put my first batch in and my time aside 12 hours, I just got the dryer a week ago so it is new. Do I just check the candy at 2 hrs? How do you store your candy does it need the oxygen packets and bags, like the food products?

I’m new to freeze drying and purchased the pharmaceutical freeze dryer BY MISTAKE because I only want to use it for candy making and apparently I need the home model. Should I attempt to exchange it or do you know if I can purchase the home insert and just use the pharmaceutical model for candy making? I’m so defeated that I didn’t even realize there was a home and a pharma model before spending $3500!! Your videos are great by the way because it helped me set up mine last week and then discovered the pharma issue.
I do not have experience with the pharma model. You may be able to change the software so it can be used for candy. You could post on our Facebook group and see if there is someone else that has changed theirs. Retired at 40s freeze drying group.

I got the "Inadequate Vacuum" error after using mine less than 5 times. See my response above to @HighlanderMikeGolf on my solution. Worked like a charm and it cut my drying time by approximately 10 hours - by replacing a part for less than $10. Hope this helps.

I'm confused. You said in your video that v3.6.11 cannot upgrade but this is copy and pasted from the harvest right website "If you have 3.6.11 or a version higher you will be able to install the new software on your freeze dryer". Am i missing something?
I finished a two how batch and my candy expanded but it is still squishy. Is this normal? Does it just need more dry time?
Do you sell anything that keeps the door from hitting the machine while im loading food. I try not to bump it but sometimes the XL trays are really heavy and awkward for me

What is the point of cooling the chamber if the trays are then heated right away? Seems counter intuitive?
I never freeze dried anything so I’m wondering after you freeze dry candy with all other products you have to soak them in water. Do you have to soak candy in water before you eat it after you freeze dry it?
No you can eat them like that. The texture is light and airy. I do ice cream sandwiches and they are my favorite. Salt water taffy does really good too.

@@somanynames1 yes sir if you use the Mylar bags and oxygen absorption packets. We use freezer bags or mason jars because ours never lasts😉

It seems like it didnt freeze dry completely in the standard 2 hours. Im not sure what the texture is supposed to be but I expected it to be airy/crunchy all the way through and that was not the case. The gummies were half airy/ half gummie, the starbursts turned super hard,
I am sick! I bought a freeze dryer but bought the pharma model and can't take it back. I bought it because of the number of shelves. Can I still make candy and food in it? The settings are obviously different. Help!
I find most candy to be VERY inconsistent. Gummies almost never work for me, and it makes me mad. I only have luck with skittles, airheads, and starburst.
P.S. skittles can be laid on thick, no need for dividers. I usually fit the biggest bag they sell in stores on 2 trays, you might get some clumps but they are easily broken apart.
My neighbor uses only organic gummies and it works every time.

When you do Candy or really anything. How do you know how much extra dry time should you add. Basically I’m worried about something finishing when I’m asleep or not home. What do I do? Thank you!
Add 24 hours of dry time, that way the fd stays on even after its done
I installed the update and ran a mixed load of green beans, cooked potatoes, onions, and carrots. I prefroze it but the potatoes were not quite solid. It ran like normal until it got to about 750 Torr and the vac pump shut off. I canceled the batch and started over then it ran fine after that. could it be that since the potatoes were not completely frozen that it did that?
If my Starbursts didn't puff up and are a bit chewy can i run them again?

Ludmil Iliev - You could ask the manufacturer of the pump. If I remember correctly when talking with them, it's a pretty powerful one (the green one) built for big a/c's.
Can you film the candy being made in the smallest machine with three slots? Or does that machine require the black cover thing? Thanks
All sizes of machines work the same. If you have this software, the screens will be the same. A pillow is not required and only provides insulation.
Is there any way to skip 15min "Cooling Vacuum Chamber" in this new update?

I see people turn off the initial freeze mode so I’m trying that now bc when I have left it on my candy did not puff up and it would before very chewy after too seconds
I am new to freeze drying candy, i just received my new Large Harvest Right machine and did my fist batch of candy, it did not go well, the Skittles barley broke open and the Nerd clusters and strawberry foam bottom gummies also looked about the same as when i started, i had already installed the new update (i had just got the machine and the email within days of each other that i had to update it) and i did 145 temp candy mode and added two hours drying time at the end and it STILL didn't freeze? The strawberry foam bottom gummies were a little frozen and chewy in the middle and the skittles had a small white ring in the middle. I was looking to see if the premium oil pump kicks on by itself during one stage of the process because as soon as i click the on switch mine starts and runs the entire time? Is this correct or is it supposed to start/run during a certain process? I saw a video that said the oil pump kicked on after 45 minutes but mine stays on the entire process? Is that right?

Should freeze dried candies be stored in a mylar bag with an oxygen absorber, or, due to the low moisture content that candy has, will it be ok just in a zip lock bag?
I have candy that has been in an unsealed jar for years. There is so much sugar, chems and additives, it will probably outlast me😂

so the last time I did a software update it screwed up my machine and was never the same even after I redid it a BUNCH of times....it makes me VERY nervous to do this update....
Tried doing this update from the Harvest Right email, but clicked the link and it just opens my . PDF reader and says it can't load. I'm going to try your Link and hopefully it'll work since HR hasn't gotten back to me yet.
I could not unzip the emailed files so called Harvest Right. They sent unzipped files. I was told to use a thumb drive less than 16 gigabytes as bigger thumb drives are hard for the machine to handle. I loaded the software with no problem then.
So I have version 5.1.16, but keep getting told by HR that I need the upgrades. None of them loaded to the machine, even though the harvest files loaded onto the small drive. All of this software updates are confusing since all I want is the freaking candy mode. I am assuming that the version in this video was done way before I got my machine with the 5.1.16 version?
This video is not that old. I just purchased a new machine a little over a month ago and it had an older software installed. Unless your machine was shipped within the last month or so, it would have newer software on it

Just ran my first batch of candy with the new software. The gummy bears did not expand as I see on other videos. 5 minute tray warm, 150 degree candy setting. albanese gummy bears. What did I do wrong? Is it because they were on the bottom rack? I noticed you only did 2 trays of candies. Is 4 trays too much?
4 trays will do just fine. It may be your brand or your time.
Do they come automatically updated so if I ordered one now it would already have this update?
I just bought mine 2 weeks ago and it is version 5.1.16 - there is no candy mode! Not sure why it wouldn't have it? Do we need to down grade to the 5.0.19 for the candy mode? This doesn't make sense to me.

@@Bill-xs4zu depending on your software version, it's on page 12 of the owners manual (link below). Please stop saying he is getting special treatment. Anyone can put their name on it. It's literally his job to know how to use, so he no doubt knows the system in and out. He just tinkers with it more. Has nothing to do with special treatment. Not every RUclipsr is out to trick you.

When I set up my machine in February I had the option of naming it. You may be able to go back in the settings and do so...?
You can go in and custom name your machine to whatever you want. No special treatment there
Do you think you could dry your fresh herbs with this setting?
I think it would be too hot. Certain herbs lose their medicinal properties if dried at too high of a heat setting.
On your machine, when it's at the warm trays cycle at the start, when you press start the timer is counting down. On mine I press start and it asks if I want to add time but the timer isn't counting down. There's only cancel option. Not sure why the difference in process. Can someone help?

I have never upgraded because mine has always worked perfectly & seeing all the bugs people haven had has kept me with my original version. If I upgrade now & have issues can I go back to the 5.0.10?
You can, but its a bit more involved of a process
Why does the chamber cool off for 15 minutes and then heat up the trays?
The trays warming softens up the candy meanwhile the chamber is still cold.
Are blueberries similar in nature to candy? I tried BB and they came out “undone”... some were still almost raw. The BB were prefrozen. Any ideas are welcome! All my other fruits and vegies worked out great.
I use a meat tenderizer to pierce the blueberries before drying. This removed the issue of partial dried blueberries for me.
All foods need a place for water to escape. If they are not cut or pierced, they will either not work or take a very long time.

mine is brand new too- i suppose i'll check if it offers the candy mode when i change the temperature like he said!
If I wanted to manually put in the setting for candy, what would I set my temp at? I dint really have the ability to update currently and I made a batch at the standard 120° and added 12 hours and it did not work at all.

newest is 5.2.19, or 5.1.19, or 5.0.19 depending on your machine. The important part is the last part, the .19

The middle number is the style of touch screen you have. That is why there are three different files. It will work with your 5.2
